Watauga opens NWC slate vs. Spartans

Like last week, Watauga faces an undefeated team. However, the stakes are a bit higher than they were last week.  This Friday, the Pioneers (5-0) host South Caldwell (5-0) in a showdown of undefeated Northwestern 4-A Conference foes. While it can be argued that all games are important, there is more at stake for the Pioneers when they line up against the Spartans Friday night.

Pioneers sweep Patriots, top HHS

Watauga’s volleyball team not only is trying to win the Northwestern 4-A Conference, but to be good enough to advance deep in the 4-A state playoffs.  That is why coach Kim Pryor scheduled games like Hickory, which pushed Watauga before falling 3-2 to the Pioneers in a non-conference match Wednesday. Just one day earlier, Watauga swept Freedom 3-0, winning 25-12, 25-15, 25-17.

Watauga netters edge Patriots

Though a road to a championship can be filled with several speed bumps, Watauga’s girls’ tennis team faced a formidable roadblock Tuesday afternoon at the Carroll Complex.  It took a gutsy performance from No. 3 singles player Mary Clements and a doubles victory from Watauga’s No. 1 team of Brianna Fleming and Sarah Blackwelder to finally push the Pioneers past Freedom 5-4.

ASU defense smothers Mars Hill 41-0

For a starting debut, Mars Hill proved to be tailor-made for Armanti Edwards. The freshman Appalachian State quarterback, making his first start as a Mountaineer, had little trouble generating offense against the Division-II Lions during Appalachian State’s 41-0 victory at Kidd Brewer Stadium.  Edwards guided the Mountaineers to a 27-0 halftime lead and nearly had another touchdown pass just before the break, but saw his pass to William Mayfield intercepted on the final play of the first half.

Breitenstein humble despite big numbers
