Watauga to host arch rival
Watauga coach Adrian Snow doesn’t necessarily check Appalachian State’s practices to make sure former Avery standout receiver Josh Johnson is really there. Nor does he go to Mars Hill to make sure former Vikings quarterback Ricky Spradling goes to class, or to Tusculum to make sure last year’s Avery signal caller Garrett Sutphen is still across the state line.

While defensive ends are often in the spotlight, defensive tackles do much of the grunt work of a defense. Often, their assignment is to occupy two blockers so a linebacker can make the tackle on a running play.

‘Drive of death’ saves win
LENOIR — Of all the points scored in Watauga’s 22-14 victory over Hibriten at Jeff Storie Memorial Stadium Friday night, perhaps the biggest play of the game yielded no points. Watauga, clinging to its 22-14 lead, had the ball, but was facing a fourth-and-one from its own 35-yard line. The Pioneers had a choice: go for the first down, or punt.
“When we went on that drive of death, and that’s what it was, it’s either death by me or death by them,” Pioneers coach Adrian Snow said, “if we don’t make it at the 34-yard line, they’re going to take it and it’s our death.”
