Pioneers hold on to beat Wilkes Central
For a chance, Watauga’s boys’ basketball team did not need any last-second heroics to win. Instead, the Pioneers built an eight-point, fourth-quarter lead and held on to claim a 79-71 victory over Wilkes Central Tuesday at Lentz-Eggers Gym. The Pioneers (11-6) had to play without 6-foot-5 center Seth Moore, who was out with a knee injury and may not be available for Watauga’s Northwestern 4-A Conference showdown with South Caldwell Friday.

Terriers trip up ASU
After leading for most of the way, Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team fell to visiting Wofford in the final minutes 69-65 Tuesday at the Holmes Center. The loss was the fourth straight for the Mountaineers, who fell to 8-10 overall, 2-5 in the Southern Conference. Read more

From the moment Watauga claimed a 2-0 lead, the Pioneers never lost control of Wilkes Central. The Pioneers went up by 10 points on Wilkes Central in the first quarter and never looked back in their 58-35 victory Tuesday at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Watauga (4-12) never trailed. Read more

Around the area: ASU to play Coppin State in Kannapolis
Due to a late change in Savannah State’s 2007 schedule, Appalachian State’s baseball will host Coppin State, rather than SSU, in a doubleheader Feb. 17-18 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis. The twin bill begins Saturday at noon, while Sunday’s first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Read more

U.S. Senate recognizes ASU football
Appalachian State’s football team was recognized by the U.S. Senate after a resolution was passed honoring the Mountaineers. The resolution was submitted by North Carolina Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr. In December the Mountaineers repeated as Division I-AA champions with a 28-17 victory over Massachusetts.

Post players dominate in ASU victory
Just one game earlier, Appalachian State’s three top post players looked lost when attacking the basket. In Appalachian State’s 100-91 win over Western Carolina at the Holmes Center Monday night, Donte Minter, Davis Bowne and Jeremy Clayton didn’t need a road map to get to the hoop. Read more

Pioneers rally from 17 down to beat Central
TAYLORSVILLE — The Watauga Pioneer boys’ basketball team erased a 17 point deficit in the fourth quarter, including a seven point deficit with a minute to go, to force overtime and eventually defeat Alexander Central 96-95 Friday. Watauga played the majority of the second half without Seth Moore who went down with a knee injury. To make matters worse, most of the Pioneers’ starters were in foul trouble. Read more

WHS returns to pool
VALDESE — Watauga’s swim teams returned successfully to the pool following winter break by winning the boys’ meet and finishing second in the girls’ meet in Burke County. Watauga’s boys team finished with 146 points, easily outdistancing A.C. Reynolds with 95 points and McDowell, which finished with 35. Read more

ASU blows 14-point lead in home loss
Following their 64-63 victory over Appalachian State Saturday afternoon, the Elon Phoenix players ran off the Holmes Center floor as if somebody would make them give the win back if they didn’t. Read more

UNCG holds off ASU 68-61
Whitney Ketner recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Appalachian State’s women's basketball team fell to UNC Greensboro 68-61 Saturday in front of 1,255 at the Holmes Center. It was Appalachian State’s third straight loss. Read more

Cougars knock off WHS girls

TAYLORSVILLE — Alexander Central girls’ basketball picked up its first conference win in three years Friday night, beating Watauga 54-45. The Cougars’ last Northwestern 4A conference win was in the 2003 season against the Pioneers. Watauga had won six straight in the series. Read more
