Mary Z. Watson Day
Mrs. Mary Z. Watson Day, 76, of Boone, N.C., formerly of 220 N. Murphy St., Mountain City, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone, N.C.
She was born on June 4, 1930 in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Turner and Blanch Miller Watson.
Mrs. Day was a professional fish fly tier. She was a member of God’s Country Church.
Survivors include her son, V. J. “Jay” Day and wife, Joy, of Mountain City.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde J. Day.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Ron Manuel and Pastor Jeff Meadows officiating. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Woods, Clifford Woods, David Manuel, Larry Danner, John Holloway, and David Holloway. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Robert Griffith, staff of Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation, and the men of God’s Country Church. A private committal service and interment will be conducted Friday, Jan. 26, at White Cemetery on Shulls Mills Rd., Boone, N.C.

Craig M. Hofmann
Mr. Craig M. Hofmann, 55, of 308 Lakeview Drive, Deep Gap, formerly of Saint Joseph, Mich., died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2007.
He was born Oct. 31, 1951 in Bergen County, N.J., a son of the late Herbert and Lorraine Klein Hofmann.
Mr. Hofmann was a member of New Life Fellowship, Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Hofmann; two daughters, Lorraine Hofmann of Phoenix, Ariz., and Rachel Hofmann of Deep Gap; two brothers, Herby Hofmann of Narrowsburg, N.Y., and Dean Hofmann of Lava, N.Y.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2007, at 3:30, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 2:30 until 3:30. Officiating will be Pastor Tony Cirigliano.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6-8 p.m., at Hampton Funeral Service.

Juanita Rose Brown Tobin
Mrs. Juanita Rose Brown Tobin, 91, of 366 Chestnut Drive, Blowing Rock, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2007 at the Davant Extended Care Center.
She was born in Nashville, Tenn., a daughter of the late Charles F. and Hattie Young Brown.
Mrs. Tobin was a registered nurse and wrote numerous articles for the Blowing Rocket, and was a well known local poet. She was an active member of the High Country Writers Club, and the Boone Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Surviving are one son, Paul Tobin and wife, Judy, of West Jefferson; three grandchildren, Chris Tobin of Mebane, N.C., Mark Tobin of Philadelphia, Pa., and Suzanne Tobin of Greensboro; two step-grandchildren, Matt Silverberg of Boone, and Jill Tohber of Santa Monica, Calif.; two brothers, Charles E. Brown of Trenton, Fla. and Frank Brown of Auburn, Ala.; and one sister-in-law, Monnye Brown of Trenton, Fla.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted Sunday morning, Feb. 11, 2007 at 11 o’clock at the Boone Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

George McMillen Barrett
Mr. George McMillen Barrett, 55, of Swannanoa, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007. He passed peacefully in his home around 11:45 in the morning. He fought a long battle and is now able to rest.
He was born on Sept. 17, 1951.
The world does not understand and is not made for people as beautiful as him. It is nearly impossible to sum up George’s life in a few paragraphs because everyday was a new adventure. He had too many accomplishments and business ventures to name, as he lived from one crazy idea to the next. He lived his life to the fullest with never a dull moment and thrived off the energy of the people he loved. Those of you that had the opportunity to experience George and his adventures know exactly what we are talking about. We hope that when you think of him you will remember the wild times and tall tales that truly made him unique. Please keep him in your heart and remember to cherish the ones that love you and that you love. Time goes by so fast. We love you Big George and will miss you and love you forever.
He is survived by his wife, Tanya C. Barrett of Greensboro; his three children, Stacey Keever and husband, Dennis, of Etowah, George McMillen Barrett, Jr. of Orlando, Fla., and Frank Todd Barrett of Hendersonville; two sisters, Sandra Purro of Charleston, S.C. and Maria Belk of Charlotte; his brother, Charles Stuart of Charlotte and also by Evelyn Josephine Ellred. The sadness of losing Big George will never go away, but neither will the great memories. You always have been and will always be our hero. We love you Dad.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Cox Barrett and Elizabeth McMillen Barrett, of Flat Rock.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 25, at the First Baptist Church of Swannanoa. Rev. Steve Rayburn will officiate. A committal service will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Churchyard in Flat Rock.

Gary L. Blevins
Mr. Gary L. Blevins, 51, of Boone, died Friday, Jan.19, 2007.
He was born May 18, 1955, in Middleton, Ohio, a son of Thelma Blevins and the late Robert J. “Bob” Blevins.
Mr. Blevins was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Gary Lee Blevins, Jr. and wife, Carla, of Fredericksburg, Va.; one granddaughter, Jessimina Blevins of Fredericksburg, Va.; his mother, Thelma L. Blevins of Woodbridge, Va.; three sisters, Louise Presnell and husband, Floyd, of Rhodhiss, Nancy McKendree and husband, Bill, of Nokesville, Va. and Joan Conley and husband, Donald, of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Robert A. Blevins of Woodbridge, Va. and Donald R. Blevins and wife, Pat, of Remington, Va. He is also survived by two nephews and eight nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. “Bob” Blevins; and one sister, Aileen Schutte.
Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Tommy McClure and the Rev. Roger Greene. Burial will follow in the Baptist Chapel Cemetery in Ashe County.

Clark Cecil Harman
Mr. Clark Cecil Harman, 94, of Westview Street, Lenoir, died Sunday morning, Jan. 21, 2007 at Gateway Nursing Center.
He was born Jan. 17, 1913 in the Beech Creek community of Watauga County to the late Abner Harman and the late Emma Keller Harman.
Mr. Harman graduated from Cove Creek High School and Appalachian State University with a Master’s Degree in Education. During World War II he served as a medic with the 747th Tank Battalion and went from the beaches of Normandy to Berlin. He was retired from the Caldwell County School System where he was principal of Valmead School from 1945 to 1976. First Baptist Church of Lenoir was his church home for about 60 years. There he served as a Life Deacon. He received special recognition in 2001 for his 45 years of service to the Kiwanis Club of Lenoir.
Survivors include his wife of 58 1/2 years, Helen Sherwood Harman; one daughter, Jean Harman Branch and husband, Steve, of Lenoir; one son, Dr. Glenn Sherwood Harman of Galena, Ill.; one brother, Fred Harman and wife, Margaret, of Somerset, Ky.; and one sister, Edna Fairchild of Knoxville, Tenn. Also surviving are two grandsons, David Doll and wife, Eileen, of Seminole, Fla., and Justin Branch of Cary; and one great-grandson, Alex Doll.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Lon Harman.
Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lenoir with Dr. David Smith officiating. The family will receive friends in the Ladies Parlor of First Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Thursday.
A burial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Milton A. Chase
Mr. Milton A. Chase, 92, resident at the Inn at Glenbridge, formerly of Bethesda, Md., passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2007, at the residence.
He was born and raised in New York City.
Mr. Chase served as an Electrical Engineer for the Rural Electrification Administration for 24 years, where he helped set up cooperative and municipal power systems throughout the country. He also worked at the Department of Interior and for the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation. Mr. Chase enjoyed his retirement years traveling with his beloved wife, Charlotte. He was a member of the Washington Ethical Society, where he served as President, Adjunct Leader, and as a teacher in the Sunday School.
Mr. Chase loved to write. He authored “Search for Power,” in 1985 and “Electric Power, an Industry at a Crossroads,” in 1988. During his retirement, he composed “chapters” about topics of interest to him. These were collected into a book called “Chapters,” copies of which were presented to him and his guests at his 90th birthday party in 2004. Mr. Chase and 23 of his relatives wrote “Childhood Memories, Recollections of a Family.” The latter two books were published in Boone.
Although Mr. Chase lived in Boone for just a year and a half, he came to love this area, marveling about the beauty of the sky. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Inn at Glenbridge, as well as his wonderful caregivers who kept him company during the day, and the staff of the Hunan Restaurant, for the love they showed Mr. Chase.
Mr. Chase was married to the late Charlotte Zierlin Chase for 67 years. He is survived by his sister, Edith Weber of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; daughters, Emily Alma of Chico, Calif. and Louise Shultz and husband, Mike, of San Francisco, Calif.; and son, Saul Chase and wife, Nan, of Boone. He is also survived by grandchildren Matthew Patchell and wife, Ruth, of San Francisco, Calif., Amy Herrera and husband, Ramon, of Alameda, Calif., Daniel Chase of Asheville, Marina Chase of Charlottesville, Va., and Austin Chase of Chapel Hill. Mr. Chase is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Nina Patchell and Diego and Marisa Herrera; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Boone on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The family will receive guests at 3:00 p.m. The memorial service will begin at 3:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Mr. Chase’s memory to The U.S. Fund For UNICEF, 29 W. 38th St., 11th floor, New York, NY 10018.

Sherry Hope DeLane
Mrs. Sherry Hope DeLane, 56, of Crealock Place, Cornelius, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Forest City and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Tony DeLane; two sons, Stephen Sorrow, Jr. and wife, Dixie, of Boone, and Chip Irvin and wife, Kelly, of Charlotte; one daughter, Kriste DeLane of Charlotte; her parents, Carl Toney of Forest City and Shirley Babington Toney of Ellenboro; one brother, Dane Toney of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Lundy Toney Wright and husband, Wilbur, of Ellenboro and Donna Walton and husband, Nick, of Forest City; and three grandchildren, Amber Osteen and husband, Matthew, Aubrey Goss and Ryan Goss and wife, Georgia; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Padgett and King Mortuary in Forest City, officiated by the Rev. Wes Judy. The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1-2 p.m., one hour prior to services, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park.

Gale Dean ‘Trey’ Howell III
Mr. Gale Dean Howell, III, better known as “Trey,” 29, of Boone, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007.
He was born in Ft. Stewart, Fla., on March 1, 1977 to Gale Dean “Butch” Howell and Kathy Marie Dixon Howell. He worked as a painter.
Survivors include a son, Anthony Winebarger of Boone; his father and step-mother, Butch and Maggie Howell of West Jefferson; his mother, Kathy Howell of Boone; two brothers, Dustin Howell of Boone and Michael Howell of West Jefferson; a sister, Michelle Brooks of West Jefferson; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gale Dean Howell of West Jefferson.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Samuel Titus Morgan Jr.
Mr. Samuel Titus Morgan, Jr., 88, of Roan Highlands Nursing Center, formerly of Blowing Rock, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in Roan Mountain, Tenn.
He was born August 19, 1916 in Union County, N.J., a son of the late Samuel Titus Morgan, Sr. and Amelia Hoffacker Morgan.
Mr. Morgan was a retired Petroleum and Tanker Broker in New York City, and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 90 in Boone, and was a former member and past Finance Officer of American Legion Post 256 in Blowing Rock. He was past President of the Rotary Club in Blowing Rock, and was recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1986. Mr. Morgan was a member of Saint Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock.
He is survived by one son, Robert "Bob" Morgan of Boone; and two nephews, Kenneth J. Burkhardt of Quaker Town, N.J., and Richard M. Burkhardt of Chattanooga, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Ford Morgan; his father and mother, Samuel Titus Morgan, Sr. and Amelia Hoffacker Morgan; one sister, Virginia Burkhardt; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth J. Burkhardt.
A memorial service was conducted Monday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2007, at Saint Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church. Officiating was Father Rick Lawler.

Elynor Crumpler Parham
Mrs. Elynor Crumpler Parham, 87, formerly of Greensboro and Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care in Boone.
She was born April 28, 1919 in Orlando, W.V., a daughter of the late Urban Carden Stanard and Bonnie Pepper Stanard.
Mrs. Parham worked for Montaldo's of Winston-Salem for 32 years, then operated Crumpler's Antiques in Greensboro for 27 additional years.
Survivors include one son, Mark Stanard Crumpler and wife, Litt, of Blowing Rock; and a granddaughter, Catherine Crumpler Scantlin and husband, Brett, of Banner Elk.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Newton Crumpler; her second husband, William Hood Parham; and one son, Joseph Thomas Crumpler.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2007, at 12:00, at the Forsyth Memorial Park Chapel in Winston-Salem. Officiating was Kermit Bailey.

Teresa Marie ‘Terree’ Walters
Ms. Teresa Marie “Terree” Walters, 56, of Banner Elk, N.C., died Dec. 21, 2006, at Palmetto Hospice of Charleston, in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. She had battled Acute Myelo Leukemia since the spring.
She was born in Memphis, Tenn., July 3, 1950, the daughter of Thajo “Bill” Billingsley, now of Banner Elk, and the late Frances Cook Billingsley.
Ms. Walters was the Registered Occupational Therapist at Roan Mountain Rehabilitation Center. She also worked for Toe River Home Health and was on call for other facilities throughout the last few years. She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Occupational Therapy. She was truly an asset to the people she helped through her work, because she loved her work as much as she loved people. Ms. Walters was active with the Red Hats. She was active with church work and spoke often of the work she loved the most, an orphanage and preacher schools in India.
Surviving are her daughter, Candy Hughes of Early, Tex.; one son, Kevin A. Carpenter of Banner Elk; a step-son, B.J. Walters of Clemson, S.C.; a grandson, Cameron Hughes; her father and step-mother, Bill and Georgia Billingsley of Banner Elk; one sister, Carol Hilton of Harleyville, S.C.; and one sister-in-law, Nancy Billingsley of Titusville, Fla.
In addition to her mother and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Mark Billingsley of Titusville, Fla.
Memorial services were held at the Banner Elk Church of Christ on Dec. 28, 2006, and burial was in Princeton, West Virginia, beside her late husband, Jeffrey Lyn Walters.

Anne Pearce Weaver
Mrs. Anne Pearce Weaver, 85, of Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away Jan. 7, 2007.
She was born July 12, 1921, in Augusta, Ga., to Henry Lester and Gretchen Meyer Pearce.
Mrs. Weaver was actively involved in the Shepherd’s Center and the Very Vegetarian Society. She was also a charter member of Highland Presbyterian Church. In 1938, she graduated from Reynolds High School, where she won two senior superlatives, Best All Around and Best Athlete, and graduated from UNC Greensboro in 1942. Mrs. Weaver retired in 1983 as recreation director at the YWCA after 23 years.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Wesley Weaver Jr.; children, Wesley Weaver III and wife, Pat, of Boone, Ron Weaver and wife, Janice, of Roanoke, Va., and Carol Smith and husband, Jim, of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren, Rachel Weaver Strife, Matt, Adam, Gretchen and Shane Smith; Rebecca and Brad Weaver; two great-grandchildren, Josie and Peter Strife IV; and seven nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Leck, John, Frank, Wig, Sid and Sam Pearce; and a niece, Judy Pearce Herring.
A celebration of life was held at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Highland Presbyterian Church. The family received friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
