Watauga had three student-athletes win player of the year honors in their respective sports during the Northwestern 4-A Conference fall season. Eric Breitenstein was the Northwestern 4-A Conference Offensive Player of the Year in football, while Kelly Cherry-Leigh was the Player of the Year in volleyball. Brianna Fleming was Player of the Year in women’s tennis.

VCU up next for traveling Mountaineers
Appalachian State beat Virginia, Central Florida and Vanderbilt in the San Juan Shootout and in the process, won the tournament. Big deal. At least that’s the Mountaineers’ attitude when they take on Virginia Commonwealth Saturday in Richmond, Va. Appalachian State (10-3), winners of eight of its last nine games, takes on a VCU team that is 9-2 and playing good basketball this time of year. The Rams, who like to push the ball up the floor, are scoring 74 points per game and giving up just 59.

Since they won the San Juan Shootout, Appalachian State has played exactly one game. The Mountaineers went to Virginia Commonwealth last Saturday and take on Southern Conference rival Chattanooga this Saturday in Tennessee.

Big-time players made championship plays in our county during 2006. Watauga County was very fortunate to have several teams and individuals win championships both locally, on the state level and nationally.

ASU wins San Juan Shootout
GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico — Behind a breakout performance from Donte Minter, Appalachian State claimed the 2006 San Juan Shootout championship with an 87-79 overtime victory against Vanderbilt last Thursday at Mario Morales Coliseum.

WEST JEFFERSON — For a half, Watauga and Ashe County went after each other like two prize fighters in the center of a ring. Then Ashe County started landing knockout punches and ran away for a 76-61 victory Thursday night.

ASU women put clamps on VCU 79-68
Whitney Tossie had a night to remember last Thursday in leading Appalachian State to a 79-68 win over Virginia Commonwealth at the Holmes Center. The Mountaineers (7-5) applied an unyielding fullcourt press that frustrated the VCU guards all game. The pressure forced the Rams into 28 turnovers that resulted in 26 Appalachian points.
