ASU to celebrate victory
A public celebration commemorating Appalachian State’s second-straight NCAA Division I Football national championship is set for Jan. 13 at the Holmes Center. The celebration will take place in conjunction with Appalachian’s basketball doubleheader, as the ASU women take on UNC Greensboro at 1 p.m. and the Mountaineer men square off versus Elon at 3:30 p.m.

Big fourth quarter lifts Pioneers to win
MARION — Watauga boys basketball coach Rob Sanders saw Seth Moore play the type of fourth quarter he wants the 6-foot-6 center to play the entire game. Moore scored 12 of his team high 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead a Watauga 72-71 comeback victory over McDowell Tuesday night. Moore took the game over by hitting key shot after key shot to keep the Pioneers close enough to make a final push in the game’s final 1:23.

WHS crushes Titans
Watauga’s wrestling team rolled to a 53-24 victory over McDowell Tuesday at Lentz-Eggers Gym. The Pioneers benefitted from pinfall victories from Travis Coffey at 130 pounds and from Savva Kostis at 145 pounds. Ben Chappell also won by pinfall at 160 pounds. Coffey pinned Aaron Patrick and Kostis pinned Adam Lofton. Chappell pinned Jacob Hensley.

Mountaineers rally past VCU
RICHMOND, Va. — Appalachian State erased a 17-point deficit to earn its 11th win of the season with a gutsy 73-70 victory at Virginia Commonwealth Saturday night. Donte Minter led ASU’s comeback efforts with 19 second-half points, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds as Appalachian State (11-3) became just the third team in the last two years to leave the Siegel Center with a victory.

Breitenstein named N.C. All-State DB
It seems the rest of the state, at least the media, has learned that Watauga’s football team has some talent. Watauga junior Eric Breitenstein was named to the Associated Press’ All-State team over the weekend as a defensive back. In addition, Pioneers coach Adrian Snow finished second in the Coach of the Year balloting.

Watauga rally falls short
Watauga already knows it can compete in the Northwestern 4-A Conference after the Pioneers knocked off Freedom in December. They took two games last week to stay sharp for the rest of the NWC season, which began at McDowell Tuesday.

Pioneers settle for second
The Watauga girls rolled past West Stokes to make it to the finals of the Pioneer Invitational last week, but were unable to overcome a staunch T.C. Roberson defense in the championship game.
