Monday afternoon’s workout, which lasted about an hour and 45 minutes, was no different. The Mountaineers looked sharp and enthusiastic while being put through some individual and position drills in weather that was warm during the first part, but turned chilly when the sun went down.

“They’ve been ready and excited about practice since we started indoor running,” Moore said. “You could see the look in their eye that they’ve been ready to practice.”

“It was a good day,” added rising senior safety Corey Lynch. “We got a lot accomplished today and we’re on the road again for the long run.”

Moore said much of the reason for Appalachian State’s successful start can be attributed to the condition the players are in. The team had been participating in running drills at 5:30 a.m., conducted by strength and conditioning coach Jeff Dillman, the weeks leading into spring practice.

“They’re in great shape,” Moore added. “Jeff’s got them in good shape right now. They are about where you hoped they would be.”

The team worked out in helmet and shorts with no other pads. They’ll put on shoulder pads by Wednesday, if the weather holds, and eventually will start working out in full pads for five practices.

The Mountaineers have 34 days to get 15 practices in. Their first game is Sept. 1 at Michigan.

“If we can get six days in, then it would be a real plus for us,” Moore said.

“We worked on every aspect of the game,” Lynch added. “We were starting out on offense and starting out on defense putting in the building blocks.”

There were a handful of position changes. Anthony Cruver was also moved from receiver to defensive back.

Former Freedom High running back Trey Hennessee was moved to tight end in an effort to replace Daniel Bettis and Nic Cardwell, who were seniors last year.

“You look at two or three guys in different positions,” Moore said. “One of the good things in spring to get accomplished is to get the right guys in the right spots. I think he can do it. He’s a big guy who can run and catch.”
