You know Trey Elder, Hans Batichon, Trey Hennessee, Julian Rauch and James Hill. They are the familiar faces of the Appalachian State offense. They are the ones whose names usually make the paper when the Mountaineers are in the process of scoring 35.7 points per game, their average this season.

Special teams key to ASU’s success

It’s the part of football that is taken for granted, until something goes wrong. Then people notice special teams.  There has been very little that has gone wrong with Appalachian State’s special teams this year. The Mountaineers’ kicking game has been solid this season, particularly in the playoffs, where Appalachian State has rolled through three speed bumps to the national championship game this Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn.

UMass running back finds home up north

BOSTON (AP) — Several colleges liked Steve Baylark in his last year at Apopka High School in Florida. They wanted him in their backfield — as a fullback. Baylark had other ideas. He wanted to avoid big defenders instead of block them so interest among those schools waned. Then Massachusetts, a university he knew nothing about, surprised him. They wanted him as a running back and Baylark headed north.

ASU keeps winning at home

Appalachian State ran its home winning streak to 27 games with its 49-24 victory over Youngstown State Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. That win meant that the senior class, minus one player, went undefeated in home games at Kidd Brewer. The only player who did not win every home game he played in was tight end Daniel Bettis, who is a fifth-year senior. He was on the team that lost 14-13 to Maine in the second round of the playoffs in 2002.
