Della Hayes Austin
Mrs. Della Hayes Austin, 92, of Boone, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 9, 2007 at the Davant Rehab and Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock.
She was born Oct. 23, 1914 in Watauga County, a daughter of William Hardin and Frances Lou Edmisten Hayes.
Mrs. Austin was a life member of Three Forks Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Claude Austin and wife, Virginia, of Boone; and one granddaughter, Claudia Austin of Sanford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Grady Austin; one son, William Craig Austin; and two sisters, Mary Johnson and Virginia Bowles.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Three Forks Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. David Ricker, the Rev. Homer Greene, and the Rev. Lynn Powers. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Otis L. “Dugan” Carden Jr.
Mr. Otis L. “Dugan” Carden, Jr., 77, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away recently following a lengthy illness.
He was a proud retired veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. He also was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at various golf courses in the High Country when visiting the area.
Surviving are his wife, Marian; four step-children, Susan Webb and husband, Jerry, of Bethlehem, Ga., Becky Million and husband, Ron, of Boone, N.C., Tom Aycock and wife, Melanie, of Blountstown, Fla., and Ted Aycock and Dianna Seiffert of Vancouver, WA. Also surviving are grandchildren, Kim Baskerville and husband, Dan, of Atlanta, Ga., Diana Correll and husband, Andy, of Hull, Ga., Lee and Isaac Million of Boone, N.C., and T.J. and Austin Aycock of Blountstown, Fla. Three great-grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service and interment with full military honors will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007 at 11:00 at Arlington Park Cemetery in Jacksonville, Fla.
The family wishes to thank the fine staff of the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Lake City, Fla. for their excellent, loving care given to Mr. Carden during his numerous stays there. The staff’s devotion to him and to all of America’s veterans there will be forever appreciate.
Reeda Wood Carmichael
Mrs. Reeda Wood Carmichael, 79, of Blowing Rock, N.C., formerly of Keystone Heights, Fla., died Monday evening, Jan. 8, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care in Boone.
She was born Feb. 3, 1927 in Plant City, Fla., a daughter of the late John and Grace Rice Wood.
Mrs. Carmichael was a retired bookkeeper for the city of Jacksonville, and a member of Keystone Heights United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Terry Sumner and husband, Rodney, of Blowing Rock, N.C.; one son, Timothy D. Carmichael and wife, Lori, of Keystone Heights, Fla.; one sister, Virginia Miley and husband, Odell, of Lakeland, Fla.; two granddaughters, Amy Smiley of Raleigh, N.C., and Wendy Insley of Blowing Rock; and two grandsons, Clint Carmichael of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jeffery Carmichael of Keystone Heights. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Carmichael; and one brother, Vernon Wood.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2007, at 3:00 o'clock, at Keystone Heights United Methodist Church in Keystone Heights, Fla. Officiating will be the Rev. Thomas Gensel. Burial will follow in the Keystone Heights Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6-8 p.m., at Moring Funeral Home in Melrose, Fla.

Pauline “Polly” B. Dunne
Mrs. Pauline “Polly” B. Dunne, 90, of Blowing Rock, N.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007.
She was born in Atlanta, Ga., on June 30, 1916, to Dr. Charles Matthews and Lucilla Middleton Barnwell.
Growing up in Atlanta, Mrs. Dunne graduated from North Avenue Presbyterian School and later from Duke University where she received a degree in Psychology. After graduation she moved on to work for the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, from which she later retired and moved to Blowing Rock.
She had many interests and remained active until her death. She especially enjoyed training and participating in Elderhostel and the Institute of Senior Scholars. Mrs. Dunne was a member of MENSA and the Tri Delta Sorority.
Survivors include her brother, James M. Barnwell; two sisters-in-law; four nieces and four nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederic J. Dunne; and her brother, Dr. Charles M. Barnwell, Jr.
At her request, her body was donated to the Duke University Medical School.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 3098 St. Anne’s Lane N.W., Atlanta, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Beryl Ann August Hanft
Mrs. Beryl Ann August Hanft, 66, of 190 Chestnut Street, Boone, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 10, 2007.
She was a founding member of OASIS, it’s first treasurer and a member of it’s first group of telephone respondents. Mrs. Hanft served two terms on the WYN Board and she was a county-wide Girl Scout Cookie Chairperson. She was a founding member of the Boone Jewish Community, and served several terms on it’s Executive Board and was the current president of the B.J.C. Sisterhood.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Sheldon Hanft; three daughters, Lila Hanft and husband, David Roberts, of Cleveland, Ohio, Melissa Anderson and husband, Varen, of Pinehurst, and Jennifer Hanft of Laramie, Wyom.; her step-father, David Labovitz, of New York, New York; three grandsons, Alexander "Sascha" Roberts, and Max Roberts, both of Cleveland, and Zach Anderson of Pinehurst; and one granddaughter, Zoe Anderson of Pinehurst.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bernard B. August.
Services will be conducted Friday morning, Jan. 12, 2007, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 9:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Rabbi David Kraus. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday morning, from 9-11 a.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Earline Marie Bentley Lail
Mrs. Earline Marie Bentley Lail, 83, formerly of Hickory, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007 at Conover Nursing & Rehab Center.
She was born Feb. 17, 1923 in Watauga County, the daughter of the late Roby Dewey and Ollie Mae Bentley.
Mrs. Lail had worked in the hosiery industry and was a member of Bethlehem Church of God.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret Ann L. Johnson and husband, Jimmy Ray, of Hickory; Donna Lynn Pope and husband, Jerry, of Granite Falls; sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin G. “Sonny” Lail of Newton; Dallas Eugene “Gene” Lail and wife, Gale, of Byhalia, MS; Lonnie D. Lail and wife, Marilyn, of Hickory; Ricky W. Lail of Hickory; sisters, Maggie Hicks of Bethlehem, Brenda Cornett of Vilas, N.C.; Katie Sue Shore of Boone, N.C.; brothers, Lewis Bentley of Hickory; Robert Bentley of Vilas, N.C.; Billy Bentley of Vilas, N.C.; Sam Bentley of Vilas, N.C.; Ned Bentley of Boone, N.C.; 15 Grandchildren, Jimmy Johnson, Jr., Donna Johnson Heavner, Melea Glen Lail, Marina Gay Kelly, Marisa Setzer, Merrie Ann Boltin, Dawn Lail, Lonnie D. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007 at Bethlehem Church of God. Rev. Howard Smith will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Jimmy Johnson, Jr., Lonnie D. Lail, Jr., Matthew S. Lail, Troy W. Bumgarner, Brandon W. Lail, Heath P. Lail and Chad W. Lail.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon to 1:45 p.m. on Friday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of Margaret and Jimmy Ray Johnson, 3621 33rd Ave Pl NE, Hickory, N.C.

Harry Luther Lowman
Mr. Harry Luther Lowman, 36, of Pilot Ridge Road, Blowing Rock, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at his residence unexpectedly.
He was born March 1, 1970, in Catawba County, to Harry Levi Lowman and the late Kathleen Huffman Lowman.
Survivors include his father, Harry Levi Lowman of Linville; two sisters and brother-in-laws, Debbie and Eddy Martin of Vale, Neoma and Rocky Caldwell of Clermont, Fla.; a brother, Terry Winters of Shell Creek, Tenn.; two nieces, Casey Blair of Maiden and Jessica Caldwell of Claremont; two nephews, Rex Caldwell and Joseph Caldwell of Clermont, Fla.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jack McQueen
Mr. Jack McQueen, 71, of 475 Junaluska Road, Boone, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care.
He was born Jan. 13, 1935, in Watauga County, a son of the late Ebb and Molly Grimes McQueen. He was a retired L.P.N. from Watauga Medical Center and a painter with A.V. Edmisten.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Grimes McQueen; one son, Chess Morris McQueen and wife, Jill, of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Isabella McQueen of Winston-Salem; one step-daughter, Stephanie Hagler; and one sister, Juanita Mackey, both of Boone; and one brother, Richard Grimes and wife, Shirley, of Lenoir; and also a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Rev. Robert White; his father and mother, Ebb and Molly Grimes McQueen; and one sister, Bertha Horton.
Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Morris Hatton. Burial will follow in the Clarissa Hill Cemetery.

Ellis Eugene “Gene” Thomas
Mr. Ellis Eugene "Gene" Thomas, 73, 497 Harbin Road, Zionville, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born August 1, 1933 in Watauga County, a son of the late William Asa and Mamie McGlamery Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a retired U.S. Army veteran of 20 years, serving both in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Irene Trivette of Winston-Salem, and Jana L. Thomas of Zionville; two brothers, Kenneth Thomas and wife, Phyllis, of Blountville, Tenn., and Billy Dean Thomas of Mountain City; and a very special friend, Betty McGlamery. He is also survived a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Mont H. Thomas; one sister, Margaret Sue Wallace; and one nephew, Gary M. Thomas.
Military graveside rites and burial were conducted Thursday morning, Jan. 11, 2007, at Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Derick Wilson.

Bruce E. McGlamery
Mr. Bruce E. McGlamery, 69, of Trade, Tenn., passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and was born on Dec. 31, 1937 to the late Raymond and Jessie Neatherly McGlamery.
Mr. McGlamery was a machine operator at Film Salvage and was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge # 243 F&AM where he served as Worshipful Master for two years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Trade United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Virgie Arnold McGlamery; two sons, Jeff McGlamery of Trade and Lawrence McGlamery and wife, Carolene, of Butler, Tenn.; four sisters, Emily Shatley, Reba Hartzog and husband, Wayne, and Betty Trivette, all of Lenoir, and Annette Bentley and special brother-in-law, James Revis, of Statesville; a brother, Hayden McGlamery of Trade; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray McGlamery.
Services were conducted Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral with the Rev. Larry Rye, Jim Hutchinson, Minister, and the Rev. Ray Branch officiating.
Pallbearers were Tracy Atwood, Mark Wallace, Mike May, Blaine Snyder, Dick Grayson, and Bill Wallace. Honorary pallbearers were members of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge, Dr. John Whitlock and Alf Wilson, Bill Moore, Terry and Jerry Jordan, Todd Grayson, and employees of Film Salvage Co.
A Masonic Service was conducted immediately following the service by the Taylorville Masonic Lodge # 243 F&AM. The committal service and interment was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Trade United Methodist Church Cemetery. Military Rites were conducted by Johnson County Honor Guard.

Jean Phillips
Miss Jean Phillips, 74, of 242 South Pine Run Road, Boone, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2007, at her residence.
She was born July 8, 1932 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late S.E. “Dock” and Beulah Greer Phillips.
Miss Phillips was a retired beautician for McGuire’s Beauty Shop and a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Conley Phillips and wife, Mary, of Boone; three nephews, Claude Ellis Phillips, Jr. and wife, Laurie, of Deep Gap, Randy Phillips and wife, Crystal, and Dale Phillips and wife, Linda Marie, all of Etowah, N.C.; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn Phillips, of Deep Gap.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude Ellis Phillips, Sr., and James Arthur Phillips; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie Cook Phillips.

Russell Boyd Richards
Mr. Russell Boyd Richards, 85, of N.C. Hwy. 194 North, Boone, died Sunday night, Jan. 7, 2006 at home.
He was born in Watauga County, Nov. 2, 1921, a son of the late General Lee and Bessie Pearl Lawrence Richards.
Mr. Richards was a member of Howard’s Creek Baptist Church, and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a retired sawmill worker.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Bunnie Hodges Richards; three daughters, Anna Bell Main of Boone, Jeanette Combs of Sugar Grove, and Polly Richards and friend, Jay, of Boone; two sons, Jimmy Richards and wife, Doris, of Boone, and Junior Richards and wife, Linda, of Vilas; a special granddaughter, Marie Earp, of Valle Crucis; three sisters, Suma Jones of Boone, Ruby Jones and husband, Chester, of Boone, and Bernice Grice and husband, James, of Concord; two brothers, Stanford Richards of Lynchburg, Va., and Kenneth Richards of Deep Gap; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Ernest Pardue; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Richards; a son-in-law, Darrell Combs; one sister, Gladys Brown Cheek; two brothers, Johnny Richards and R.L. Richards; and two infant brothers, Bobby Len and James Odell Richards.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Dan Church and the Rev. Scott Courtney. The body will lie in state at the chapel from 1-2 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Carol P. Stone
Mrs. Carol P. Stone, 69, of Longwood, Fla., passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007.
She was born Jan. 8, 1937, in Winter Park, Fla. 
Mrs. Stone was a member on the board of SWOP. She was also a longtime member with Rolling Hills Golf Club in Longwood, Fla. and Hound Ears Country Club in Boone, N.C.
Survivors include her sons, Scott, Roger and Todd.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, Jan. 10, from 5-8 p.m. at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home East Altamonte Chapel. A Rosary Service will be at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Jan. 11, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Palm Cemetery in Winter Park, Fla.

George Thomas Coffey
Mr. George Thomas Coffey, 89, of Laytown Road, Lenoir, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007.
He was born August 29, 1917 in Caldwell County, to the late Will and Bessie Townsend Coffey.
Mr. Coffey was a self-employed farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sons, Ray Coffey of Banner Elk, Charles Coffey, Clarence Coffey and Donald Coffey, all of Lenoir; a daughter, Carrie Townsend of Lenoir; three brothers, John Coffey, Abe Coffey and Jack Coffey, all of Boone; a sister, Coralee Greer of Lenoir; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cordie Viola Coffey; three sisters, Ruth Coffey, Lula Church and Nancy Coffey; a brother, Joe Coffey; two grandsons, Paul Joseph Townsend and Jerry Wayne Coffey; and one great-grandson, Kenneth Townsend.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Laytown Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ed Greene. Interment followed at Laytown Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Billy Townsend, Chris Coffey, Will Coffey, Joel Coffey, William Coffey, Tony Hudson, and Corey Coffey.
Honorary pallbearer was Clint Coffey.

Claty Baird Hartley
Mrs. Claty Baird Hartley, 98, of 821 Brown's Chapel Road, Boone, died Saturday morning, Jan. 6, 2007, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 20, 1908 in Jip, Okla., a daughter of the late Alex and Bertha Hubbard Baird. She was raised in the Matney Community, and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Hartley was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Moretz and husband, Allie, of Miller's Creek, and Mary Frances Adams and husband, Perry, of Vilas; one son, Danny Hartley and wife, Janice, of Deep Gap; two sisters, Pheobe Smith of Valdese, and Lucy Parlier of Elizabethton, Tenn.; five granddaughters, Margaret Watson and husband, Teddy, of Fleetwood, Becky Deal and husband, Blake, of Miller's Creek, Diane Ellis and husband, Jeffery, of Wilkesboro, Candace Hartley of Anchorage, Alaska, and Melissa Whitley and husband, Chris, of Prospect, S.C.; three grandsons, Richard Moretz of Wilkesboro, Chad Hartley of Raleigh, and Perry Adams, Jr. of Vilas; three great-granddaughters, Tiffany Shumate and husband, Jason, of Hickory, Dasheria Moretz of Wilkesboro, and Ashlyn Whitley of Prospect, S.C., and two great-grandsons, Barrett Deal of Miller's Creek, and Alex Moretz of Wilkesboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Burl Hartley; two sons, Richard and Harold Hartley; one daughter, Doris Parlier; two brothers, Lewis and Lester Baird; and three sisters, Lois Bolick, Otha Wilson, and Mary Greer; a daughter-in-law, Dot Hartley; and one son-in-law, James Parlier.
Services will be conducted Monday morning, Jan. 8, 2007, at 11:00 o'clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Pastor Allan Blume and the Rev. Bud Russell. Burial will follow in the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Kathleen Huffman Lowman
Mrs. Kathleen Huffman Lowman, 67, of Pilot Ridge Road, Linville, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, unexpectedly in an auto accident.
She was born March 15, 1939 in Catawaba County, a daughter of Geneva Shuford Huffman and the late Roy E. Huffman.
Mrs. Lowman was a member of the American Rifle Association and worked in the dietary department at Glenbridge.
She is survived by her husband, Harry Levi Lowman; two daughters, Debbie Martin and husband, Eddy, of Vale, and Neoma Caldwell and husband, Rocky, of Clermont, Fla.; one son, Harry Luther Lowman of Newland; two granddaughters, Cassandra Blair of Maiden and Jessica Caldwell of Claremont; two grandsons, Rex and Joseph Caldwell, both of Clermont, Fla.; her mother, Geneva Huffman of Vale; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy Keller and husband, Sam, of Vale, Judy Prystup and husband, Eddie, Vivian Powell and husband, Larry, both of Hickory, and Vickie Fox and husband, Leslie, of Taylorsville; six brothers and two sisters-in-law, Charles Elmer Huffman of Hildebran, Jimmy Darrell Huffman of Vale, Carl Daniel Huffman of Hickory, Terry Wayne Huffman and wife, Linda, of Icard, Johnny Lee Huffman of Hickory, and Dennis Huffman and wife, Diane, of Vale. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy E. Huffman; an infant daughter; and two sisters, Shirley VanHorn and Linda Huffman.
Services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Kanupp officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.

James Dale Slaney
Mr. James Dale Slaney of Mars Hill, N.C., passed away Dec. 31, 2006, after a determined struggle against cancer. 
He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and York, Pa. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, a proud graduate of Duke University, class of ‘50, and a successful and well traveled business man with a passion for aviation and vintage aircraft.
His graciousness towards others and courage while fighting his disease will always be an inspiration to his survivors which include his loving wife Dreama Slaney; her children Suzie DelSarto, Amber DelSarto and Tony DelSarto; brother, Joseph Thomas Slaney, Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter, Lynn Slaney-Silguero and son-in-law, Paul Silguero, of Dallas, Texas; sons Jonathan, of Greenville, N.C., and Thomas J. Slaney and daughter-in-law, Elsa Slaney, of Laredo, Texas; and grandsons, Brandon and Michael Slaney of York, Pa., son Scott Slaney; daughter in-law, Lisa Slaney and grandson, Josef, of Houston, Texas.
Services for Mr. Slaney will be attended by the immediate family. Cremation was provided by Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Mars Hill, N.C.

Alice Taylor Thomas
Mrs. Alice Taylor Thomas passed away at her home at the Rogue Valley Manor on Jan. 1, 2007.
She was born April 4, 1912, and was a native of Watauga County, where she graduated from Appalachian College (Appalachian State University) in Boone. Following her graduation, she taught school in North Carolina until her marriage to Col. Richard G. Thomas.
The Thomas’s were very interested in helping under privileged boys and girls to obtain an education and established scholarships at North Carolina State University and Appalachian State University. They enjoyed receiving letters of appreciation from the recipients of these scholarships.
The Thomas’s lived in Huntsville, Ala., Ft. Bliss, Texas and Washington, D.C. in conjunction with Col. Thomas’ military service. Upon Col. Thomas’ retirement, they moved to Carmel, Calif. and later to Saratoga, Calif. They moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Oregon in 1984.
The Thomas’s had one son, Richard Alan Thomas, who died on Jan. 9, 1970 while serving in the Special Forces in Vietnam.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews. She is lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Alice Thomas’ memory to any organization that serves children.
