Georgia Southern ditches option

Appalachian State head coach Jerry Moore is not buying into the idea that Georgia Southern is vunerable this year.  Even though the Eagles have struggled to a 3-3 overall record, 2-1 in the Southern Conference, Moore still feels his Mountaineers will face a very dangerous team when they play at Paulson Stadium at noon Saturday. It’s not the fact that Appalachian State has not won in Statesboro, Ga., since 1996, when Georgia Southern went 4-7.

South Caldwell girls, WHS boys capture victories

MORGANTON — Watauga’s boys cross country team won another Northwestern 4-A Conference championship Wednesday at Freedom.  Pioneers, led by Luke Nelson’s second place finish, scored 36 points. Freedom was second with 65 points followed by South Caldwell with 83 and A.C. Reynolds with 96.

Pioneers on the rebound

Even with its 31-6 loss to A.C. Reynolds last Friday, one thing still rings true for Watauga — the Pioneers are still off to one of their best starts in school history.  Friday was the first hiccup in the Pioneers’ 8-1 overall record. Their 3-1 mark leaves them in second place in the Northwestern 4-A Conference.

Rockets deny WHS

ASHEVILLE — In a clash of unbeaten Northwestern 4-A Conference teams, A.C. Reynolds was not yet ready to give up the stranglehold it has had on the league to Watauga just yet.  Reynolds took advantage of several Watauga mistakes and claimed a 31-6 victory over the Pioneers in front of a homecoming crowd at A.C. Reynolds. The No. 4 Rockets stayed undefeated at 9-0 overall, 4-0 in the NWC ,and needs just two more wins to capture another league championship.

Hosting a Midnight Madness event is supposed to create hype. Appalachian State added a different twist to its Mountaineer Madness by asking one of the school’s parents to address the crowd of about 3,000 who were at the Holmes Center Friday night and Saturday morning.

Senior middle blocker Amy Lewis had a career high in total and assisted  blocks as the Mountaineers beat Georgia Southern 3-1 in the last of a five match homestand Saturday night at the Holmes Center.

Appalachian takes early lead, holds on

After four straight blowouts, Appalachian State eventually had to play a close game. And though Wofford gave the Mountaineers fits at times, the Terriers could not overcome a two-touchdown deficit in the first quarter and lost to Appalachian State 14-7.
