Carol Gibb Harding

Carol Gibb Harding, Ph.D.,  63, of B. H. Duncan Road, Zionville died Monday morning, Sept. 4, 2006, at home. 

She was born in Mercer, Pa., a daughter of Raymond and Edith Martin Gibb. 

Dr. Harding was a professor of Educational Psychology at Appalachian State University, and Professor Emerita at Loyola University in Chicago. She was a nationally known educator, a prolific scholar, researcher and author of numerous books and articles in the field of human development. She was the Past President of the Illinois Association for Infant Mental Health. She obtained her BS from Indiana University Pennsylvania and her PhD from the University of Delaware.

Surviving are her husband Art Safer; five children, Christopher Harding of Falmouth, MA, Elizabeth Harding of Charlotte, Mark Harding of Valle Crucis, Julie Wodock and husband, Pete, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Alan Safer of Washington, DC; two grandchildren, Sophie and Evan Wodock of Indianapolis, Indiana; her parents, Raymond and Edith Martin Gibb of York, Pa.; two sisters, Phyllis Short and husband, Tom, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Barbara Fake of York, Pa.; two brothers, William Gibb and wife, Ellen, of York, Pa. and Robert Gibb and wife, Jean, of Levitz, Pa. 

Services for Carol Gibb Harding will be private. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center, in care of Watauga Medical Center, Post Office Box 2570, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Maggie Rhymer Triplett

Mrs. Maggie Rhymer Triplett, 82, of 1535 Old Highway 421 South, Boone, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.

She was born Oct. 8, 1923 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late C.D. and Mattie Wheeler Rhymer.

Mrs. Triplett was a homemaker and a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Butch Triplett, and one grandson, Dustin Triplett, both of Boone; two great-grandsons, Nathan and Mason Triplett of Fox Island, Washington; two sisters, Tansy Ragan of Lenoir, and Carolyn Harrison and husband, Jay, of Lenoir; five brothers, Conard Rhymer of Triplett, Gwyn Rhymer and wife, Mary, of Lenoir, Stewart Rhymer and wife, Joyce, of Deep Gap, Ken Rhymer and wife, Pat, of Boone, and Ernie Rhymer and wife, Connie, of Yadkinville. A number of nieces and nephews, many special friends, and all of Maggie's "Kids" also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Triplett; a granddaughter, Rebecca Triplett; three sisters, Della Hartley, Opal Triplett, and Georgia Wheeler; and three brothers, Clise Rhymer, Claude Rhymer, and an infant brother.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning, Sept. 9, 2006, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 9:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary Lawrence and the Rev. Ted Williams. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the home of the son, Butch Triplett, 1535 Old Highway 421 South, Boone.

Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Rutherwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 142 Don Hayes Road, Boone, N.C.  28607.

Bobby Greene

Mr. Bobby Greene, 63, of Knob Creek Lane, Morganton, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 3, 2006 at the Valdese Hospital.

He was born June 30, 1943 in Watauga County, a son of Nonnie Greene and the late Dallas Stewart Greene. 

Mr. Greene attended Calvin Heights Baptist Church in Morganton and was a retired car salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Kyong Hi Greene; two sons, Eugene Greene and wife, Lori, of Lenoir and Kameron Greene of Greer, S.C.; his mother, Mrs. Nonnie Greene of Deep Gap; four brothers, Mack Greene and wife,  Janis, Jack Greene, Joe Greene and wife, Linda, and Ricky Greene and wife, Carlene, all of Deep Gap; three sisters, Geraldine Harless and husband, Larry, of West Jefferson, Darlene Greene-Moodie and husband,  Tom, of Knoxville, Tenn. and Pauline Taylor and husband, Mark, of Purl ear; and three grandchildren, Jessica, Megan and Jordan Greene.  A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son Jason; and one brother, Donnie Greene.

Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Rick Cornejo, the Rev. Ralph Gouge and the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn.  The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1-2 p.m., one hour prior to services, at the chapel.  Burial will follow in the Mt. Paran Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family respectfully requests no food.

Viola Diane Greene

Mrs. Viola Diane Greene, 79, of Hamby Mountain Road, Wilkesboro went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center.

She was born August 26, 1927 in Watauga County to Turner and Florence Dulce Younce Greene.

Mrs. Greene was retired from Harpers Furniture in Lenoir. Her life was filled with the love of her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Greene; three daughters, Audrey Greene and husband, William, of Boone, Kathy Triplett and husband, Wayne, of Winston-Salem, Joyce Anderson and husband, Jerry, of Wilkesboro; one son, Kenneth Greene of Wilkesboro; one daughter-in-law, Ann Greene of North Wilkesboro, whom was loved as a daughter; three sisters, Virginia Spears, Velma Phelps, both of Lenoir, Vandella Adams of Morganton; one brother, David Greene of Morganton; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 5, 2006, at 4 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn and the Rev. Michael Greene officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Deep Gap.

The family received friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Tuesday from 2:30 to 3:30 prior to the service.

Ethel Ketchie Lambert

Mrs. Ethel Ketchie Lambert, 100, of 418 Chestnut Drive, Blowing Rock, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Blowing Rock Extended Care.

She was born August 17, 1906 in China Grove, N.C., a daughter of the late Herman Edgar Ketchie and Amanda Taylor Ketchie.

Mrs. Lambert graduated from Kannapolis High School and attended Women’s College in Greensboro for one year.

Survivors include one son, David M. Lambert, Sr. and wife, Sarah, of Johns Island, S.C.; one grandson, David M. Lambert, Jr. and wife, Kaye, of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Tina Lambert Thomas of Upperville, Va.; four great-granddaughters, Jamie Leigh Thomas, Amanda Shaw Thomas, Kayce Dakota Thomas, and Kelly Alexandra Thomas, all of Upperville, Va.; two great-grandsons, David Marsh Lambert, III, and John Pass Lambert, both of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Marsh Lambert; and five brothers, Charles, Homer, Robert, Edgar and Jerry Ketchie.

Graveside services and burial will be conducted Wednesday morning, Sept. 6, 2006, at 11:00 o'clock, at Floral Garden Memorial Park in High Point. Officiating will be Pastor Tim Smith.

The family wishes to express appreciation for the care and support given by the caregivers of Blowing Rock Hospital Extended Care and Blowing Rock Hospital.

This was a good, kind, caring lady beloved by everyone who knew her. There was a motto that hung over her door that said, “Sit long, talk much and laugh often.” And there were many of us that loved to talk and laugh with her. Thank you Ethel !!

Mary Anna Brewer Wooten

Mrs. Mary Anna Brewer Wooten, 82, of 312 Sorrento Knolls Drive in Blowing Rock, N.C., passed away September 5, 2006 at Glenbridge Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. 

She was born in Winston-Salem on August 20, 1924 to Etta Estelle Butner Brewer and Fred Madison Brewer.

Mrs. Wooten was of Moravian heritage and a life-long member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She was a retired inspector from Tyco, Inc.  She had also worked as a real estate broker and notary public. Earlier in her life she worked in her family’s restaurant and in Quality Control at Western Electric Corp. She enjoyed cooking and baking and delighted many friends and family members who ate at her table.

Most likely she will be remembered as Mrs. Santa Claus. She and her husband, Ed, were well-known both in Winston-Salem and the surrounding areas for their many appearances as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Her sweet spirit will be missed.

She is survived by one daughter, Trimella Wooten Chaney and husband, Neville Chaney, of Blowing Rock; a stepson, Ed Wooten and wife, Barbara, of Winston-Salem; and a step-daughter, Rebecca Wooten Brown and husband, Eddie, of Winston-Salem. Grandchildren include Nathan Chaney and Jacob Chaney of Blowing Rock,  Lisa Wooten, Teresa Wooten  Owen , Andrea Wooten Tuttle, Lee Wooten, and  Edwin Brown IV of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Wooten is also survived by several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and two sisters, Lillian Brewer Rabb and Ruth Brewer Beck and husband, Clifton, of Winston-Salem; and by two brothers,  T.E. Brewer and wife, Betty, of Wake Forest, N.C. and James E. Brewer and wife, Delma, of Fancy Gap, Va.

She is preceded in death by her husband, E. Edgar Wooten; her parents; and an infant daughter, Bonnie Rae Wooten.

The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem on Thursday, September 7th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral will be conducted at Bethel United Methodist Church on Burke Mill Road in Winston-Salem at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 8th.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Bethel United Methodist Church.

Ann Davidson Clark

Mrs. Ann Davidson Clark, 82, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at  Watauga  Medical  Center.

She was a graduate of Atherton High School in  Louisville,  Ky. and attended the University of  Louisville. She was secretary of the freshman class and a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, served on the Board of Directors and was a hospital volunteer.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Nancy Kaltenbach and husband, Carl, of Prairieville, La., Mrs. Margaret “Peggy” Murray and husband, Steve, of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Barbara Richardson and husband, Larry, of Tega Cay, S.C., and Mrs. Janet Sorenson and husband, Wayne, of Dillon, Montana; one son, Daniel E. Clark, III and wife, Myong, of Fayetteville, N.C.; eight beloved grandchildren, Jeff Sholar, Jerri Leigh Craddock, Marc Sholar and wife, Dawn, Daniel Clark, IV and wife, Jesi, Kimberly Clark, Clinton Sorenson, MaryAnn Sorenson, and Brian Murray; and five great-grandchildren, Heather and Landon Sholar, Trey and Aaron Craddock, and Marc Sholar.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Daniel E. Clark, Jr., M.D.; her father and mother, Nathaniel R. and Ella Boden Davidson; and one brother, Nathaniel R. Davidson, Jr.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 5, 2006, at 1:30 p.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Officiating will be Pastor Larry D. Jackson. Burial will follow in the Mount  Olivet Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock at Leavitt Funeral Home.

Walter G. Green

Mr. Walter G. Green,  52, of 319 Vannoy Lane, Boone, died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee.

He was born July 24, 1954 in Watauga County, a son of the late Stanley Hinckle and Orpha Webb Green.

Mr. Green was a surveyor for O. Wayne Green Surveyor Company and a magistrate for Watauga County.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Green of Blowing Rock; one brother, Wayne Green and wife, Anna, of Vilas; one niece, April Green of Vilas; one step-daughter, Natalie Bovino of Boone; two step-sons, Gregory Bovino of Washington, D.C., and Nicholas Bovino of Blowing Rock; one step-granddaughter, Lula Rose Bovino of Boone; an aunt, Adele Hendricks of Martinsville, Va.; a special cousin, Becky Rhodes of Martinsville, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a number of aunts and uncles, including, Sylvester Green.

Services were conducted Saturday morning, Sept.  2, 2006, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating were Mr. Scott Parsons, Mr. Don Williams and the Rev. Leon Silver. Burial followed in the Calloway Cemetery.

Herbert E. Greer

Mr. Herbert E. Greer, 71, of  6513 US Highway 221 South,  West Jefferson, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at his home.

He was born Oct. 25, 1934 in Watauga  County, a son of the late Garnett and Avis Church Greer.

Mr. Greer was owner and operator of Herbert’s BP in West Jefferson and a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joann Wilcox Greer; one son, Jeffrey Greer of the home; three sisters, Lois Severt and husband, Paul, of Kannapolis, Shirley Lambert of West Jefferson, and Martha Lewis and husband, Earl, of Creston; and one brother, William Greer of West Jefferson. Three step-children, four grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Tommy Dollar. Burial will follow in Mount  Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Mary B. Miller

Mary Lou Bentley Miller, 77, of Clover Church Road, Granite Falls, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at the Miller family home after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Caldwell County, the daughter of the late Noah Carolina Bentley and Ellen Lydia Rupard Bentley.

Mrs. Miller was a retired employee of Shuford Mills in Granite Falls and a member of Sunrise Baptist Church in Hudson. She married James Woodrow Miller Sr. on Dec. 25, 1946, in Caldwell County. Her husband of 35 years preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1981.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her son, James W. Miller Jr., and a special friend and caregiver, Michael Lein, both of the home; two daughters, Cathy Ann Miller-Gallashaw and husband, Greg, and Marsha Ellen Miller Rezapour, both of Monroe, Ga.; a grandson, James W. “Clovis” Miller III of Hickory; and two granddaughters, Jasmine Eileen Rezapour and Parisa Lynn Rezapour, both of Charlotte. Both Mrs. Miller and her husband always made loving sacrifices for their children, for which their children will always be thankful.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dewey Allison Bentley of Hudson and James Thomas Bentley of Granite Falls; and two sisters, Lillie Mae Bentley and Rose Belle Clark, both of Sawmills.

Services were conducted Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Mackie-High Funeral Home Chapel, with the the Rev. Edd Warren officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Hills Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St., NW, Lenoir, N.C. 28645.

Benjamin David Spencer

Mr. Benjamin David Spencer, 23, of Boone, N.C., and formerly of Gastonia, N.C., died accidentally in Alaska on Monday, August 28, 2006, while guiding a fishing party.

He was a native of Gastonia, N.C., and is the son of Jerry and Pam Spencer.

Mr. Spencer was a graduate of Ashbrook High School and Appalachian State University with a BS degree in Geography. He enjoyed  bowling, playing the guitar and harmonica. He was an avid outdoorsman and was passionate about fly fishing and more fly fishing! Ben worked with Appalachian Angler in Boone and was fulfilling his dream of being a fly fishing guide in Alaska.

Survivors include his parents, Pam and Jerry Spencer; brother, Josh Spencer; paternal grandmother, Louise Spencer of Gastonia; maternal grandfather, Pete Staley of Charlotte; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and many friends from Boone.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ruth Staley; grandfather, Arthur Spencer; and aunt, Angie Couick.

A memorial service was held Saturday afternoon, Sept. 2, 2006, at 2 p.m. at McLean Funeral Directors Founders Chapel, in Gastonia, with Deacon Jack Weisenhorn officiating.

Cecil Victor Ward

Mr. Cecil Victor Ward, 76, of U.S. Hwy. 321 North, Sugar Grove, died Sunday morning, Sept. 3, 2006 at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born August 26, 1930 in Watauga County, the son of the late Victor Dewey and Mamie Tester Ward. 

Mr. Ward was awarded a football scholarship to attend Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk where he earned a degree in Associates of Arts. He owned and operated Wards General Store in Sugar Grove and retired from the housekeeping department at Appalachian State University. Mr. Ward was a member of Pilgrims Rest Primitive Baptist Church and attended Presnell’s Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Kay Ward of Sugar Grove; and one son, Victor Dennis Ward of Sugar Grove. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Rebecca Wood Ward.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Green Valley Baptist Church, officiating by the Rev. John Jackson and the Rev. Bobby Abser. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Dennis Wood, 1009 Howard Edmisten Road in Sugar Grove.
