Unbeaten Pioneers set for showdown with Freedom
For a long time, Freedom has played the role of bully when it came to Watauga football. In fact, the Pioneers have not beaten Freedom since 1984. They’ve come close, at times, but the Patriots have managed to have their way with the Pioneers over the past two decades.

Mountaineers face improved Phoenix
The last time Appalachian State played Elon, the Mountaineers ran roughshod over the Phoenix, beating Elon 52-14 in a game that didn’t seem that close. That game, played at Elon’s Rhodes Stadium, was the final regular season game for the Mountaineers in 2005. It clinched them the Southern Conference championship and helped them grab a No. 2 seeding in the Division I-AA playoffs.

Stopping the run key in last Friday’s win
It may have bent a little bit at times, but Watauga’s defense didn’t break much in the Pioneers’ 14-7 win over South Caldwell. While their own Eric Breitenstein gained 263 yards on 39 carries, Watauga’s defense held South Caldwell to 160 yards in total offense.

Pioneers take early lead, pound Cavs
Watauga’s soccer team found out that games are a lot easier to win when a big lead is taken. The Pioneers scored two goals in the first three minutes of their 5-0 victory over East Burke at Jack Groce Stadium Monday night. A pair of Robertsons — first Luke and then Ben — gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead before most of the folks in attendance had settled in.

Big play, big win
Watauga running back Eric Breitenstein, once again, was the workhorse for the Pioneers Friday night against South Caldwell. But an improbable pass play helped Watauga knock off the Spartans 14-7 at Jack Groce Stadium. Quarterback Blake Beason, facing a fourth-and-nine from the Spartans’ 37, found Derek Smith along the left sideline and hit him with a 33-yard bomb to give the Pioneers a first-and-goal at the South Caldwell 4-yard line.

Many happy returns
BOILING SPRINGS — It was arguably the biggest game in Gardner-Webb’s history. Certainly hosting the Division I-AA national champion Appalachian State was one of the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ biggest since they made the move to Division I-AA football back in 2000. It was supposed to be just another game for the Mountaineers. Instead, Dexter Jackson turned it into his own personal showcase.
