Mrs. Ruby Cook

Mrs. Ruby Cook of Culpeper, Va., died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Claudine Clatterbuck in Culpeper, Va.

She was born in Triplett, N.C., July 30, 1911, to the late Wesley Randall and Pearl Rogers Randall. 

Survivors include three daughters, Claudine Clatterbuck, Jean Yancey and husband, Bill, and Peggy Browning; one son, Roger Cook and wife, Margaret; grandchildren, Scott Cook, Brenda Jones, Janet Winkler, Cindy Clatterbuck, Lynne Baker, Dale Yancey, Traci Browning, and Lanny Browning; great-grandchildren, Brendan Yancey, Dale Yancey, Jr., Brittany Yancey, Daniel Yancey, Amber Winkler, Nathan Winkler, Shae Jones, Sydney Gingerich and Dylan Gingerich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe C. Cook; a son, Owen Dale Cook; a sister, Betty Randall; and a son-in-law, James “Pete” Clatterbuck. 

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, in the Clore-English Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Rev. John Miller will be conducting the service. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, Va.

Pallbearers will be Gary Baker, Lanny Browning, Scott Cook, Dale Yancey, Nathan Winkler, Shae Jones, and Jack Rountree. Honorary Pallbearers are John Winkler, Ronnie Jones, and Jim Crutchfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of their mother to Family Care Home Health and Hospice, 610 Laurel Street, Culpeper, Va. 22701.

A special “thank you” to the wonderful people at Family Care Home Health and Hospice. Without your care and support of our mother and our family members, we could not have kept her at home through all of her sickness and death.

Anna Belle Crowe

Mrs. Anna Belle Crowe, 87, of Baltimore, Md., died Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at Long View Nursing Home in Manchester, Md.

She was born Feb. 23, 1919 in Boone, N.C., to the late Adam Monroe Hodges and Addie Belle Brown Hodges.

Mrs. Crowe was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, M. Anglee Crowe Mandish and husband, John, of Hampstead, Md. and Martha M. Crowe Przybylski and husband, Lawrence, of Hampstead, Md.; two sons, James A. Crowe of Dundalk, Md., and Roby “Butch” C. Crowe and wife, Lise, of Glen Burnie, Md.; granddaughters, Karen Bullard, Deborah Crowe, and Kelli Edwards; grandsons, Michael Mandish, Larry Przybylski, Jr., and Lance Edwards; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam Monroe Hodges and Addie Belle Brown Hodges; and her husband, Van Albert Crowe.

Services were conducted Friday morning, Sept. 1, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Eline Funeral Home, with Pastor Chris Brammer officiating. Burial followed in Gardens of Faith in Baltimore, Md. The family received friends Friday morning from 9-11 a.m. at Eline Funeral Home.

Una Love Fields

Mrs. Una Love Fields, 80, of Portsmouth, Va., died Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at her home, after a lengthy illness.

Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Schmus and husband, Jim, of Portsmouth, Va.; one son, Gary Fields and wife, Trish, of New Hampshire; two brothers, Howard Love and wife, Gayle, of Boone, and Jim Love and wife, Kathryn, of Blowing Rock; four sisters, Virginia Yates and husband, Albert, of Lenoir, Doris Hodges and husband, Stan, of Tacoma, Wash., Ruth Henson of Blowing Rock, and Jean Perry and husband, Ned, of North Wilkesboro; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Fields; one son, Kent Fields; her parents, Coy and Gladys Hodges Love; and by one sister, Myrtle Schwebirt.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Portsmouth, Va., officiated by Jim Love.

The family received friends Thursday evening from 7-8 p.m. at the Sturtevant Funeral Home in Portsmouth, Va.

Sarah Grace Henville

Sarah Grace Henville, age 18, died August 1, 2006 after several weeks of intensive care for a scalding injury.

She is mourned by her parents, Frances Austin and Rob Crutchfield; her brothers, James and Corwin Henville; her twin sister, Adah Henville; and many other friends and relations. Her life was filled with love and joy, and she was a blessing to everyone who knew her.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 3 at 2 o’clock at the Boone Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Boone, N.C.

Edsel Jackson

Mr. Edsel Jackson, 66, of Ray Brown Road, Boone, died Monday morning, August 28, 2006 at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born in Watauga County, Jan. 11, 1940, a son of the late Thomas and Eudella Brown Jackson. 

Mr. Jackson was a member of Proffit’s Grove Baptist and a former member of the Peacemaker Quartet. He owned and operated the first ambulance service in Watauga County, worked for the Watauga County Sheriff’s Department and was a retired police officer with Watauga Medical Center Police Department. 

Surviving are his wife, Mozella Oxentine Jackson; one son, Dwight Jackson of Wilkesboro; one daughter, Teresa Lawley and husband, Matt, of Boone; three grandsons, Joshua, Jacob and Jackson Lawley, all of Boone; three brothers, Rev. T. J. Jackson and wife, Betty, Frank Jackson and wife, Joyce, and Charlie Jackson, all of Boone; six sisters-in-law; Barbara Jackson, Betty Moretz, and Mancy Setzer, all of Boone; Cora Lee Mills of Marshville; Charlotte Cook and husband, Joe, of Deep Gap;  Allie Wagner and husband, Charles, of Hickory; one brother-in-law, Hade Oxentine and wife, Dot, of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Connie Gilbert; and two brothers, Leflor and Kermit Jackson.

Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Delmar James and the Rev. Gary Shew officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown’s Chapel Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 o’clock until 8:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Colleen Miller

Mrs. Colleen Miller, 74, of Enid, Okla., died Saturday, August 26, 2006, at Highland Park Manor.

She was born Sept. 19, 1931 to Edward J. “Eddie” and Lottie Isabelle Shorter Ryan in Hillsdale, Okla.

Mrs. Miller graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1949 as valedictorian and from St. Anthony’s Nursing School of Oklahoma City in 1952. On September 25, 1954 she married Paul Leon Miller and they were married over 50 years before his death. She retired from nursing in 1991 from St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Enid.  After retirement she enjoyed gardening, housekeeping and especially visiting with family. Mrs. Miller was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Survivors include her son, Randy Miller of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Pam Summers and husband, David, of Valdosta, Ga.; grandchildren, Jared Summers of Raleigh, N.C., Sarah Summers of Oklahoma City; Brian Miller, Katie Miller, and Adam Miller, all of Chicago, Ill.; sisters, Jerry Ryan of Oklahoma City and Norma Taylor of Alexander City, Ala.; mother-in-law, Hazel Miller of Todd, N.C.; sisters-in-law,  Janelle Miller and Peggy Greer, both of Todd, N.C.; and brother-in-law, Ronald Miller of Todd, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Leon Miller; her parents, Eddie and Lottie Ryan; and granddaughter, Stephanie Miller.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 1, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Rev Kevin Ratterman and the Rev Ernest Flusche will officiate. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. A recitation of the rosary was held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home chapel, Thursday evening, August 31,with Pat Molitor officiating. 

Memorials may be made to Hospice Circle of Love or the American Cancer Society with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home as custodian of the funds.

Baxter Lennie Presnell

Mr. Baxter Lennie Presnell, 67, of Medlin Drive, Pickens, S.C., and a former resident of Banner Elk, died Wednesday morning, August 30, 2006 at home. 

He was born in Avery County, Sept. 20, 1938, a son of the late Ed and Nettie Hicks Presnell. 

Mr. Presnell was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Pickens, S.C.  He was a woodcarver and a life member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. 

Survivors include his wife, Reba Presnell; three daughters, Keneika Presnell of Liberty, S.C., Jill Alexander and husband, Keenan, of Pickens, S.C., and Rosanna Chester of Sugar Grove; one son, Baxter Lennie Presnell, Jr. of Liberty, S.C.; three granddaughters, Danielle and Anna Alexander and Brooke Tester; two sisters, Marthanna Ward and husband, David, and Julie Ellen McGrew and husband, Bill, all of Banner Elk. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded and one sister, Saskia Lucille McGrew. 

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Trivette and the Rev. Mike Belcher. Burial will follow in the Hicks family cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon prior to the service from 1 until 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Zelma Townsend Aldridge

Mrs. Zelma Townsend Aldridge, 81, of Troy Road, Hudson, N.C., passed away Monday, August 28, 2006 at the Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.

She was born August 23, 1925 in Watauga County to the late Troy Townsend and the late Ruby Andrews Townsend. 

Mrs. Aldridge was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Leon Aldridge and his wife, Carolyn, of Hudson and Michael Aldridge and his wife, Joy, of Granite Falls; two daughters, Linda Bolick and her husband, Leonard, of Hudson and Kathy Mitchell of Morganton; two brothers, Lester Townsend and Troy Townsend, Jr., both of Hudson; four sisters, Christine Austin of Hudson, Anita Prestwood of Hudson, Rebecca Holman of Granite Falls and Carolyn Thorpe of Hudson. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clell Aldridge; a brother, Spurlin Townsend; and a sister, Lois Herman.

Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, August 29, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Harris Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Caviness officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Bess M. Wilson

Mrs. Bess M. Wilson, 84, of Taylorsville, N.C., died Sunday, August 27, 2006, at her residence.

She was born May 10, 1922 in Watauga County, the daughter of the late Stacy and Sarah Norris Moody.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and was a retired furniture worker.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Wilson and wife, Edith, and Charles Wilson and wife, Vicki, all of Taylorsville; six daughters, Mrs. Sara Teague and husband, Howard; Mary Walker, Mrs. Linda Warren and husband, Henry; Barbara Wilson, Darlene Wilson, and Mrs. Melissa Edwards and husband, Randy, all of Taylorsville; two brothers, B.F. (Pete) Moody of Lenoir and Clay Moody of Vilas; two sisters, Mrs. Jake (Margaret) Eggers of Vilas and Mrs. Dean (Helen) Maye of Taylorsville; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Wilson; two sons, David Lynn (John) Wilson, and an infant; four daughters, twins Brenda Mae Wilson and Glenda Faye Wilson; Mrs. Ruby Little, and Karen Wilson; a brother, Ralph Moody; a granddaughter, Nancy Wilson; a grandson, Robert Allen Warren; and a great-granddaughter, Cevanna Walker.

Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m., August 29, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Safriet and the Rev. Tony Dyson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Violet Miller Cummings Carroll

Mrs. Violet Miller Cummings Carroll, 83, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of West Jefferson, N.C., died Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

She was born June 8, 1923 in Ashe County, to the late Clarence and Carrie McClure Miller. 

Mrs. Carroll loved quilting, crocheting and working in her yard and rose garden. Other activities she enjoyed were yard sales, traveling, fishing, flea markets, cooking and canning.

Survivors include her husband, Eldon Carroll; two daughters, Geraldine Sookhoo and husband, Rudy, of Nashville, Tenn. and Joyce Myers and fiancé, Pete, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Leonard Miller of Wilkesboro, N.C. and Parnell Miller of Millers Creek, N.C.; two sisters,   Daisy Wyatt of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Millie Rose Carlton of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Suzette Hood of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Becky Cummings of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Linda Saye of Atlanta, Ga.;  five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Cummings. 

Services were conducted Saturday morning, August 26, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Deran Wyatt and the Rev. Russell Sheets officiating. Burial followed in the Ebenezer Cemetery.

George Lee Greene Jr.

Mr. George Lee Greene, Jr., 78, of 618 Huntingdon Street, Elon,  died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Friday, August 25, 2006.

A native of Watauga County, he was the husband of Pallie Poplin Greene who survives and the son of George Lee Greene, Sr. and Pearl Leathy Jones Greene, both deceased.

Mr. Greene retired from Southern Bell after 39 years of service.  He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to the wife of the home, survivors include two sons, Mr. Dennis Lee Greene and Mr. Guy Randall Greene, both of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Dallas Greene of Pullman, Washington and Mr. Melvin Greene of Boone; and two grandchildren.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington, conducted by the Rev. Mike Jones. Entombment followed in the Mausoleum at Alamance Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Reed Morris Greene

Mr. Reed Morris Greene, 90, of 4666 Wildcat Road, Deep Gap,  died Friday, August 25, 2006, at Glenbridge Health Care. 

He was born August 13, 1916 in Watauga County, a son of the late Copna H. and Fannie Norris Greene; and the husband of Nellie Fay Greene of the home.

Mr. Greene was a retired farmer and timber cutter and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Surviving other than his wif,e are two daughters, Reba Watson and husband, Sid, of Deep Gap; Marie Trivette and husband, Dwane, of Fleetwood; five sons; Kenneth L. Greene and wife, Sadie, of Deep Gap; Clayton M. Greene and wife, Ailene, of Fleetwood; Rev. Bobby C. Greene and wife, Linda, of Lenoir; Rex H. Greene and wife, Christine, of Deep Gap; Ottis D. Greene and wife, Patti, of Deep Gap; two brothers; Ralph Greene of Triplett, and Buster Greene of Lenoir; three sisters, Mary Archterkichen of Madison, Va., Doris Smith of Lenoir, and Dollie Jordan of Deep Gap; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Earl Greene, Jr.; three sisters, Dennis Payne, Ruth Greene, Bonnie Smith; and one granddaughter, Carolyn Greene.

Services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2006 at Cornerstone Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherrill Welborne, the Rev. Rick Cornejo and the Rev. Randall Greene officiating.  Burial will follow in Mount View Baptist Church Cemetery in Deep Gap.

Oma ‘Pat’ Harmon Mashburn

Mrs. Oma “Pat” Harmon Mashburn, 82, of Hwy. 105 South, Vilas, N.C., died Saturday, August 26, 2006 at Glenbridge Health Care in Boone. 

She was born Dec. 11, 1923 in Cherokee County, N.C., a daughter of the late Mack and Louise White Patterson. 

Mrs. Mashburn had worked as a nurse’s aid with Highland Hall Nursing Home.

She is survived two daughters, Lousie Ward and husband,  Tommy Joe, of Sugar Grove; Glenda Bentley and husband, Dexter, of Vilas; one son, Mack Harman and wife, Marie, of Arizona; two step-sons, Len Mashburn and wife, Linda, of Lexington, N.C.; Clinton Mashburn of Lincolnton, N.C.; eight  grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandhchildren.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lonnie Charles Harmon; her second husband, Jay Mashburn; two sisters, Devada Mae Mashburn and Zona Sherrill; and two brothers, Hubert Patterson and Hillard Patterson.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Zane Tester. Burial will follow in Zion Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hampton Funeral Service on Tuesday from 1-2 p.m., one hour prior to the service.

James Emanuel Teague

Mr. James Emanuel Teague, 80, of Granite Falls, a former resident of Blowing Rock, died Friday, August 25, 2006, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir.

He was born June 13, 1926 in Watauga County, a son of the late Moses and Ella Nora Church Teague.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted 4:00 p.m., Monday, August 28, 2006 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Butler officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:30-4 p.m., prior to the service.
