Furman invades with first place in the SoCon on the line

When Furman returns to Kidd Brewer Stadium for their annual showdown with Appalachian State, plenty will be on the line.  winner of Saturday’s game, which begins at 3:30 p.m., and is on Sports South, will be in the driver’s seat to winning the Southern Conference championship. Furman’s road still must go through Georgia Southern, which played inspired football in a 27-20 double overtime loss to Appalachian State last Saturday.

Paladins to re-enter The Twilight Zone

To the casual observer, the black and gold patch at the south end of the Kidd Brewer Stadium turf is known simply as the south end zone.  To the Furman Paladins, it might as well be known as The Twilight Zone.

Three Pioneers reach state finals

CLEMMONS — Watauga sent three golfers to the state finals after each finished in the top 25 at the Western Regionals held at The Glen in Clemmons Monday.  Samantha Ryan, Eileen Purpur and Linzy Cook all advanced to the state round, which will be played Monday and Tuesday in Pinehurst.

For the Watauga Pioneer volleyball program in past years, getting past the second round of the playoffs has been a stumbling block. In the last three years, Watauga has not been able to reach the NCHSAA 4-A version of the Sweet 16.

Watauga eyes 10-win year

Watauga’s football team has had several games where the stakes were high.  When the Pioneers played border rivals Avery and Ashe counties, it was for bragging rights and staying undefeated. When they played Wilkes Central, it was to go 5-0 in non-conference games. The South Caldwell win was for homecoming, the win over Freedom was to avenge two decades of losing to the Patriots.

ASU gives ball away eight times in two games

Appalachian State has rolled up big scores during games this season. But turnovers have been costly the last two weeks. In Appalachian State’s 27-20 double overtime victory over Georgia Southern last Saturday, two of the Mountaineers’ four turnovers led to 14 points. It helped the Eagles keep pace with the Mountaineers and forge a 17-17 tie after four quarters.

Early goal lifts WHS to chilly win over AC

Watauga’s Luke Robertson and Zach Greene didn’t let the cold weather keep them from ambushing Alexander Central’s defense.  Robertson took a pass from Greene and scored after just eight seconds had elapsed in the Pioneers’ 3-0 victory at Jack Groce Stadium Monday night.

Charlotte United trips ’89 Lady Avs —When the ’89 girls and Charlotte United met for the first two times this season, both games ended in ties. The third match saw Charlotte pull away for a 3-1 win.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Appalachian State hit at a .408 mark and held its opponent to a .000 hitting percentage, as it defeated The Citadel, 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-15), in Southern Conference play Sunday at McAlister Field House.
