Lloyd L. Childers

 Mr. Lloyd Lee Childers, 85, of Oak Ridge Church Rd., Connelly Springs, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at Frye Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1921 in  Burke  County to the late Henry H. Childers and Nancy Cranford Childers.

Mr. Childers was a United States Army Veteran serving in Africa and Italy during World War II. He retired from Burlington Industries, and was a member of Shoup’s Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also served as a RA Leader and Sunday School Teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Evans Childers of the home; a son, Gary Childers and wife Emily of Boone; a daughter, Gail Killian and husband Harvey of Connelly Springs; four grandchildren, Monte Killian, Derrick Killian, Carrie Godwin and husband Kenan, and Matthew Childers; one great grandson, Kailer Godwin.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his half brothers and sisters, Gilmer Childers, Arthur Childers, Elihu Childers, Jennie Childers, Maggie Childers, Ida C. Garmon, Will Shuffler, Titus Shuffler, David Shuffler, Ada Saunders, Annie Powell, Nellie Ingle, Myrtle Watson and Mary Childers.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 at Shoup’s Grove Baptist  Church. Officiating will be the Rev. J.C. Bradley. Interment will follow in the Shoup’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Shoup’s Grove Baptist  Church.

Katie Cox Hampton

Mrs. Katie Cox Hampton, 88, of 5845 Old 421 South, Deep Gap, N.C., died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006, at Glenbridge Health Care in Boone.

She was born April 11, 1918, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Clifford and Nevada Cox.

Mrs. Hampton was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Johnny Hampton and wife, Joan, of Deep Gap; one daughter, Shirley Hampton of West Jefferson; one brother, Leonard Cox and wife, Marcell, of Harrisburg, N.C.; two granddaughters, Christy Hampton Horne and husband, Charles, of Charlotte, N.C., and Cherie Hampton Smith and husband, Ben, of Fleetwood; two great-grandchildren, Hampton Horne and Liza Horne, both of Charlotte. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Hampton; two brothers, Bine and Obie Cox; and three sisters, Biddie Triplett, Zora Thornberg, and Lora Higgins.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2006, at 2 o’clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Brent Bolick. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

The family received friends Thursday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

David Urias Keathley Sr.

Mr. David Urias Keathley, Sr., 70, of Charleston, S.C., died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006 in the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital of complications from a drug taken for prostate cancer. 

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; children, David, John, Mandy, and Kenny; and three grandchildren.  The Keathleys formerly lived in Blowing Rock, NC, and were members of First Presbyterian Church in Boone, N.C.

A memorial service was held in Charleston on Monday, October 30. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Music Program, (712 Wappoo Road, Charleston, S.C. 29407) or the Kimmel Cancer Center at John Hopkins University, Development Office, Memorial for David Keathley, (100 North Charles Street, Suite 234, Baltimore, Md. 21201).

Suma Proffit Miller

Mrs. Suma Proffit Miller, 87, of 2578 Meat Camp Road, Boone, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, 2006, at her residence.

She was born May 28, 1919 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Frank and Floye Thomas Proffitt.

Mrs. Miller was a former employee of Trailway Laundry and Cleaners and Wilcox Drug Company. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Earlene Holaday and husband, Harry, of Boone, and Faye Cline and husband, Joe Ben, of Morganton; two grandsons, Joe Cline and wife, Julia, of Morganton, and Perry Cline and wife, Pam, of Boone; four great-granddaughters, Jessica Cline of Charlotte, Leah Cline and Anna Cline, both of Morganton, and Peyton Cline of Boone; two sisters, Phyllis Eller and husband, James, of Mountain City, Tenn., and Jewel Thomas and husband, Albert, of Zionville; and one brother, Ralph Proffitt and wife, Mary Lee, of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clint Miller; one infant daughter, Jewel Jean Miller; her father and mother, Frank and Floye Thomas Proffitt; one sister, Eva Proffitt; and seven brothers, Glenn, Kermit, Marvin, Cless, Dean, Barnard, and Ray Proffitt.

Services will be conducted Friday morning, Nov. 3, 2006, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Delmar James and the Rev. Rod Randolph. Burial will follow in Proffit's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

The family has respectfully requested no food.

Rev. Clara Elizabeth Saunders

Rev. Clara Elizabeth Saunders, 80, of Shady St., Newland, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006 at the Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

A native of Lenoir, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Flossie Edmisten Robbins.

Rev. Saunders evangelized overseas, going to Africa and Rio de Janeiro.  She belonged to the Church of God for 65 years and pastored several churches. She had organized and built over 50 churches throughout the United States.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters, Patricia Coffey of Lebanon, Tenn., and Carol Elizabeth Saunders of Newland; her son, Robert M. Saunders of Newland; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Herman Saunders; a son, Douglas Saunders; and a daughter, Loretta Gail Saunders.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4, from the Pineola Church of God with the Rev. Roy Barnwell officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Reno, NV.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Louise Henline Stanbery

Mrs. Louise Henline Stanbery, age 78, of 1157 Ridge Road, Boone, died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 1, 2006, at her residence.

She was born June 19, 1928 in  Mitchell  County, a daughter of the late Dock and Sally Blalock Henline.

Mrs. Stanbery was a homemaker and a member of Bethelview  United Methodist  Church.

Survivors include one daughter, JoAnn Townsend and husband, Will; two sons, Larry Stanbery and wife, Lynda, and Scott Stanbery and wife, Ollie Jackson, all of Boone; one sister, Brite Lyons and husband, Bill, of Christianburg, Va.; and one brother, Bill Henline and wife, Emma Lee, of Spruce Pine. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Stanbery; one son, Doug Stanbery; five sisters, and two brothers.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning, November 4, 2006, at 11:00 o'clock, at  Bethelview  United Methodist  Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. John Jackson and the Rev. Allen Marsh. Burial will follow in  Bethelview United Methodist  Church  Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6:30 until 8:30, at the Hampton Funeral Service.

Natella Church Greer

Mrs. Natella Church Greer, 83, of Prospect Avenue, Lewiston, Idaho, a native of Wilkes County, and a former resident of Boone, wife of the late William “Tude” Greer, died Wednesday night, Oct. 25, 2006, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lewiston, Idaho.

She was born Feb. 7, 1923, on Patton’s Ridge, Wilkes County, N.C. to Levi and Nettie Welborn Church.

Mrs. Greer attended grade school in Wilkes County; her secondary education was at Millers Creek and Appalachian High School through 11th grade. She married William H. “Tude” Greer on Feb. 3, 1940 at Elizabethton, Tenn. Five children were born of this marriage. Bill and Natella resided in Lenoir and the Boone area during the early years of their marriage before moving to Northern California.

She was employed by Humboldt County, first at the county hospital and then at health and welfare in Eureka, as a social worker for many years,  retiring in 1986. She was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church and most recently attended First Baptist Church in Lewiston, Idaho. Her other affiliations included Business and Professional Women, Eureka, Calif., and Arcata Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Arcata, Calif. Mrs. Greer relocated to Lewiston, Idaho in 1993, to be near her daughters. Her husband and her infant daughter, Novella, as well as her mother and father, six brothers, Challie, Lattie, Duard, Creeley, Theodore and Hansel Church; and two sisters, Ennis McNeil and Lessie Eller preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene Greer and wife, Loy, of Boone; Jerry Greer and wife, Penny, of Arcata, Calif.; two daughters, Alene Tutcher and husband, Paul, of Lewiston, Idaho and Marietta Swanson of Sherwood, Oregon; her grandchildren, Douglas and Barbara Greer, Regina and Tim Carroll, Leslie and Jeremiah Dancy, Natalie and Robert Howard, Kim and Richard Sykes, Elizabeth Cargill, Scott and Chrissy Cargill, Christopher Tutcher, Chad Peters, Kim and Troy Spear, Brandy Tutcher, Teresa James, Sharon Greer, Neil and Lisa Greer, Jon Greer and Michael and Leanne Brown; great-grandchildren, Christy and Chad Shew, Jeremy, David, Basha,  Andrew and Adam Greer, and Christina and Lindsay Winkle, Courtney, Kasey, McKenzie Thomason, Caden and Carter Sykes, Amber and Kelly Auch, Alissa Greer, Cassidy and Tyler Boatright, Robert and Megan Greer, Brendan and Cody Brown, Tanner and Sydney Spear, Logan and Laken Walker and Jessie Russell.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Jerry D. Greer and Dr. Larry Young. Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service.

Mazel Greene Parlier

Mrs. Mazel Greene Parlier, 86, of 5177 Bamboo Road, Boone, died Monday morning, Oct. 30, 2006, at her home.

She was born March 23, 1920, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Roy and Julia Watson Greene.

Mrs. Parlier was a member of Laurel Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, James Lee Parlier and wife, Dale, of Boone; one step-son, Truette Parlier and wife, Mozelle, of Wentworth, N.C.; one granddaughter, Michele Williams and husband, Chance, of Balls Creek, N.C.; one grandson, James Lee Parlier, Jr. of Denver, N.C.; three step-granddaughters, Connie Shook and Darlene Strum, both of Cleveland, Ga. and Brenda Patrick of Dallas, Texas; two step-grandsons, Wayne Parlier of Eden and Mike Parlier of Asheboro. She is also survived by eight step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John James Parlier; one daughter, Dorothy Parlier Hartley; her father and mother, Roy and Julia Watson Greene; one step-daughter, Mary Edith Atkins; one son-in-law, Harold B. Hartley; and one sister, Minnie Greene.

Services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Brent Bolick and the Rev. Gordon Rawls. Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times the family will be at the Parlier home, 5177 Bamboo Road, Boone.

Sandra ‘Sandy’ Amos

Sandra “Sandy” Amos, 72, of 314 Old Turnpike Road, Banner Elk, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

Survivors include a special friend, Doris Bliss of Banner Elk, and a god son, Jason Isaacs, of Denver, Colo.

A memorial service will be held at Liberty United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 5 o’clock. The sanctuary will open at 5 p.m. for an informal sharing and celebrating of the life of Sandra. A covered dish dinner will follow in the fellowship hall at 6 p.m.

All friends of Sandy are invited.

Glenn Dale Andrews Sr.

Mr. Glenn Dale Andrews, Sr., age 76, of Deer Valley Drive, Boone, died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 28, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center. 

He was born Jan. 5, 1930 in Sparta, a son of the late Glenn R. and Kate Edwards Andrews. 

Mr. Andrews was a longtime businessman in Boone and formerly in Wilkes County. He was in the automobile business for over 50 years in Watauga County. 

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Patricia R. Andrews; two daughters, Glenda Andrews and husband, John Richardson, of Fleetwood and Debbie Warren and husband, Lee, of Boone; one son, Glenn Andrews, Jr. and wife, PaulAnne of Boone; four grandchildren, Blaire, Robert and Debin Warren, and Nathan Andrews, all of Boone; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, A. Dean Andrews and Robert E. Andrews.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at noon at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Alan Blume and the Rev. Bud Russell.

Dr. William George Guthrie III

Dr. William George Guthrie III, 58, of Boone, N.C. died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, N.C.

He was born June 25, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan, son of William George Guthrie II and Kathryn Guthrie. 

Dr. Guthrie was a retired college professor from Appalachian State University (1980-1998), Boone, N.C. and Lees-McRae College (1999-2004), Banner Elk, N.C. He received both his BA in Economics and Mathematics (1973) and his Master of Arts in Economics & Statistics (1976) at Western Michigan University.  He obtained his doctorate in Philosophy in Economics (1981) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

He was a favored professor by his students; he had the keen ability of challenging his students while thoroughly caring about their academic achievements. He loved teaching and will be greatly missed by all of the lives he has touched throughout the years.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Rose Elizabeth Bursey Guthrie; his father-in-law, Ruel “Elvis” Bursey; and his goddaughter, Rebecca Dianne Tippins.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. The family received friends following services.

Ernest Thomas Hayes

Mr. Ernest Thomas Hayes, 91, of  Hickory Nut Ridge Rd., Granite Falls, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006 at Lenoir Health Care.

He was born Feb. 5, 1915 in  Vilas, N.C., to the late James William Hayes and Amanda Alberta Hayes.

Mr. Hayes was a member of  Mountain  Grove Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, James Ernest Hayes of Hudson, Edward Monroe Hayes and wife, Dawn, of Benton Harbor, MI.; daughters, Mary Jean Yoder and husband, Ken, of Hickory, N.C., Lynda Hollars and husband, Billy, of Lenoir; daughter-in-law, Mary Hayes of Reidsville, N.C.; one brother, Rev. Elliott Hayes and wife, Roseanna, of Vilas, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Miller Hayes; a son, David Thomas Hayes; one brother; five sisters; and one granddaughter.

Services were conducted Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Mountain Grove Baptist  Church with Dr. Clifton Black and Rev. Tom Brashears and Rev. Tommy Hayes officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Nell Clark Hayes

Mrs. Nell Clark Hayes, 83, of 196 Richard Childress Road, Montezuma, died Thursday night, Oct. 26, 2006, at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 10,1923 in Montezuma, NC.

Mrs. Hayes was the retired owner and operator of Hayes Nursing Home, a member of Aaron Baptist Church and the widow of the late John Edward Hayes.

Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Harmon and husband, Tim, of the home; three sons, Rev. Tommy Hayes and wife, Mary Ann, of Roseboro, Bill Hayes and wife, Claudia, of Sanford, and Ralph Hayes of Asheville; three granddaughters, Dara Blackwell and husband, Dustin, of Mamers, Tonya Getz and husband, Jesse, of Cleveland, Ohio, Amanda Hayes of Greensboro; a grandson, Bryan Hayes of Roseboro; one brother, Harold Clark of Minneapolis; three great-grandchildren; and a special care giver, Christina Childress.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Villa Johnson Clark; one brother, Robert Clark; four sisters, Ruby Childress, Edna Martin, Ruth Clark, and Louise Lindsay.

Funeral services for Mrs. Nell Clark Hayes will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 o'clock at Aaron Baptist Church. The body will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00. Rev. Tommy Hayes, Rev. Jack Bryant, Rev. Dennis Aldridge and Rev. Steve Baughman will officiate. Burial will follow in Montezuma Cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Aaron Baptist Church, P.O. Box 266, Montezuma, N.C. 28653.

Florence Glenn Moody

Mrs. Florence Glenn Moody, 85, of Mountain Dale Road, Vilas, died Thursday evening, Oct. 26, 2006, at the Davant Rehab and Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock.

She was born Dec. 25, 1920 in Butler, Tenn., a daughter of Andrew and Sigall Ward Glenn.

Mrs. Moody was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Dwight Lee and Charles Len Moody, both of Vilas; one daughter, Linda Loretta Seamon of Vilas; one brother, Tommy Jackson Glenn of Vilas; and one sister, Joy Harmon of Vilas.  Thirteen grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Moody; two sons, William Eugene and Ford Joseph Moody; two brothers, Dudley and Burl Glenn; one sister, Edna Mains; and two grandsons, Michael and Billy Ford Moody.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Antioch Baptist Church, officiated by Kenneth Banner. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Mountain Dale Baptist Church Cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Moody family in care of Charles Len Moody, 3618 Mountain Dale Road, Vilas, N.C. 28692.

The family received friends Sunday evening from 5-6:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
