NCHSAA 4-A playoffs: N. Forsyth at Watauga, 7:30 p.m.

Watauga’s football team has had two weeks to ponder a 9-2 season. Now they are 0-0. The Pioneers turn their attention to North Forsyth, a 5-6 team that finished fourth in the Metro 4-A Conference. The teams play at Jack Groce Stadium Friday night at 7:30.

Pioneers believe in themselves

What a great time it is to watch football in the High Country, especially in Watauga County.  We all expected Appalachian State to at least make the playoffs after winning the 2005 Division I-AA national championship. And the Mountaineers have not disappointed anybody, charging to a 9-1 record, a No. 1 ranking in The Sports Network poll, and with a win over Western Carolina Saturday, a likely No. 1 seed heading into the 2006 playoffs and a chance in playing in the title game Dec. 15.

North Forsyth line presents WHS with challenge

Watauga defensive end Preston Oliver has seen it before. Once again, the 6-foot-0, 190-pound defensive end will face a big offensive line. However, North Forsyth (5-6) brings the biggest offensive line the Pioneers (9-2) have seen this season into Jack Groce Stadium Friday night when the teams clash in the first round of the state 4-A playoffs.

ASU has plenty at stake

Beating Western Carolina would help the No. 1-ranked Appalachian State Mountaineers on several levels.  For starters, the Mountaineers would keep the Old Mountain Jug, the “trophy” given to the winning team of this longtime series. Appalachian State won it last year with its 35-7 victory after losing it to the Catamounts in 2004.

ASU women pull away from Belmont Abbey

Eventually, Appalachian State’s depth was too much for Division II Belmont Abbey to overcome.  The Mountaineers broke open a close first half and pulled away for a sloppy 54-45 victory in an exhibition game at the Holmes Center Tuesday night. Appalachian State faces Central Florida in the Mountaineers’ first game of the season Saturday at the Holmes Center starting at 2 p.m.

JVs earn promotion

So far, the only hazing Logan Smith has received is picking up equipment off the practice field when the Watauga football team is finished. He was ready to get a Mohawk haircut, but then several other players got them to show team unity.

ASU women host exhibition game Tuesday

Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team opens up its 2006-07 preseason hosting Belmont Abbey in an exhibition game, Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Holmes Center.  The Mountaineers return seven players from last season’s 15-13 squad that finished fourth in the Southern Conference at 11-7. Whitney Tossie leads the squad as the lone returning starter after averaging 8.7 points, 4.0 assists and 3.6 rebounds during her sophomore campaign. The guard ranked 16th in the nation with 3.0 steals per contest.

App crushes Citadel

Don’t be shocked if Kevin Richardson starts to pay rent in both of the Kidd Brewer Stadium end zones.  The Appalachian State running back, who scored four touchdowns against Furman a week ago, followed with three more in the Mountaineers’ 42-13 pasting of The Citadel Saturday afternoon.
