CFL honors Fowlkes

From staff reports

Former Appalachian State receiver DaVon Fowlkes was named the Canadian Football League’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his peformance last Saturday in Hamilton’s win over Edmonton.

Fowlkes returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown, sparking the Ti-Cats to a 27-22 victory over the Eskimos. It was Fowlkes’ second career CFL game.

Fowlkes, who rewrote several receiving records at Appalachian State, also returned kickoffs for 84 yards. He is one of three Mountaineers on the Ti-Cats’ roster. Richie Williams is a backup quarterback and Wayne Smith is a guard.

Edmonton gets a rematch with Hamilton this Friday in Alberta.

Men’s soccer

ASHEVILLE — A strong offensive attack in the final 10 seconds didn’t yield a goal as the Appalachian State men’s soccer team fell to UNC Asheville, 2-1, at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.

Appalachian, which entered the match ranked seventh in the South Region, fell to 5-2-0. The Bulldogs improved to 3-4-0. ASU outshot UNCA 17-14 and had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Arie Muniz scored Appalachian’s goal off a pass from Sean Sassano. The goal was Muniz’s second in as many matches. Sassano has now recorded three assists in the last two games.

Appalachian hosts Georgia Southern Saturday at 1 p.m.

Volleyball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State’s Lorelle Rau has been named the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 20, the league office announced Wednesday.

A native of Oakland Park, Fla., Rau led the Mountaineers to a 2-2 mark last week, including a 3-0 win over Chattanooga in their SoCon opener September 13 in Chattanooga.

Appalachian followed the match with a trip to the Lady Topper Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky., where Rau tied a career-high with 63 assists in the opening match against Tennessee Tech.

Rau tallied 196 assists during the week, which moved her into fifth in the ASU record books for career assists with 2,093.

She also recorded 29 digs and 14 kills on the week.

Off the court, Rau boasts a 3.708 grade point average and is an art management major. She is a member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll and was named to the 2005 Academic All-Conference Team.

Wrestling

Appalachian State senior Terreyl Williams was ranked 20th nationally in the 133-pound weight class by WreslingReport.com, in its recently released preseason rankings.

Williams went 13-8 in matches last year and helped Appalachian to a fourth-place finish at the Southern Conference tournament. His performance in 2005-06 was highlighted by 4-1 records at the Cleveland State Open and the Carolina Open.

WreslingReport.com chose Penn’s Matt Valenti as the No. 1 wrestler in the 133 class. Williams and defending champ Valenti have the opportunity to face off in Appalachian’s second meet of the season, when the Mountaineers travel to the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia on Nov. 25.

Field hockey

Davidson defeated Appalachian State 4-1 in a NorPac conference match Wednesday.

The Mountaineers kept Davidson to 15 shots, almost evening the count by the end of the game with 14 themselves. However, ASU allowed to convert on two of their six penalty corners for goals, either directly or indirectly. Appalachian also fell behind early, conceding two goals in the first 20 minutes.

While Appalachian could only sneak through one goal on the night, signs point to the Mountaineers’ offense steadily improving. ASU fired 12 shots on goal, with Andrea Lee and Erica Muschamp leading the charge with three each.

Lee converted five minutes into the second half, off a penalty corner. Assisting on the play were junior Jessica Harris and freshman Jeanette Miers.
