MT. HOLLY — When a soccer team spends as much time in an opponents’ side of the field as Watauga’s girls’ team did at East Gaston, goals are eventually going to be scored.

Watauga to host regional
Any Watauga track and field athlete who wants to reach the state meet will enjoy home field advantage. The Pioneers host the Western 4-A Regional Championships Saturday at Jack Groce Stadium beginning at 9 a.m. Watauga will have about 20 athletes looking to extend their seasons to May 19, when the state finals are run in Greensboro. Moore tosses one-hitter at Freedom

Watauga settles for split in soccer
After a win on Thursday and loss on Friday, Watauga’s girls’ soccer team settled for a third-place finish in the Northwestern 4-A Conference standings. In a rainstorm, Watauga was able to shut out South Caldwell 4-0 Thursday at Jack Groce Stadium. However, that game was followed by a disappointing 2-1 loss to McDowell at Kidd Brewer Stadium Friday night. Read more.

CULLOWHEE — Appalachian State baseball coach Chris Pollard knew that facing Western Carolina’s bullpen, with the exception of the Catamounts’ two outstanding closers, would be easier than facing their starting pitching staff. Read more.
