Pioneers bash Avery County
Sarah Caldwell’s job Tuesday night was no different than it is any other night. It’s just that the Watauga goal keeper didn’t have to do it very often. Caldwell rarely touched the ball, but then Watauga’s offense, led by Anna Lisa Hart made sure she didn’t have to. Hart scored four goals, three in the first half, and the Pioneers blasted Avery 9-0 on a chilly Tuesday night at Jack Groce Stadium. Read more.

Offense lifts Watauga past Ashe County 9-2
This time, pitching and hitting arrived at the same time and at the same field for Watauga’s softball team. The Pioneers rolled to a convincing 9-2 victory over Ashe County at the Carroll Complex on a cold Tuesday afternoon. And while temperatures started to fall shortly after the 4:30 p.m. start, Watauga’s bats started to heat up from the beginning. Read more.

Appalachian State went back to practice this week with a good feeling that it would be playing in a postseason tournament. Which one they’ll make is still to be decided. Read more.

Pioneers slam Spartans
Watauga’s boys’ tennis team conquered the cold, the wind and the South Caldwell Spartans 7-2 Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers’ number one seed Graham Battle won in straight sets, 6-3 6-3, over the Spartan’s Brad Bassinger. However the score was not indicative of the tempo of the match. Battle dropped the first game of the day and had to fight off a very effective serve of Bassinger. Read more.

Brown sets new discus mark at Watauga
LENOIR — Watauga’s Paris Brown set a school record in the discus at a meet held Saturday at Hibriten. Brown’s toss of 118-feet, 2-inches set a new standard for the Pioneers. Brown also won the shot put with a throw of 33-10. Read more.

A look into the future: Bermudez, Abraham ready to step into fire
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — When Ryann Abraham and Eduardo Bermudez are on the court at the same time, the two Appalachian State basketball players have a lot in common. For starters, they’re both from Puerto Rico, having arrived in Boone last season. Abraham used a medical redshirt, while Bermudez played the entire year. Read more.

ASU’s Rubinstein earns SoCon honor
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After hitting .812 with seven doubles, nine runs scored and seven RBI in four games last week, Appalachian State outfielder David Rubinstein has been named the Southern Conference Hitter of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Rubinstein is the first Mountaineer to earn the honor since Derek Smith claimed the recognition on May 13, 2003. Read more.

Hines named SoCon’s top player
CHARLESTON, S.C. — UNC Greensboro’s Kyle Hines was named the conference Player of the Year in a vote of the group’s membership. The senior finished second in the league in scoring (20.4 ppg) and led the league in rebounding (9.0 prg). Read more.

Heartbreaker: Charleston guard carries Cougars past ASU
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — College of Charleston point guard Dontaye raper was not going to go down so easily this time. Draper, who made 1-of-15 shots in two earlier losses to Appalachian State, made sure that he would win round three. The 5-foot-10 Draper poured in 38 points and the Cougars needed all of them in a thrilling 89-87, overtime victory over Appalachian in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. Commentary: Draper true culprit in ASU defeat
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — There were many culprits to blame in Appalachian State’s 89-87 loss to College of Charleston Friday. easiest target is D.J. Thompson, Appalachian State’s All-Southern Conference point guard. Thompson, who averages 15.7 points per game, hit just 2-of-16 shots against College of Charleston Friday, settling for 11 points. NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — It was generally thought that Appalachian State would have to at least make the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament to have a chance at an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Read more.

Local roundup: Pioneers fall to Ardrey Kell
Watauga fell 11-5 to Ardrey Kell Saturday afternoon. Chaz Quinn led the Pioneers with a three-run home run and went 2-for-3. Monday’s game with Mount Tabor was called off because of bad weather. The Pioneers (1-2) open their Northwestern 4-A Conference season Friday at home against South Caldwell. Read more.

Pioneers fall twice at soccer tournament
The Watauga girls’ soccer team suffered losses to New Bern and Page high schools, taking fourth place as they hosted some of the area’s top teams at the Mellow Mushroom Invitational Friday and Saturday.
