Watauga’s Savva Kostis has faced pressure situations before. As Watauga’s place kicker, his 20-yard field goal with 10.5 seconds left in the game gave the Pioneers a 20-19 state 4-A playoff win over North Forsyth, Watauga’s first victory in the playoffs since 1978. Read more.

Davidson rallies past ASU
Appalachian State’s game with Davidson got off to a terrible start. The ending proved to be much more interesting. Shaking off 27 turnovers, 18 of them in the first half, Davidson overcame a late, three-point deficit to beat the Mountaineers 68-64 Tuesday night at the Holmes Center. The loss left the Mountaineers (11-17, 5-12 SoCon) in the bottom half of the Southern Conference, meaning they’ll have to play Tuesday night in the first round of the SoCon Tournament, which is in Charleston, S.C., instead of getting a bye the first night. WINSTON-SALEM — Appalachian State erased a 7-0 second-inning deficit with three runs in the third and seven in the fourth and held on for a 10-9 win over Wake Forest on Tuesday at Hooks Stadium.

Mustangs run to victory
Myers Park’s beginning proved to be better than Watauga’s finish. Myers Park, the No. 3 seed from the Southwestern 4-A Conference, rang up a 23-point lead, which was too much for the Pioneers to overcome. Though Watauga outscored the Mustangs the rest of the game, it was not enough as Myers Park claimed an 85-76 victory in the first round of the NCHSAA state 4-A basketball playoffs. Read more.

CULLOWHEE — Appalachian State jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead and rebuffed a second-half Western Carolina surge to defeat the Catamounts 76-65. Read more.

Before we begin, let me make it known that I have absolutely nothing against Senior Night. Appalachian State’s basketball teams will be hosting their Senior Night’s this week. The women’s team had its night Tuesday when they hosted Davidson. The men’s team hosts UNC Greensboro Thursday night and will honor its five seniors. Read more.

Appalachian knocks off Wichita State
WICHITA, Kan. — Appalachian State coach Houston Fancher has no problem being a thief, at least when it comes to stealing plays from other programs. Fancher was up late Friday night/Saturday morning watching film of the Mountaineers’ BracketBuster opponent, Wichita State, when he saw a play Drake ran against the Shockers. Read more.

Mountaineers complete sweep
CLEMSON, S.C. — After trailing by as many as 23 1/2points through 12 events, Appalachian State’s women’s indoor track and field came back to edge out Western Carolina by 1 1/2 points and earn its seventh-straight Southern Conference Championship, Sunday at the two-day championship meet at the Clemson Indoor Track facility. CHARLOTTE — Watauga’s wrestling team is sending four wrestlers to the state finals.
Two — Travis Coffey and Savva Kostis, won regional championships in their respective weight classes Saturday. Two others — Michael Townsend and Cody McGuire — finished fourth. Read more.
Payne checks in on alma mater
WICHITA, Kan.— Most Division I basketball programs have produced players who have played professionally and Appalachian State is no different. However, few basketball programs have produced pro football players. In that case, Appalachian State is the exception to the rule.
