Major crimes on the rise in Boone
The number of burglaries in Boone fell significantly last year but aggravated assaults nearly doubled, according to preliminary crime statistics released by the Boone Police Department this week. Read more
Owens Drive residents asked to ‘flush’ pipes

Rep. Cullie Tarleton sworn in
Before a standing-room-only crowd, Cullie Tarleton took the oath of office in what he said was an emotional time for him and his family. Tarleton, a retired broadcaster from Blowing Rock, was sworn in as the state representative for North Carolina’s District 93 on Saturday. The ceremony was held in the Watauga County Administration Building in Boone, in keeping with Tarleton’s desire to be sworn in locally rather than in Raleigh. Read more

President Bush’s plan to send more troops to Iraq is getting a mixed reception in Congress but received measured support from North Carolina’s Republican representatives. At least one local group, however, plans to protest the proposal. Read more

Officers with the Boone Police Department Investigations Division arrested a local man in connection with a Nov. 3 break-in of Expressions located at 207 New Market Centre. Read more
Committee of 100 rouses to plan biz center
The Appalachian Enterprise Center should be much more enterprising later this year. Watauga County received grants to help revitalize the center, which has served various job-creation and economic development capacities since the county purchased and developed the property in the 1990s. Known locally as “the old Revco building,” it’s part of the Human Services Complex in Boone and was originally a small business incubator. Read more

Franklin Graham, president of Boone-based Samaritan’s Purse Christian relief organization, has been named one of the most influential Christians in the country by a leading religious magazine. Read more
For ASU professor, success is in the bag
An Appalachian State University professor hit a hole in one with a new invention. Donald Corey, assistant professor of industrial design, is the inventor of the “Hold-N-One,” a wall-mounted golf bag holder. Inventions and innovations are often designed to remedy a problem or fault, and Corey realized there was a need for Hold-N-One after a couple of unfortunate accidents with his golf bag. Read more
