Mountaineers take on 2004 champs
For non-conference Division I-AA football, this one has the potential to be a doozy. Appalachian State hosts James Madison at Kidd Brewer Stadium Saturday in a game matching the 2005 I-AA national champion Mountaineers with the 2004 champs. It’s a game that will have the eyes of the I-AA nation checking updates either on the Internet or stadium scoreboards nationwide. A crowd of at least 20,000 is expected to wedge its way into Kidd Brewer Stadium. There could be many more fans should the weather stay clear.

Saturday should be worth any playoff risk
Now this is how a team defends its national championship.
Both Appalachian State and James Madison should get plenty of credit for having the guts to face each other Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Pioneers blank E. Forsyth
For about 78 minutes, both Watauga and East Forsyth created one scoring chance after another only to see them all fail. Finally, with about two minutes left in a scoreless match, Chris Brubaker slipped a shot, taken just inside the 18-yard box-line, into the East Forsyth net to give the Pioneers a one-goal lead. A minute later, Watauga’s Zach Greene scored another goal, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 win Wednesday at Jack Groce Stadium.

Eagles up next for undefeated Watauga
Adrian Snow has warned his Watauga Pioneers: Wilkes Central is not the same Eagles team they’ve been in recent years. Wilkes Central (1-2), which has not beaten Watauga (3-0) in its last 10 tries, gets another shot at the Pioneers Friday night when the two teams play in Morovian Falls. For Wilkes Central, it’s a chance to win two in a row. The Eagles pounded East Wilkes 47-18 last Friday after losing their first two games.

East Burke is one of several teams expected to compete for the NWC championship and Pryor did not want the Pioneers heading to Thursday’s showdown with defending league champion Alexander Central with an 0-1 league mark.

Mountaineers’ offense must improve
Former Tampa Bay head coach John McKay said, when asked one day about the execution of his offense, that he “was in favor of it.” Appalachian State head coach Jerry Moore has not reached that point with his offense. However, he would like to see better execution when his Mountaineers host James Madison this Saturday afternoon.

Dukes coach remains annoyed
There was very little that James Madison head coach Mickey Matthews liked about his team’s 14-3 win over Bloomburg last Saturday in the Dukes’ season opener. “I thought it was a great crowd,” Matthews said on the Atlantic-10 Conference call Monday. “Bloomburg played very well and my wife had a great dress for the evening. That’s about all the positives we had during the night.”

Pioneers welcome tough field this weekend
It’s no secret that Watauga’s boys’ soccer team has been banged up this year. “We had one practice where we had 12 kids,” said coach Doug Kidd. “It’s hard to get anything accomplished like that.”

ASU can’t cash in on N.C. State miscues, falls 23-10
RALEIGH — To beat N.C. State, Appalachian State had to limit its mistakes and take advantage of anything the Wolfpack gave them. Though some ASU mistakes led to some Wolfpack points, Appalachian State’s failure to score when given the chance caught up with the Mountaineers in their 23-10 loss Saturday in front of 57,583 at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Defense holds its own vs. State
RALEIGH — They gave up a big play now and again. They even gave up a couple of scoring drives. Yet, for the most part, Appalachian State’s defense not only held its own against N.C. State at Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday night. It took a 43-yard run by Andre Brown with 6:55 left in the first quarter to get the Wolfpack on the scoreboard.

Pioneers pound Avery, improve to 3-0 on season
It seems like a simple goal, really. Yet winning the first three games of a football season has eluded Watauga for years. The 2006 version of the Pioneers did just that. The Pioneers broke open a close game with three second-half touchdowns and roared past Avery 34-13 Friday night at Jack Groce Stadium.

Commentary: Fast start means extra to Pioneers
Beginning a season 3-0 may not mean much to some folks. Down in Asheville near the Bat Cave, A.C. Reynolds will probably read this and roll their collective eyes. Those at Charlotte Independence are proud of their 97-game winning streak and they should be — it’s the longest in the nation.

Stone satisfied with victory
RALEIGH (AP) — The numbers were hardly the kind of thing a starting quarterback hopes to see: seven completions, 36 passing yards and an interception. Then again, North Carolina State's Marcus Stone figured they didn’t matter much.

Freshman impressed with crowd
RALEIGH — Mario Acitelli had never played in front of a crowd like he saw at Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday night. The Appalachian State freshman offensive tackle took over for the injured Kyle Knox, who hurt his ankle during fall practices. The 57,583 was not the biggest crowd ever to see the Mountaineers play (the record is 91,414 at LSU last year), but it was by far the biggest to see the Charlotte Catholic standout play.
