Democrats sweep polls
Democrats swept local elections in unofficial returns Tuesday, gaining complete control of county government. With victories by incumbent Billy Ralph Winkler and newcomers John Cooper and Mary Moretz, the Democrats now hold all five seats on the county commission. Winkler, a high school band teacher, and Cooper, the owner of the Mast Store chain, won four-year terms. Moretz, a retired high school history teacher, won a two-year term.

Knob fire launches dangerous season
A fire Sunday on Howard’s Knob brought the fall fire season to a precarious start. Typically, the season starts as early as the middle of October and lasts through mid-December, though weather proved wet enough to postpone the inevitable, when the call came in 2:23 p.m. Sunday.

Big cats and coyotes? What’s in the forest?
Are big cats stalking the night woods of the High Country? A number of people have reported seeing what they believed to be mountain lions, as well as increased numbers of coyotes and bobcats, over the past few years, and though hard evidence remains lacking, the reports are enough to generate interest as hunting season deepens.

Local jobless rate stays low
Watauga County had the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the state for the month of September. The county followed suit with numerous other North Carolina counties by achieving an unemployment rate of less than 5 percent, according to the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina.

Playmakers play well at fest
The Pioneer Playmakers, Watauga High School’s advanced acting class, won several awards at the regional level of the N.C. Theater Conference’s High School Play Festival, held last weekend.

WHS seniors string to the top spot
Four Watauga High School seniors will represent their school in the North Carolina Honors Orchestra Nov. 10-12 at the N.C. School of the Arts in Winston Salem. Cindy Burton, who plays viola, as well as cellists Elisabeth Freeman, Alex Craig, and Emma Dunlap-Grube, were selected from the top students in the Western Region of North Carolina. They will join the top students in the eastern region for this upcoming event, conducted by William LaRue Jones, professor of music and director of orchestral studies at the University of Iowa.

Nov. 7: It’s all over but the voting
Watauga County’s 20 polling precincts will be open for business on Tuesday, with a relatively strong turnout expected despite a midterm election. Three county commission races are on the ballot, as well as a sheriff’s race. Three seats on the board of education are open as well.

Farm-City Banquet blossoms in its 51st harvest
Approximately 250 people were on hand Thursday evening to honor the Farm-City concept in Watauga County. This year’s 51st annual Farm City Banquet was a “zero-waste” event, with the food purchased at “fair market value” from local farmers – including chicken, potatoes and collard greens. It was all prepared by Jackie Brown of Accidental Bakery in Ashe County.

Watauga sheriff’s report:
Oct. 24 — William Clyde Tester, Jr., 43, of 3500 U.S. 421 N, Vilas, was charged with a misdemeanor alleging he possessed or obtained medicines containing pseudoephedrine in excess of legal limits. He was placed under a $500 unsecured bond and scheduled to appear Nov. 27 in District Court.

Animal ordinance hearing scheduled
Local pet owners will get a chance to guide the drafting of a revised animal control ordinance. The Watauga County board of commissioners scheduled a public hearing for Nov. 21, seeking input as the next stage in a process that has been underway for about a year. The latest draft of the ordinance revision is posted on the county’s Web site at wataugacounty.org.
