Lewis Bynum Anderson
Mr. Lewis Bynum Anderson, 87, of Hodges Gap Road, Boone, died Monday morning, Nov. 20, 2006 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born July 28, 1919 in Watauga County, a son of the late Roy J. and Rebecca Earp Anderson.
Mr. Anderson was a retired lineman for Blue Ridge Electric, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Vines Anderson; two daughters, Jane Ann Hodges and husband, Bobby, and Kay Anderson; and one son, Lewis Hal Anderson and wife, Gail, all of Boone; four grandchildren; Rev. Greg Anderson and wife, Melanie, of Charlottesville, Va., Michael Hodges of Monroe, Cheryl Dunn and husband, Bobby,of Lady Smith, Va., Michelle Swann and husband, Julian, of Atlanta, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren, Callie and Cody Lewis Dunn, Gracie Hodges, Abigail and Amelia Anderson, Judge Lewis Swann and Emma Swann; and a special nephew, Larry Tester of Sugar Grove; one sister, Lettie McClung of Mauldin, Mass.; and a number of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Lewis Hal Anderson, Jr.; one great-grandson, Cory Dunn; and two sisters, Bertha Coffey and Edith Tester.
Services will be conducted Friday morning at 11 o’clock at Oak Grove Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 until 11 o’clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Greg Anderson. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lewis Hal Anderson, Jr. Scholarship Fund, in care of Oak Grove Baptist Church, 306 Oak Grove Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Leigh Anne Cable
Miss Leigh Anne Cable, 18, of Rush Branch Road, Sugar Grove, died Sunday morning, Nov. 19, 2006, at her home.
She was born Feb. 24, 1988 in Watauga County, to Sanford and Margaret Main Cable.
Miss Cable was a life long member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
A graduate of the Watauga High School class of 2006, she was an active member of the Health Occupations Students of America, serving as the club historian; and a member of the Beta Club and the National Honor Society. She was a freshman at Appalachian State University.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandparents, Frank and Betty Matheson Cable of Sugar Grove. A number of aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Earl and Annie Main.
Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Antioch Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Carl Wilson. Burial followed in the Cable-Matheson Cemetery.
The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Harvey J. Canter
Mr. Harvey J. Canter, 74, of 4992 Meat Camp Road, Todd, died Monday morning, Nov. 20, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born May 15, 1932 in Watauga County, a son of the late Frank and Lillie Icenhour Canter.
Mr. Canter was a retired sawmill operator.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline Icenhour Canter; five daughters, Dovie Evans and husband, Ronnie, Katherine Potter, Lisa Johnson and husband, Van, all of Todd; Loretta Guy and husband, Terry, of Sugar Grove, and Gail Evans of Butler, Tenn.; two sons, Harold Canter of Todd, and Thomas Canter and wife, Michelle, of Boone; two sisters, Dorothy Miller and husband, George, of Hickory, and Viola Coffey of Yadkinville. Twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Johnny Harvey Canter; five brothers, Austin, Gurney, Horton, Odell, and Dennis Canter; three half-brothers, Dave Icenhour, Wade Canter, and Ralph Canter; two half-sisters, Hazel and Berthie Miller; one daughter-in-law, Martha Canter; and one grandson-in-law, David Burchette.
Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Nov. 22, 2006, at Elk Knob Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Danner, the Rev. Eric Cornett, and the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial followed in the Mains Cemetery.

Mary Lea White Gragg
Mrs. Mary Lea White Gragg, 92, of Poplar Grove Road, Boone, wife of the late Jack Gragg, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
She was born June 7, 1914 in Iredell County, a daughter of the late Franklin Alexander and Collis Templeton White.
Mrs. Gragg attended Appalachian State Teachers College and taught fourth grade at Union Grove School in Iredell County. She was manager of Newton’s Department Store in Boone and a teller at Watauga Savings and Loan. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Boone.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Frank Poe and husband, Robert, of Boone; two sons, Robert J. Gragg and wife, Judy, of Boone, and W. Larry Gragg and wife, Roslyn, of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Anna Robbins of Winston-Salem, and Edna Zepp of Harmony; and one sister-in-law, Gladys Gragg of Boone. Seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Jack A. Gragg; one sister, Ethel Boots; and four brothers, Taft, Flake, Delmer, and Donnie White.
Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22, 2006, at 3 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Wayne Brown officiating. Entombment followed in the Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.

Bina Storie Teague
Mrs. Bina Storie Teague, 97, of 460 Shady Grove Drive, Boone, died Sunday morning, Nov. 19, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 19, 1909 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Roby Luther and Eliza Hampton Storie.
Mrs. Teague was a homemaker and a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Lois Hayes, Shirley Bentley and husband, Joe, and Kay Sisell, all of Boone; Evelyn Mast and husband, Jim, of Charleston, S.C., Eloise Brown and husband, Herbert, and Clara Gizinski and husband, Richard, all of Winston-Salem; two sons, Wayne Teague and wife, Mary, of Sacramento, Calif. and Jim Teague and wife, Norma, of Boone; two brothers, Stanley Storie and wife, Mina Jo, of Boone, and Wade Storie and wife, Inez, of Vilas; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Teague Aldridge of Boone, Mrs. Pearl Teague of Johnson City, Tenn. and Mrs. Mary Helen Edmisten of Newport Richey, Fla.; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bynum Dell Teague; one daughter, Margaret Terket; a son-in-law, Raymond C. Hayes; two brothers, Romie and Stanford Storie; three sisters, Verlee Storie Teague, Julie Storie Reed and infant Mamie Bell Storie.
Services were conducted Wednesday morning, Nov. 22, 2006, at 11 a.m., at Rutherwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Lawrence and the Rev. Herbert McCoy officiating. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Betty Currie Tilley
Mrs. Betty Currie Tilley, 75, of Black Mountain, N.C., entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006 at Highland Farms Retirement Center.
She was born in Nashville, Tenn. on June 6, 1931, and was the wife of the late Royale Tilley, and was the daughter of the late Dr. A. L. and Eloise Martin Currie.
Mrs. Tilley graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1953, obtaining her MA from Peabody College in 1970. She worked as a Children's Librarian at the R. Brown McAllister Elementary School in Concord from 1970 until 1978. She owned the Blue Ridge Blue Berry Farm in Banner Elk from 1978 until 1986, moving to Montreat in 1986 and remained there until 2001. In 2001 she became a resident at Highland Farms and remained there until her death.
She is survived by her sons; Royale (Buck) Tilley, Jr. , of Arusha, Tanzania; Harold Tilley, of Boone; and various nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, William (Bill) Currie.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006 at Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Rumholt officiating.

Imogene Payne Williams
Mrs. Imogene Payne Williams, 76, of Florence, S.C., widow of Marion Henry "M.H." Williams, Jr., died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, in a local hospital.
She was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Watauga County, N.C., to the late Claude D. and Eva Greene Payne.
Mrs. Williams was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church. She had been a Hostess at Florence Country Club. She loved gardening and cooking.
Among her survivors are a daughter, Susan (Bo) McMillan of Mullins; sons, Rampey Williams and Randell Williams and wife, Jenny, both of Florence, S.C., Clay (Gregg) Williams of Bishopville, Chris Williams and wife, Vicki, of Conway, S.C.; sisters, Ruth Hollar, and husband, Fred, of Winston-Salem, Grace Ray of Boone, N.C. and Mary Farmer and husband, Art, of Lenoir, N.C.; brothers, C. D. Payne, Jr., and wife, Thelma, Dan Payne and wife, Joann, and Paul Payne and wife, Judy, all of Boone, N.C.; grandchildren, Jason, Randall, Daniel, Emily, Christina and Jennifer Grace; and great-grandchildren, Max, John Randall, Luke, Wyatt, Elise, and Mary Ella.
She was predeceased by sisters, Shirley Grimstead, Claudia Clawson and Dorothy Payne; and brothers, Lawrence Payne and Luther Payne.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday morning, November 24, 2006, in Mt. Hope Mausoleum. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Michael Gay. Family members will receive friends from 10:00-10:45, prior to the service, at the mausoleum.

David Yoder
Mr. David Yoder, 72, of Boone, died Sunday morning, Nov. 19, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born March 30, 1934, in Sedgwick County, Kansas.
Mr. Yoder was retired President and C.E.O. of Computer Products, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Survivors include one son, Michael Yoder and wife, Christina, of Concord; one daughter, Pamela Yoder of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; and one grandson, William Yoder of Concord.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Beatrice Viola Osborne Arnold
Mrs. Beatrice Viola Osborne Arnold, 82, of West Jefferson, formerly of Beaver Creek and Rich Hill communities, died Friday morning, Nov. 17, 2006 at Margate Health & Rehab Center.
She was born in Ashe County on August 21, 1924 to the late Joel Emanuel Osborne and Pearl Pennington Osborne. S
Mrs. Arnold was a homemaker. She was a member of Warrensville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by five children, Christena Hoosier and husband, Darrell, of Dobson, N.C., Dennis Arnold and wife, Maxine, of Hudson, N.C., Leona Witherspoon and husband, Warren, of Jefferson, Larry Arnold and wife, Jessie, of Lenoir, N.C. and Brenda Powers and husband, Jerry, of Laurel Springs; two brothers, Dexter Osborne and wife, Minnie, of Lansing and Dean Osborne and wife, Nella Dean, of Statesville, N.C.; two sisters, Margaret Osborne and husband, Rottis, of Crumpler and Deanna Cox and husband, Fred, of Mountain City, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Arnold.

Valerie Proffitt Buice
Mrs. Valerie Proffitt Buice, 60, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at her home after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 16, 1946, in Greenville, S.C., to Moody Graham Proffitt, Jr. and Vallie Kelley Proffitt.
Mrs. Buice was a 1965 graduate of Greenville High School and received bachelor’s degrees from the University of South Carolina and Appalachian State University in Boone, where she was the office manager of the Department of Speech & Hearing. She was retired from Sun Chemical Corp. in Winston-Salem, where she was office administrator. Mrs. Buice was a member of Center United Methodist Church in Welcome.
She will be remembered for her caring nature, her warmth, her spirit and her spunk. She was the ultimate “people person.” She loved to travel and especially enjoyed many special times at the beach before her health declined. Her family always came first, and she really enjoyed spoiling her two grandchildren, who were referred to as her “little bears.” She also cherished her many friends, among them a “best friend” and caregiver during her final months, Donna Sanflippo.
Surviving are her loving and devoted husband, Jim Buice, of the home; two daughters, Kelley Ford and husband, Tim, of Winston-Salem, and Frances Clawson,of Greensboro; one brother, Moody Graham Proffitt III and wife, Rhoda, of Greenville; two sisters, Andrea Proffitt League and husband, Jimmy, of Greenville, and Frances Proffitt Carter and husband, Steve, of Greenville; two grandchildren, Heather Ford and Brittany Ford, both of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; and a brother, Charles Kelley Proffitt.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Clay Morgan and the Rev. Bob McCaskill officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A burial service and visitation with the family will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Woodlawn Remembrance Chapel and Mausoleum in Greenville, S.C.

Mary Craig Ford
Mrs. Mary Craig Ford, 92, of 296 Heather Ridge Lane, Blowing Rock, died Sunday morning, Nov. 19, 206, at her home.
Mrs. Ford was born May 24, 1914, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late William and Cora Estes Craig. She attended Silver Lake School in Blowing Rock and was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Fork Baptist Church.
Mrs. Ford is survived by one son, Earl Ford, and wife, Martina, of Blowing Rock; a daughter-in-law, June Ford, of Hudson; two grandsons, Ricky Ford and wife, Jo Carol, of Troutman, and Eric Ford and wife, Dena, of Boone; one granddaughter, Aundrea Potter and husband, Kevin, of Trade, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren, Jacodie Ford, Roger Potter, Trowa Potter, Curtis Potter, Jeremiah Ford and Kayla Ford; one sister, Ruby Tipton, and one brother, Lank Craig, both of Blowing Rock.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Francis Marion Ford, a son, Paul Ford, seven brothers, Butler, Hazen, Adam, Bill, Frank, and Craig and two infant and three sisters Elsie Mae Craig and Lee Holder and an infant.
Services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1 until 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Darrell Miller. Burial will follow in the Craig Family Cemetery in Blowing Rock.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 until 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service prior to the service.

Mary Nelle King Hayes
Mrs. Mary Nelle King Hayes, 62, of West Jefferson, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 15, 2006 at her residence.
She was born in Durham County on Saturday, May 6, 1944 to the late Hubert Howell King and Edith Yates King.
Mrs. Hayes worked as a Bookkeeper.
Survivors include her husband, Charlie Wheeler Hayes; a son, Neal Hayes and wife, Jana, of Wilkesboro; her mother, Edith King, of West Jefferson; and two grandchildren, Brian Hayes and Blake Hayes, both of Wilkesboro.
Services were held on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Burial followed in the Old Fields Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ellen Faye Norris
Mrs. Ellen Faye Houck Norris, 90, of 565 Kirby Branch Road, Zionville, died Friday morning at Life Care Center in Banner Elk.
Mrs. Norris was born Aug. 12, 1916 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Jeff and Alice Norris Houck. She was a member of Union Baptist Church.
Mrs. Norris is survived by three daughters, Joyce Colvard of Clemmons and Geneva Stevens and husband, William, and Cindy Eller and husband, Jim, all of Zionville; two sons, Jimmy Norris of Zionville and Gary Norris and wife, Marisa, of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Norris of Pfafftown; and a sister-in-law, Louise Houck of Fleetwood.
She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bethelview United Methodist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Allen Marsh. Burial was in the Norris Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery.

Gladys Whitten Sharp
Gladys Whitten Sharp, 90, of 1009 Line St., N.E., Decatur, Ala., died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Riverside Senior Living in Decatur.
Mrs. Sharp was born Sept. 2, 1916 in Morgan County, Ala., to the late Archie and Maudie Allen Whitten. She was a lifelong member of Center Springs United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker, seamstress, an active member of United Methodist Women, a Sunday school teacher, Bible scholar and a preparer of food for others in time of need. She was also a prayer warrior, a loving wife, mother, gardener, poll worker and gracious hostess.
She is survived by a son, Bobby H. Sharp and wife, Sharon, of Boone; two daughters, Wylodine Turney of Decatur, Ala., and Drucilla Gambrell and husband, Edward, of Florence, Ala.; a sister, Opal Stephenson of Sebring, Fla.; six grandchildren, Bonita Nolen, Donnis Toland, Dale Turney, Susan Sharer, Phillip Gambrell and Lindley Curtis; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Huel D. Sharp.
Services will be conducted Monday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. at Center Springs United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Steve Pilkington and Asa Boozer. Interment will be at Center Springs Cemetery in Somerville, Ala.
Pallbearers will be Charles Whitten, Ronald Whitten, Kenneth Whitten, Dale Turney, Philip Gambrell, Chuck Nolen, David Toland and Mark Curtis.
