Martins come from athletic family

Fans of Watauga football and baseball teams better get used to hearing the name “Martin” during this upcoming school year. No less than three Martins — senior twins Caleb, Tanner and sophomore Baine Martin — play varsity football for the Pioneers this fall. Caleb and Tanner played varsity baseball last year. This spring, they might be joined by Baine, who played on his older brother’s summer team.

Watauga’s football team got off to a fast start last Friday with its 35-9 win over West Caldwell. Maintaining that momentum will be key this Friday night when they play at Hibriten.

PHILADELPHIA — Appalachian State junior running back Kevin Richardson and senior defensive end Marques Murrell have been named to the initial watch lists for the 2006 Walter Payton and Buck Buchanan Awards, The Sports Network announced  Wednesday.

Fleming wins match at No. 1 singles

For four years, Anna Lee Evans played No. 1 singles for Watauga’s girls’ tennis team. Brianna Fleming may not win a singles state championship like Evans did last year, but the new No. 1 singles player at Watauga is off to a fast start. Fleming cruised past South Caldwell’s Tiffany Rush 6-1, 6-2 Tuesday at the Carroll Complex.

Pioneers slip by Patriots

MORGANTON — Samantha Ryan and Eileen Purpur led Watauga’s girls’ golf team to a victory over Freedom in a dual golf match Wednesday at Mimosa Hills Country Club. Watauga finished with a 94 while Freedom shot a 98. The scores from the top two players were used.

ASU hosts tournament

Anybody who follows Appalachian State’s volleyball team might want to stay in town this weekend, since the Mountaineers won’t be playing at home any time soon after. Appalachian State hosts the Mast General Store Appalachian Classic this weekend, playing Marshall Friday night and both Middle Tennessee and Radford the following day.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Appalachian State incoming freshman Wes Hobson was among 116 players to be named 2006 Louisville Slugger High School All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball magazine earlier this summer.

Local driver enjoys success at track

John Eller, Jr., knew the first time he saw a car race that he had to try it for himself. It was at the Boone Fairgrounds and Eller felt the excitment that car racing can bring. So when he went back, he went back in a 1971 Chevelle. It was the car that he drove to work, except he modified to race in the V-8 Modified division.

Often times, competitors will try to practice against the best to improve their skills. Appalachian State’s Matt Isenhour and Marques Murrell have no choice in the matter. Isenhour, the Mountaineers’ right tackle, and Murrell, ASU’s left defensive end, square off against each other every day in practice.

Watauga runner scores five TDs

GAMEWELL — The new one-back offense seems to suit Watauga running back Eric Breitenstein just fine.  Breitenstein, Watauga’s “A” back, scored five touchdowns in the Pioneers 35-9 pasting of West Caldwell Friday night. Breitenstein scored touchdown runs of 10, 7, 9, 25 and 21 yards and helped the Pioneers take a 21-7 halftime lead that was never seriously threatened.

ASU shakes up depth chart

Appalachian State’s football team celebrated when two-a-days ended Friday. Saturday afternoon, the Mountaineers played their final big scrimmage in front of about 7,500 of their closest friends, who attended Fan Fest at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
