James Greer
Mr. James “Stuff, Dancingman” Greer, 68, of Arbor Grove Baptist Church Road, Roaring River, died Monday, May 14, 2007 at Roaring River.
He was born Sept. 7, 1938 in Ashe County, to James M. and Flora Tucker Greer.
Mr. Greer worked for 43 years at Tyson Service Center, both in Roaring River and Wilkesboro.
Survivors include four daughters, Joanie Lee Greer of the home, Lisa Jean Sheets Byrd of Roaring River, Tina Marie Anderson of Sawmills, N.C., and Norma Jean Lunsford of Moravian Falls; one son, David James Sheets of Roaring River; three sisters, Freda Sanders of Lenoir, Floy Gentle of Kannapolis, and Reba Wilcox of Wilkesboro; one brother, Hershel Greer of Millers Creek; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, May 18, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Richard Blevins officiating. Burial followed in Gap Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Ashe County.

Kathleen Ward Main
Mrs. Kathleen Ward Main, 79, of Lenoir, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at Caldwell County Hospice and Palliative Care.
She was born July 2, 1927 in Watauga County, to the late William Ward and Maude Tester Ward.
Mrs. Main was a member of Flemings Chapel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sons, Johnny Main and wife, Pam, of Lenoir, and Bill Main and wife, Faye, also of Lenoir; two daughters, Jeanette Main and husband, Gary, of Lenoir and Joan Snyder and husband, Jack, also of Lenoir; three brothers, Cecil Ward and wife, Peggy, of Hudson, Wiley Ward of South Carolina, and Charles Lee Ward and wife, Betty, of Tennessee; three sisters, Elenore Gragg and husband, Vernon, of Lenoir, Lucille Watson and husband, R.J., of Virginia, and Mary Willis Main and husband, Hurley, of Lenoir; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years, Boyd Edgar Main; three brothers; and two sisters.
Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, May 20, 2007, at 2 p.m., at Flemings Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Hugh Whitfield, the Rev. Lester Honson and the Rev. Steve Butler officiating. Mrs. Main will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the services. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday, May 19, 2007 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Pendry’s Funeral Home.

Paul Lamont Gabriel Jr.
Mr. Paul Lamont Gabriel, Jr., 83, of 4717F Edwards Mill Road in Raleigh, and formerly of Lincolnton, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
He was born Dec. 6, 1923 in Lincoln County to the late Paul Lamont and Lettie Goodson Gabriel.
Mr. Gabriel was a graduate of Lincolnton High School and the Citadel and a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II.
He was a retired supervisor from Prudential Insurance Company.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Summey Gabriel; one sister, Betty Ross of Lincolnton; two brothers, Steve Gabriel of Asheville, and S.G. “Shirley” Gabriel of Rutherfordton; and one grandson, John Paul Gabriel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Paul “Bud” Gabriel, III and Michael Reid Gabriel; and two brothers, General Charles A. Gabriel and J.B. Gabriel.
A graveside service was held Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at Hollybrook Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Ervin officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Raleigh.

Chuck Judson Cooke
Mr. Chuck Judson Cooke, 78, of 12020 McManus Road, Midland, N.C., died May 10, 2007, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
He served his country faithfully and honorably. He retired August 1969 as MSG Cooke, Co. A, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, Ft. Bragg, N.C. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. After retirement from the military, Mr. Cooke was employed at the U.S. Post Office in Fayetteville, N.C. He currently attended Locust Presbyterian Church and worked many years with the Lions Club of Midland.
Survivors include his children, Judson Mack Cooke of Supply, N.C., Anita Jane “Deddie” Cooke and husband, Paul Marshall, of Raleigh, and Cynthia Lee Cooke Long, RN and husband, David Long, of Mission, Texas; seven grandchildren, Brandy Cooke, Tiffany Cooke, Courtney Long, Aaron Marshall, Benjamin Cooke, Jeffrey Long and Alexandra Marshall; two great-grandchildren, Jazmine and Brenton Meeks; two brothers, Rev. Joel Duane Cook and wife, Neil, of Hickory, N.C., and James Edward Cook and wife, Kathy, of Boone; two sisters, Louise Cook Howard and husband, Jerald, of Hickory, and Della Cook Smith and husband, J.D. Smith of Boone; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Cooke Lavoie and husband, Leo, of Tyner, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen Joyner Cooke; his father, Hade Cook of Boone; his mother, Blake McManus Cooke of Midland, N.C.; and a brother, Rev. George Hartsell Cooke of Tyner, N.C.
Mr. Cooke was a loving and dedicated son, father, grandfather, brother and frield to all who were fortunate to have known him.
The family will receive friends between 1:45 and 3:45 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2007, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home at 500 Ramsey Street in Fayetteville, N.C. Services will be conducted at 4:00 in the Rogers and Breece Funeral Home Chapel with burial following with full military honors at LaFayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville, N.C.

Grace Stacy Dougherty
Mrs. Grace Stacy Dougherty, 92, of Sedgewood Drive, Rock Hill, S.C., and a resident of Boone for 64 years, died Saturday evening, May 12, 2007 at the Agape Senior Center in Rock Hill.
She was born Oct. 14, 1914 in Clover, S.C., a daughter of Starr Neely Stacy, Sr. and Martha “Mattie” Salena Ormand.
Mrs. Dougherty was a graduate of Kings Business College in Charlotte before being employed at Rock Hill Printing and Finishing and Appalachian State Teachers College. She was a homemaker. In l934, she married Dr. Robert O’Neal Boyd who died in 1938, then married David Barnard Dougherty in 1941. Mr. Dougherty died in 1965. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Boone for 60 years.
Survivors include two sons, David Daniel Dougherty and wife, Dale, of Greensboro and Bartlett Barnard Dougherty and wife, Dianne, of Cary and Boone; one daughter, Jane Dougherty Wilson and husband, Lewis Garrard, of Rock Hill, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Sara Dougherty of New York City, N.Y., Stacy Weaver of Chicago, Ill., Autumn Grace Dougherty of New York City, N.Y., Daniel Garrard Wilson of Rock Hill, S.C., Paul Dougherty Wilson of La Grange, Ga., Anna Bartlett Wilson of Rock Hill, S.C. and Mary Taylor Land-Wilkins of Garner; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Stacy Williamson of Spartanburg, S.C. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis Ormand Stacy, Sr., Starr Neely Stacy, Jr. and John Eugene Stacy; and one sister, Lida Stacy Robinson.
Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at the Dougherty Chapel of the First Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Wayne Brown. The family will receive friends at the church following services. A private family graveside service and burial will be at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Jean Ann Maskil Dugger
Mrs. Jean Ann Maskil Dugger, 62, of 361 Jonas Ridge Highway, Newland, the Pineola community, died Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2007 at her home.
She was born Jan. 27, 1945 in Lancaster, Ohio, the daughter of Edna Sheets Maskil McCarty and the late George Maskil. 
Mrs. Dugger currently was employed in the produce department at Lowe’s Foods in Banner Elk, and was formerly employed by Food Lion in Banner Elk and Ingles Food Store in Newland.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Lee Dugger of the home and was preceded in death by a son, Paul Wilson Dugger; a granddaughter, Teresa Kay Dugger; and her mother-in-law, Hazel May Sparks Dugger.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Michelle Demko and husband, Carl, and Carol Gundy and husband, Wendell, all of Columbus, Ohio; Angela Greer and husband, Michael, of Pineola; and Polly Maltba of Marion; one son, Avery Dugger of Crossnore; ten grandchildren, Kristy Dugger, Jennifer Gundy, Amanda Bolin, Levi Maltba, Justine Gundy, Larry Maltba, Paulina Bolin, Jordan Gundy, Deziree Maltba and Austin Dugger; and one great-grandchild, Haley Dugger; her mother, Edna McCarty of Columbus, Ohio; and two sisters, Connie Robinholt of Circleville, Ohio and Carmen McCarty of Columbus, Ohio.
Local funeral services were conducted Friday evening, May 11, at 8 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Russell Holman and the Rev. Brent Price. The family received friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock, at Austin & Barnes. The family received friends Sunday afternoon, May 13, from 2 until 4 o’clock and Sunday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at the Newcomer Funeral Home in Grove City, Ohio. A funeral service was conducted Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the Newcomer Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Glen Rest Memorial Estates in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Linda Joyce Hicks
Miss Linda Joyce Hicks, 58, of 153 Pritchards Farm Road, Vilas, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 4, 1948 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late John Albert and Mary Ruth Warren Hicks. She was a Pharmacy Technician for Deerfield Pharmacy in Boone and a member of Willow Dale Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Janice Hicks and Gail Hicks, both of Vilas. She is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many special friends.
Graveside services and burial were conducted Saturday morning, May 12, 2007, at St. John Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Eugene Braswell.

Annie Ruth Payne Hollar
Mrs. Ruth Payne Hollar, 86, of Kernersville, N.C., died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was born in Watauga County, on August 10, 1920.
Mrs. Hollar was a beloved wife, mother and sister. She was a member of Three Forks Baptist Church in Boone.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Fred E. Hollar; a son, Jerry Hollar and wife, Joan, of Colfax; two daughters, Sharon Yokeley of Winston-Salen and Phyllis Nelson and husband, Jim, and a son-in-law, Gerald Fletcher, all of Pfafftown; grandchildren, Jerry M. Hollar, Alan Fletcher, Dawn Webster, Jill Fletcher, Josh Nelson, Chris Yokeley and Robin Wolfe; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Grace Ray of Deep Gay and Mary Farmer of Lenoir; three brothers, Claude Payne, Jr., Dan Payne and wife, Joan, and Paul Payne, all of Boone.
In addition to her parents, her daughter and granddaughter, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Imogene Williams, Dorothy Hollar, Claudine Clawson and Shirley Rimstead; and two brothers, Luther Payne and Lawrence Payne.
Graveside services and burial were conducted Monday morning, May 14, at 11:00 o’clock at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. Officiating was the Rev. Gordon Noble.

Gertha Virginia Stewart Moretz
Mrs. Gertha Virginia Stewart Moretz, 87, of Moretz Hollow Road, Zionville, died Friday morning, May 11, 2007 at home.
She was born March 17, 1920 in Sullivan County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Isom and Maggie Reece Stewart.
Mrs. Moretz was a member of Mabel Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Jim Moretz and wife, Becky, and Roy Moretz and wife, Jill, all of Zionville; three daughters, Nancy Silva and husband, Jack, of Banner Elk, Martha Deal of Zionville, and Karen Boyd of Claremont; seven grandchildren, James Moretz, and wife, Allison, Heather Gentry and husband, Vance, Lisa Church, Zeb and Maggie Deal, Sarah Boyd and Allison Collins and husband, Jeff; seven great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Justin, Josie, and Julie Moretz, Connie Gentry, Hailey Collins and Jalen Williams; two sisters, Frances Melvin and husband, Jr., and Alice “Polly” Sandoe, all of Bristol, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Clint Thomas Moretz; one son, Keith Moretz; three sisters; and four brothers.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Mabel Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Carl Johnson. Burial followed in the Mabel Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to High Country Health Care System Hospice, 400 Shadowline Drive, Suite 100-B, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Willie H. Phillips
Mr. Willie H. Phillips, 94, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care.
He was born Feb. 22, 1913 in Watauga County, a son of the late Will Filmore and Ettie Wilcox Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was a retired sawmill operator and timber cutter.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary McGuire of Lexington, Christine Lewis, and Martha Hawley, both of Deep Gap, and Linda Mast and husband, Doug, of the Beech Creek community; two sons, John Phillips and wife, Margie, of Boone, and Silas Phillips and wife, Sandra, of Lexington. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Carlton Phillips; and two brothers, Hoy and Bruce Phillips.
Services were conducted Saturday morning, May 12, 2007, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hardin Road Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Johnny Phillips, Jr. Burial followed in Hardin Road Baptist Church Cemetery.

James Ragsdale Sr.
Mr. James David Ragsdale Sr., 75, of Willow Street, SW, Lenoir, died Friday, May 11, 2007 at the residence.
He was born June 30, 1931 in Caldwell County to the late James Moses and Wilta Carlton Ragsdale.
Mr. Ragsdale was retired from Fairfield Chair Furniture Company.
Survivors include a son, James David Ragsdale Jr. and wife, Deborah, of Raleigh; three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Ann Craig and husband, John, of Lenoir, Mrs. Patricia Diane Davis and husband, Charles, of Idaho, and Mrs. Lisa Elaine Wydra and husband, Eric, of Fayetteville; four sisters, Mrs. Betty Triplett and Mrs. Marion Poarch, both of Hudson, Mrs. Shirley Roots and Mrs. Tana Moretz, both of Lenoir; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Ann Ragsdale.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Kings Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jim Stout
Mr. Jim Stout, 71, of Banner Elk, and a former resident of Abingdon, Va., died Wednesday afternoon May 9, 2007 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born in Johnson County, Tenn., a son of the late Raymond E. and Nell Davis Stout.
Mr. Stout was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served two years in the Signal Corps. He was retired from Sprint Telephone Company after 35 years of service and was also a farmer. Jim will be remembered as one who loved his family, friends, community and most of all loved life.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 46 years, Joyce C. Stout; one son, Jim Stout, II of Boone; one sister, Sue Baird of Mountain City, Tenn.; and one brother, Joe Stout and wife, Mary, of Euharlee, Ga.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kenny Stout.
Graveside services and burial were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, Va. with Linda Taylor officiating.

Mabel Ruth Norris Styers
Mrs. Mabel Ruth Norris Styers, 88, of 641 Peachtree Rd., Reidsville, N.C., died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.
A native of Boone, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Don Stokes and the late Ella Norris, and had lived most of her life in Orlanda, Fla.
Mrs. Styers was a retired school teacher, having taught in Orange County, Fla., for 37 years.
Survivors include her husband, Maurice Styers; a son, Mike Styers of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Shirley Black and husband, Tony, of Troutman, N.C.; a granddaughter, Leigh Anne Crider and husband, Phillip, of Statesville, N.C; and two great-grandchildren, Elijah Benjamin Crider and Andrew Phillip Crider.
There will be no formal funeral service.
