Pioneers shock Rockets

ASU’s earned community’s fan support
For a college basketball fan, our state is a great place to grow up. At a young age, we can readily identify our favorite shade of blue, often before learning the rest of the primary colors. Or, if you were the kind of kid who proudly displayed your “individuality” by sporting a Michael Jackson “Thriller” jacket, you might have been an N.C. State fan. Read more.

ASU never trails in victory over Charleston
College of Charleston men’s basketball coach Bobby Cremins has returned to Boone several times since he left Appalachian State for Georgia Tech in 1979. He’s even been back in Boone as a coach, bringing Georgia Tech to Varsity Gym in the 1990s. He’s been to the Holmes Center as a broadcaster, but never as a coach in the in the Southern Conference. Cremins’ return spoiled
Appalachian State’s players knew that their game with College of Charleston meant more than just a run-of-the-mill Southern Conference men’s basketball game. They were very aware that Charleston coach Bobby Cremins coached at Appalachian State and guided the Mountaineers to their first NCAA tournament appearance. Read more.

Wichita State added to schedule
Those who chose the teams to participate in the Bracket Busters event flattered Appalachian State when they picked the Mountaineers to participate this year. They performed another bit of flattery Monday night, but they didn’t do Appalachian any favors when they matched the Mountaineers with Wichita State. Read more.

ASU drives past Furman
The only time the Furman Paladins held the lead at the Holmes Center on Monday was in the ensuing 1:35 just after the opening tip. From there, it was all Appalachian State. Read more.


Pioneers settle for fifth
SAWMILLS — It was a long day of takedowns and pins, as seven teams battled it out at the Northwestern 4-A Conference tournament last Saturday at South Caldwell. Alexander Central came out on top with 154 points and Freedom finished a close second with 153 points. Read more.

Storm takes second in tournament
PULASKI, Va. — The Watauga Storm boys under-13 basketball team finished in second place in the 2007 Pulaski Va. Shootout. The Storm opened the tournament by defeating the Franklin Co. (Va.) Rockets 54-52. The Storm won the game when Matthew Proffitt scored as time expired. Read more.

Blue Ridge wins first meet
The newly formed Blue Ridge Swimmers, a group of homeschooled, high school age swimmers, has competed in two meets and are doing very well, beating North Surry, Forbush, and Starmount in their last meet and winning all five of their relays. Read more.

Watauga duo collects titles
Travis Coffey (right) wrestles against A.C. Reynolds’ Daniel Owenby in the 121-pound class at the NWC Tournament Saturday. Coffey went on to win the 121-pound weight class. Watauga’s Savva Kostis was the Pioneers’ other league champion. Kostis won the 140-pound weight class. Michael Townsend (103 pounds) and Cody McGuire (119) finished second in their respective weight classes, and Justin Hyatt was third at 145. Ben Chappell, at 160 pounds was fourth. ASU guard hits 10-of-12 3-pointers in win
If 3-point shooting is contagious, Nate Cranford was the carrier for Appalachian State in the Mountaineers’ 95-54 thumping of The Citadel at the Holmes Center Saturday. Read more.

Pioneers swim in NWC finals
VALDESE — Watauga’s swim teams competed in the Northwestern 4-A Conference championships Saturday. Watauga’s boys finished second behind East Burke while the Watauga girls finished fourth behind meet winner A.C. Reynolds. Both East Burke and Reynolds were favored to win their respective meets. McDowell slips past Pioneers
After winning three straight games by close scores, Watauga fell to Northwestern 4-A Conference rival McDowell in much the same way. Read more.

Mocs roll past ASU wrestlers
Appalachian State fell to 4-15 and 0-3 in the Southern Conference with a 35-3 home loss to No. 18 Chattanooga, the defending conference champions. Read more.

ASU women pound Cougars
Appalachian State held College of Charleston to just 10 first-half points in its 69-47 pummeling of the Cougars at the Holmes Center, where they celebrated the win on Senior Day/Alumni Day Saturday afternoon. Read more.

McDowell cruises to victory
For a quarter, Watauga was able to stay close to powerful McDowell. Then the second quarter took place and the Pioneers fell behind for good in their 83-55 loss to the Titans. Read more.
