Endangered bat
An endangered bat species is feathering its nest at Grandfather Mountain in anticipation of warm weather. Well, perhaps not literally. A recent exploration and survey of a cave on Grandfather Mountain revealed 55 hibernating Virginia big-eared bats, which are on the state and federal endangered-species list. Biodiesel workshop fuels alternative energy talk
You can learn how to put an ear of corn in your fuel tank this Saturday in Boone. Appalachian State University’s Sustainable Development program will present a workshop on Saturday about its biodiesel processing facility. The collaborative project is part of an ongoing, broader effort to promote sustainable practices and has received more focus in the wake of rising gasoline prices. Read more.

The high value of low-impact development cultivated
Low-impact development was the topic du jour at last Monday’s Boone Area Chamber of Commerce Lunch & Learn. Serving was Dwane Jones with the N.C. State University Cooperative Extension Service, and, fittingly, the event was held at the agricultural conference center of Watauga County office of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service. Forest fire scorches Meat Camp tract
A forest fire in Meat Camp Tuesday destroyed approximately one acre of land. According to Rudy Johnson, ranger with the N.C. Forest Service, the call came in around 5 p.m. on March 27, and the Meat Camp Fire Department was dispatched to Mulberry Mountain Road, just off Howard’s Creek Road. Read more.

Double ducks take new flight for wetlands
Call it fund-raising on the wing. The High Country and Appalachian State University Ducks Unlimited chapters are jointly hosting a banquet Saturday, March 31, to raise money for the wetland conservation organization’s North Carolina efforts. “This is the first time we’ve done a joint event together,” said Scott Farfone, chairman of the High Country Ducks Unlimited chapter, which was reorganized last year.

Gangs aren't here — yet
Gangs have yet to make a verifiable appearance in Boone, or anywhere in Watauga County so far but that doesn’t mean county law enforcement agencies aren’t on the lookout for early signs of gang recruiting activity in the High Country. Read more.

Bill would allow schools to decide start, stop dates
Just three years after the state passed a law setting Aug. 25 as the starting date for the public school year, the issue is already up for revision. A bill introduced to the N.C. House of Representatives would allow local school boards to set their own starting and ending dates. Read more.


Twins crowned as Mr. WHS

The crowd saw double Saturday night when a pair of twin brothers won the coveted Mr. WHS title at Watauga High School while a local family saw double the generosity. Read more.



ASU nursing program offers bachelor’s degrees

Appalachian State University is nursing a new curriculum to meet a need of the state. It’s only fitting that the course of study is nursing.

Usage rates on the rise at Jones House
Can a price be placed on community? Somewhat. The Jones House Community Center is not only a historic High Country hub of culture, with events ranging from mountain music to eclectic art shows, but it’s also a sort of conference center. Read more.

On planned WHS site: Graves marked
An archeologist’s survey suggests that 19 grave sites rest on property Watauga County bought as the site for a new high school. The discovery adds evidence to the records compiled by descendants of Rueben Hartley, the man believed to have marked off the cemetery and who left the earliest written record of the graveyard by mentioning it in his 1857 will. St. Paddy’s checkpoint
A joint St. Patrick’s Day sobriety checkpoint set up by the Boone Police Department and Watauga County Sheriff’s Office netted no drunk drivers but did result in some 47 citations, according to a statement from the BPD. Read more.

Hooded assailant assaults ASU student
Two incidents in a month have local law enforcement looking for a man they believe is assaulting young women by pulling down their pants before running away. Read more.

Sheriff’s report
March 12 — Michael Vincent Galgano, 21, of 1225 U.S. 321 N, Sugar Grove, was served with an order for arrest alleging one felony count of obtaining property under false pretense. He was given a $2,000 unsecured bond and scheduled to appear June 28 in Superior Court. Read more.

Celebrity Serve kicks off Tuesday
Dinner is served — by a well-known local face. The Second Annual Celebrity Serve will benefit the recently formed local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation on Tuesday, March 27. For diners, the choices range from police chiefs to local television personalities at several area eateries. Read more.

Pedestrian audit will grade local walkways
The town of Boone is encouraging pedestrians to walk Boone. The Boone Town Council has authorized Boone Public Works to conduct a “walkability audit” to determine the pedestrian-friendliness of town sidewalks, streets and crosswalks. Read more.
