Pioneers cruise to victory over Green Central
KINSTON — For the Watauga Pioneer baseball team, the final two games of the George Whitfield Invitational were statement games. After beating the sixth ranked team in the Impact Baseball 3A poll, South Central, on Monday, Watauga (7-10) banged out 10 hits to defeat the Greene Central Rams 7-1 Tuesday. Read more.

App St. sweeps Elon
Appalachian State continued to pound out hits as the Mountaineers completed a three-game sweep of Elon Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 victory. Read more.

Students sack ETSU football
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — East Tennessee State University officials announced Wednesday that students have voted down a ballot referendum regarding an increase in student athletic fees that would have helped pay for a new football program. Read more.

Mountaineers to host meet
Appalachian State’s men’s and women’s track and field programs will compete in the last regular-season meet of the year as they return home to host the Appalachian Spring Open Friday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Events begin at noon. Read more.

Appalachian Canaveral
The new ASU Softball Stadium is quickly earning a reputation as a hitter’s park.
Appalachian State used a home run by Diana Cook to beat Elon 5-4 and complete a doubleheader sweep of the Phoenix Monday afternoon. The Mountaineers opened an eight run lead in the first game and held on to claim a 14-9 win. To read more, click here.

Pioneers rebound with victory
KINSTON — Just when Watauga needed a big performance, pitcher Tyler Moore provided one. Moore held South Central, ranked sixth in the 3-A Impact Baseball poll, to just three hits and helped the Pioneers claim a 3-0 victory in the George Whitfield Invitational Tournament Monday morning. Read more.

ETSU votes on football
Tuesday and Wednesday have the potential to be the biggest days in East Tennessee State football history. They also have the potential to be a big disaster. Read more.

ASU moves into new home
Finally, after 33 games, Appalachian State will truly host a home game. The new Smith Stadium, located behind the Broyhill Inn, is not completely finished. But the field itself is ready for the Mountaineers to host Gardner-Webb Tuesday at 3 p.m. Appalachian State then hosts The Citadel in a three-game series beginning Friday and going through Sunday. Commentary: Mountaineers still a work in progress
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Appalachian State victories over the College of Charleston have been few and far between over the last few years. In fact, the Mountaineers, including their three-game series with the Cougars this weekend, are 4-23 against The College. One of those losses was an embarrassing 20-0 shellacking back in 2004 and the Cougars have scored at least 20 runs on ASU one other time and 19 runs two more times during that stretch. Read more.

WST takes fifth, seventh in meet
HUNERSVILLE — The Watauga Swim Team competed in its short course championship meet March 23-25.Thirty-seven swimmers attended the meet, with 25 swimmers scoring points for the team. Read more.


Patriots hold off Watauga in 8th
Watauga’s baseball team has not been known as a power hitting offense this year.

CLEMSON, S.C. — Led by four individual first-place finishes, Appalachian State’s men’s track and field team took second at the Clemson Outdoor Standard Track Meet at Rock Norman Track Saturday.

KINSTON — Garrett Davis struck out 15 and only allowed one Watauga hit in C.B. Aycock’s 10-0 win over the Pioneers Saturday at historic Grainger Stadium. Read more.

Watauga falls 10-3 in cold weather game
Every crack of the bat was accompanied by a sharp sting to the hands in a blistering cold softball game Thursday, when Watauga hosted Freedom at the Carroll Complex. Read more.

Watauga boys’ tennis coach Lyle Stephens told his players that McDowell’s retooled team may lack experience, but still deserved the Pioneers’ respect. Read more.
