The town of Boone’s Web site is overflowing with new information on water conservation. As part of the town’s Every Drop Counts campaign, information on conservation techniques for residential and commercial use has recently been posted.

Road plans stay the course
The state Transportation Improvement Plan will likely change little for next year, with funding concerns continuing to delay road projects. The state Board of Transportation will be adopting a final TIP this winter, though a draft has been making the rounds for a series of public hearings, with one held recently in Wilkes County. Arnold Lakey, DOT board member representing the seven counties, including Watauga, in Division 11, said he foresaw no more amendments to the proposed document.

L.D. Hagaman talks about new job as sheriff
It took 10 months of campaigning, one day to complete the vote, and two weeks to sort it all out, but newly certified sheriff-elect Len Hagaman said he’s already shrugged off a post-election delay and will be ready to take over the county’s largest law-enforcement agency Dec. 4.

Mapping a trail and gardening beer
The town of Boone will work with Appalachian State University to create a broad map of trails in Boone. At November’s regular Boone Town Council meeting, the town’s greenway committee requested permission from the council to allow appropriate staff to work with university staff to create a map that would overlap the town’s greenway system with adjoining trails on university property.

Discussion on mixed-use zoning districts brought mixed reviews from the Boone Town Council. Though the matter was presented as an action item for November’s regular council meeting, council members opted not to vote on it, instead analyzing draft language for three mixed-use districts.

Local quartet launches new development
A gated community under development near Todd is what four local businessmen are calling “a piece of heaven on earth.” Accountant Larry Hughes, entrepreneur Kenneth Wilcox, businessman Joe Miller and developer Mark Harrill are developing Elk Creek Mountain, a 284-acre gated community that will offer 97 home sites, ranging in size from two to 10 acres.

Child care service in Sugar Grove
The Sugar Grove Developmental Day School has developed not only a number of children, but its foundation as a service for the families of western Watauga County. The day school is one of only two child-care centers in the county that accepts infants, and has a long waiting list for families wanting to use the services, according to the organization’s treasurer, Karen James.

Playoff fever
Watauga High School’s Pioneers have reached the state 4-A Western Regional Final. They will host West Charlotte in Boone on Friday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Jack Groce stadium on the WHS campus. The game will be broadcast over WJZS – FM, 100.7. The shuttle that has run for other Watauga football games will be available again Friday night for the Pioneers’ playoff game with West Charlotte. Fans can catch the shuttle at the Boone Mall Parking lot beginning at 6 p.m. Return trips to the mall start at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Tickets for Friday’s game are $6 if purchased before Friday and $7 at the gate. Presale tickets are available at Watauga High School Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10 a.m.-noon.

Appalachian State University, rolling in the FCS playoffs, will host Montana State this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium on the ASU campus. The game will be on ESPN 2. Hagaman certified as sheriff
A vote recount Wednesday confirmed local results with little change, though some statewide races will have to wait until Tuesday as the state elections board reviews some voting issues, including a hand count of ballots requested by one congressional candidate.
