Scouts look at seniors

Eight Appalachian State professional football prospects worked out for NFL scouts during pro day activities at Kidd Brewer Stadium Tuesday. Former Mountaineer standouts Daniel Bettis, Omarr Byrom, William Mayfield, Marques Murrell, Daniel Orlebar, Jeremy Robertson, Monte Smith and Jeremy Wiggins performed various drills in front of a group of four scouts. Those four scouts disseminate the results throughout the league. Read more.

Knee injury doesn’t bother NAIA school
Seth Moore admitted that when he went down to a knee injury, he wondered if it would be the last game he would ever play. Read more.

Rockets outlast WHS
It took three A.C. Reynolds batters to beat Watauga 3-2 on a rainy night at Watauga’s field Tuesday. The Rockets’ first three batters — John Hinson, Matt Overby and Kyle Paeplow — all scored after their first at-bats Tuesday against Watauga starter Trey Moore. Hinson scored on an Overby single. Paeplow followed with a two-run home run to give the Rockets a 3-0 lead. Read more.

Pioneers claim two wins
Though Watauga’s boys’ tennis team won all 12 of it singles matches in two meets, getting there was a lot tougher Wednesday than Tuesday. Watauga’s 9-0 victory over East Burke seemed almost too easy, even with the 30-minute delay caused by the Cavaliers showing up late. The Pioneers lost a total of four games during their six singles victories. All of the Pioneers who played singles won their first sets 6-0. Read more.

Reynolds outduels Pioneers
Watauga’s softball team couldn’t quite make a comeback at home Tuesday afternoon in a 4-2 loss against AC Reynolds. The game evolved into a defensive battle filled with heads-up fielding that kept it a low scoring game. Both team’s pitchers, fighting through personal ailments, delivered solid performances. Rocket senior Lena Treadway, who recently came off abdominal surgery, earned three strikeouts and allowed only one walk. Read more.

WHS golfers settle for fifth
MORGANTON — Watauga’s boys’ golf team finished fifth overall in the weekly Northwestern 4-A Conference tournament Monday. Watauga finished with a 333, 31 strokes behind tournament winner Freedom, which won with a scored of 302. Alexander Central was second, followed by South Caldwell and East Burke. Read more.

Ammann pitches Pioneers past Titans
MARION — Watauga coach Pete Hardee has simple instructions for his pitcher, Lee Ammann, when facing McDowell’s J.J. Johnson with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Read more.

Landry to swim at Milligan College
Ron Goehring knew that putting together a swim team from scratch for Milligan College (Tenn.) would not be easy. The NAIA school, located just west of Johnson City, Tenn., was bringing back swimming after a 20-year absence. Goehring needed somebody for his women’s team who can swim the breaststroke and possibly some freestyle races when necessary. Read more.

After enjoying more than a week off for spring break, Appalachian State returned to the gridiron on Monday for a two-hour practice at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Read more.

McDowell pulls away from silent Pioneers
It’s not like Watauga made a bundle of mistakes in its 6-1 loss at McDowell Monday night. The timing of those mistakes were not in the Pioneers’ favor. Watauga made two key errors in a three-run McDowell fifth inning that gave the Titans a 5-1 lead the Pioneers could not threaten. Coupled with two leadoff hits from Kim Coley and Meggan Lytle, who both scored in the inning for McDowell, the Titans were able to put the Pioneers in their rearview mirror. Read more.

Phoenix take two of three from Mountaineers
HICKORY — Elon took two out of three games in its three-game series with Appalachian State over the weekend. The Mountaineers recovered from a 24-2 throttling Friday to beat Elon 9-8 in 12 innings Saturday. Elon pitcher Will Romanowicz tossed a complete game in the Phoenix’s 5-0 win Sunday. Read more.

Samford joins SoCon
After three years of missing a team, the Southern Conference returned to being a 12-team league when it admitted Samford University into the conference last Thursday. Samford, located in Birmingham, Ala., will officially join the conference in July of 2008. The school is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Former QB likes switch to receiver
When CoCo Hillary was recruited to Appalachian State, he was brought in with another South Carolina quarterback. Both players were a bit undersized to get a lot of attention from bigger schools. Both had good speed and could throw the ball effectively. Read more.

ASU sweeps coastal
CONWAY, S.C. — Appalachian’s bats exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to give the softball team a 9-3 victory over Coastal Carolina in the final day of three-way triple-headers at CCU. Earlier in the morning, ASU fell to Kennesaw State, 8-1. Read more.

Pioneers to play four matches this week
The bad weather that moved through the High Country toward the end of last week forced Watauga to rearrange its schedules. The Watauga baseball and softball teams will play at McDowell Monday night at their regularly scheduled times. Both teams will play in Marion following jayvee games around 6:30 p.m.
