Red Cross will send videos to soldiers
Family and friends of overseas, active-duty military personnel will gather to put faces with their well wishes Sunday. The American Red Cross is hosting a Video Connect program, in which loved ones of service members can send a video message directly to a soldier. The Red Cross chapter in Charlotte arranged the event, taking place Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Boone.

Dog returned to owner after theft in Blowing Rock
A South Carolina woman, whose dog and car disappeared two weeks ago from a Blowing Rock gas station, has been reunited with her stolen bloodhound and her car.

Welding is hot, hot, hot
It’s a blistering time to be a skilled welder. “It is a hot job and pays good money,” Watauga High School senior Dirk Wilson said as he and seven of his classmates in the welding II class waited for David Reemes, an N.C. welding-certification inspector, to arrive on campus to administer a 3G welding test — an rigorous exam that will determine whether or not students can get a job in the real world.

Council members release steep-slope comparisons
It’s been more than a month since the Boone Town Council adopted regulations for steep slope development and view-shed preservation amid a landslide of controversy. The council’s actions have been called brave by some and ludicrous by others. Council members Bunk Spann and Lynne Mason recently released a report they say separates fact and fiction.

Ringing in the season
Volunteer decorator Lauren Tierney adjusts a wreath in a window at the Jones House Community and Cultural Center in downtown Boone. The Jones House will re-open Nov. 24 with decorations in “every nook and cranny from head to toe,” Watauga Arts Council executive director Cherry Johnson said. Relay For Life places second in U.S.
Falling short of first place for the first time in six years for its population group in the nation, Watauga County’s Relay For Life raised $286,553.19 during 2006.

Planners float away from balloon proposal
The Boone Area Planning Commission deflated a text amendment to regulate the commercial use of balloons. its regular meeting Monday, the commission addressed zoning cases from last week’s quarterly public hearing, including a Boone Town Council-initiated zoning text amendment that would modify the Unified Development Ordinance to define balloons and provide guidelines on their use as temporary signs.

The Boone Area Planning Commission recommended approval for four of the items from last week’s quarterly public hearing. The first item was a zoning change request from resident Randolph Johnson. According to a Boone Development Services staff report, Johnson submitted a request to change the zoning classification of 169 Rogers Dr. from R-1 (single-family residential) to CD-R3 (conditional district multi-family residential).

Sheriff’s race: 98-vote margin; Mark Shook will seek recount
A recount in the Watauga County Sheriff’s race is probable after the official canvass scheduled for Nov. 17. Sheriff Mark Shook has confirmed he will request a recount, if eligible, following Friday’s official count of and certification of the ballots. Under state statute, candidates can request a recount if there is a 1-percent or smaller difference between the winning and losing candidates. In unofficial returns, Shook trailed Democratic challenger Len “L.D.” Hagaman by 98 votes, a difference of about a third of a percentage point.

Laurelmor property: Ginn auction draws $150M
Ginn Clubs & Resorts held a property sale that may have broken state records for the value of resort property sold in a single day. The company held the event at Laurelmor, a resort the company is developing in southeastern Watauga County. The property, which encompasses more than 6,200 acres and crosses into Wilkes County, has been under development for nearly two years, and Saturday was the first opportunity for customers to tour the property and sign contracts for some of the lots offered in the first phase of the development.

Woman seeks clues for her stolen car, dog
Jennifer Kembrell had been drawn from her South Carolina home to Watauga County by the memory of a pleasant visit years before. The only urgent tasks on her to-do list on Nov. 5 were rest, relaxation and a few brisk walks with her 125-pound blood hound, Blue. What Kembrell stumbled into instead was Watauga’s uglier side when her car and her dog were snatched away during a two-minute roadside break.
