Pioneers host West Charlotte in Western finals
Watauga’s football team isn’t so naive that it doesn’t know what’s at stake at Jack Groce Stadium Friday night. They know that if they beat West Charlotte in the Western Regional final, they’ll be playing for a 4-A state championship the following week in Durham.
They also know that their 24-23 win over A.C. Reynolds was the Pioneers’ biggest victory in over 20 years.

Bobcats no easy mark for ASU
It’s true that Appalachian State has won 24 straight games at Kidd Brewer Stadium. It’s also likely true that Montana State isn’t so worried about that fact. Montana State, winners of seven out of its last eight games, invades The Rock for a showdown with the Mountaineers in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m. The Bobcats (8-4) have already tasted victory over a Southern Conference team, having pounded Furman 31-14 last weekend in Bozeman, Mont.

Wilkes stuns WHS
WILKESBORO — Though other things will be remembered in Watauga’s 58-56 heartbreaking loss to Wilkes Central, the one factor that hurt the Pioneers the most was foul shooting. Watauga hit just 10-of-21 of its free throws, which proved to be fatal in the long run. It also didn’t help that Wilkes Central hit 21-of-34 from the foul line or that the Eagles hit five 3-point shots.

A story in Monday’s Watauga Democrat incorrectly listed the day that Watauga’s boys and girls varsity basketball games against West Caldwell would be played. The games have been moved to Dec. 6. They were to be played this Friday, but were moved because Watauga’s state 4-A football playoff game against West Charlotte is also Friday night at Jack Groce Stadium.

ASHEVILLE — It took only about one, maybe two seconds, to leave an impression on me. Maybe it was just my imagination, running away with me. But out of everything that happened in Watauga’s 24-23 victory over A.C. Reynolds Friday night, it was what I didn’t hear that stood out for me.
