Ammann commits to pitch at Mars Hill
Mars Hill’s baseball program is going to have to wait until next week for its latest recruit to sign a letter of intent. Yet Watauga pitcher Lee Ammann said he won’t back out of the verbal commitment he made Sunday night to the Lions. Ammann will be in Kinston this weekend with the Pioneers in a baseball tournament, but will return Tuesday to sign his letter. Read more.

SAWMILLS — Facing one of the top teams in the nation, Watauga coach Pete Hardee just wanted his Pioneers to be competitive. His young pitcher, Tyler Moore, made that happen for five innings.

Watauga dumps South
SAWMILLS — Watauga got two goals from Macy Johnson and Sarah Caldwell pitched her second shutout in goal in as many games to lead the visiting Pioneers to a 4-0 victory over the Spartans Tuesday.

Pioneers outlast Spartans
SAWMILLS — Watauga’s softball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning and beat host South Caldwell 9-5 Tuesday. The Pioneers (7-5, 3-4 Northwestern 4-A Conference) gladly accepted two errors by the Spartans (4-8, 1-6) in the ninth inning to capture the victory. After a Beth Wilson single, Hannah Yates reached base on an error. Read more.

Appalachian State University athletics mourns the loss of former director of athletics Jim Garner, who died Monday at age 63 in his current hometown of Tucson, Ariz. Read more.
ASU topples UNCA
ASHEVILLE — Isaac Harrow’s three-run double highlighted a five-run fifth inning as Appalachian State extended its longest winning streak in 11 years to eight games with an 8-7 victory over UNC Asheville Wednesday at McCormick Field. Read more.

Under-14s hold on for win

Pioneers settle for 0-0 tie with Titans
The Northwestern 4-A Conference is running out of doormats. McDowell, once a team that, with a little effort could be beaten fairly easily, seems to have shed that image. Watauga found out Monday night when it settled for a 0-0 tie with the Titans. Read more.
Storm under-13s win tournament
DOBSON — The Watauga Storm boy’s under-13 basketball team completed its 2007 season by winning the Copeland Invitational. The Storm started the tournament with a 57-48 loss to Galax (Va.) Twin Co. The Storm was led by Alex (A.B.) Fox who tallied 14 points and eight rebounds. Ethan Poulos followed with 10 points, while Jake Pifer and Ethan Greene each added nine points. Read more.
S.C. ace to face WHS
They are the No. 1-ranked team in North Carolina 4-A baseball. That must seem like small potatoes to the South Caldwell Spartans. Most teams would be thrilled to be No. 1 in their state. Yet the Spartans can take that one step further — being No. 1 in the nation. Read more.

Ammann allows just one hit to Knights
It appears that North Davidson has never seen a curveball like the one Watauga ace Lee Ammann can throw. It took the Knights until the seventh inning to finally get a hit off Ammann, which worked out well for the Pioneers in their 1-0 victory Saturday at Watauga’s field. Ammann fanned nine Knights, walked three and benefitted from a double play in the sixth inning. Read more.
ASU sweeps Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Before last weekend, Appalachian State had gone 52-straight Southern Conference series without claiming a three-game sweep. With a 4-3 victory at Furman Sunday, the Mountaineers have now accomplished the feat two weekends in a row. Read more.
Watauga falls to ‘Hawks
For a half, Watauga’s girls’ soccer team outplayed North Buncombe, but had no goals to show for it. In the second half, North Buncombe outplayed the Pioneers and claimed a 2-1 victory when it was over.

Pioneers roll past Eagles
In two innings, Watauga’s bats came alive in a 9-0 victory over Wilkes Central Friday at the Carroll Complex. In fact, the eight runs — four in the first and four more in the second — were enough to allow coach Brian Vannoy to pull his starters by the fourth inning. Read more.
Cougars power past ASU
During its baseball years, Red Lackey Field was known as a hitter’s park. Now that it’s been converted to ASU’s Softball Stadium, that reputation hasn’t changed. College of Charleston blasted 13 home runs over the course of three games out of the new field and swept the Mountaineers Saturday and Sunday. Read more.

MORGANTON — Watauga’s golf team finished fourth in a match played last Monday at Mimosa Hills Country Club. Read more.

GREENSBORO — David Doverspike’s nail-biting victory at No. 6 singles gave Appalachian State’s men’s tennis team a thrilling 4-3 triumph over UNC Greensboro Saturday. Read more.
Avalanche ’94 fall in games
VALLE CRUCIS — The Avalanche found a small net in their first home match of the spring soccer season Saturday at Valle Crucis. The Avalanche outshot the Gaston United Blue 20-7, led in corner kicks 7-2, but came out short on the scoreboard, losing 3-1. Read more.
