There are several reasons why Appalachian State’s Bracket Busters game at Wichita State Saturday is important. starters, it gives the Mountaineers (20-6, 12-3 SoCon) a chance to see how they look against one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Thompson scores 27 in win over Mocs
For the past two seasons, Chattanooga has been a major thorn in the collective side of Appalachian State’s men’s basketball team. The Mocs have knocked the Mountaineers out of the Southern Conference Tournament the past two seasons, not allowing Appalachian State to reach the finals of either season.

Eagles rally past ASU women in second half
Georgia Southern had every reason to run out of steam at the Holmes Center Wednesday night. For starters, the Eagles had been away from home for six straight days. Then the fact that they were playing their third game during that stretch should guarantee that they would be tired, at least in the second half. Read more.
Appalachian Ski hosts Special Olympic events
Appalachian Ski Mountain played host to the southeast regional Special Olympics ski races last Monday and Tuesday. The 167 athletes ranged from 18 to about 50 years old and live with disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, and mental retardation. Groups from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana came to the High Country to participate. Read more.

Pioneers can’t overcome slow first quarter
ICARD — Watauga’s girls’ basketball team has looked for consistent offense all season long. A slow start against East Burke, in the first round of the Northwestern 4-A Conference Tournament, would not be the best way for the Pioneers to beat the Cavaliers. Read more.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Shante Williams returned to her hometown to put up her first career double-double with career-highs 15 points and 12 boards, but her night was spoiled as Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team fell 63-52 to Wofford Monday at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Read more.

CHAPEL HILL — Watauga’s Chris Symonovicz finished second in the high jump in the NCHSAA state 4-A indoor track and field final held Saturday at North Carolina. Read more.
Storm u-11 captures KYS Shootout win
KINGSPORT, Tenn. — The Watauga Storm boys under-11 basketball team won the 2007 KYS Hoops Shootout Feb. 4. The Storm beat Indian Springs 21-18 in the final, making it the second time the Storm beat that team. Earlier in the tournament, Watauga beat Indian Springs 30-19 after taking a 23-4 halftime lead. Watauga girls start over Monday at East Burke
It has been a difficult season for the Watauga girls’ basketball team. The Pioneers have suffered through a 5-18 campaign, 1-11 in the Northwestern 4-A Conference. They ended up finishing last in the NWC after Alexander Central beat them last Tuesday night. Read more.
