In memory of President Gerald Ford

Flags throughout Watauga County were at half-staff this week following the death of former President Gerald Ford at age 93 on Tuesday.  Ford became president of the United States after the Watergate scandal forced Richard Nixon from office in 1974. Though he served as president for only 29 months, Ford is now widely credited with restoring public faith in the office of the president after the scandals of the Nixon years. Ford is also no stranger to the High Country. He visited the Spruce Pine area in 1976 and also that year was responsible for signing legislation to include the New River as part of the National Wild and Scenic River system. The river is purported to be the oldest in the United States and second oldest in the world. The New River has its origins near the towns of Boone and Blowing Rock. Efforts to protect the New River began in 1965, when the Appalachian Power Company applied for a license to dam the river. Citizens' groups as well as state and federal agencies opposed to the plan united to protect this historic and scenic area. Photo by Marie Freeman

The joy of victory and the excitement of political transition were also mixed with a measure of sadness as the face behind the famous profile of Grandfather Mountain passed into North Carolina history. Here’s a sampling of the top news stories of the year.

Watauga Review 2006: A time of elections, malls, tags and titles

Both change and stability were in the wind (along with new wind-power initiatives) during the last half of 2006 in Watauga County. New towers were raised at Boone Mall while several incumbents were toppled in the November general election. County drivers played tag with the state — and won. All App State fans wanted for Christmas were their two national titles — and they got their wish. In all, 2006 held excitement for people of all political preferences and sport allegiance. Here’s a look back from August through December.

Tree growers enjoy season

The Christmas decorations are still hanging in most households, but local tree growers don’t get to rest on their laurels — or fir boughs — even after a successful season. Doug Clawson, owner of Clawson’s Choose and Cut in Meat Camp, said his business was up 17 percent this year.
