Edith Faye Townsend Arnett

Mrs. Edith Faye Townsend Arnett, 85, of Banner Elk, N.C., died Monday, August 21, 2006, at Life Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late Johnny Townsend and Neomia (Arnett) Townsend. 

Mrs. Arnett was a homemaker and member of the Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church. 

Survivors include sons, Hoyle Arnett of Morganton, Doyle Arnett and his wife, Rachel, of Morganton, Lloyd Arnett and his wife, Pat, of Morganton, Billy Arnett and his wife, Wilma Dean, of Marion, Jimmy Arnett and his wife, Carolyn Sue, of Banner Elk, Larry Arnett and his wife, Patty, of Banner Elk, Ronnie Arnett and his wife, Annie, of Banner Elk; daughters, Joyce Ruppard and her husband, C.W., of Banner Elk, Patsy Rupard of Banner Elk, Dorothy Jean Nelson and her husband, Russ, of Morganton; brothers and sisters, Mabel Ramsey of Banner Elk, Homer Townsend of Lenoir; 32 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Arnett; and a sister, Dovie Townsend.

Services were conducted Thursday morning, August 24, at 11:00 a.m., from the Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church with the Rev. Junior Carver and Charles Hindman officiating. Interment followed in White Rock Cemetery in Banner Elk.

Stacy Bruce Bowers

Mr. Stacy Bruce Bowers, 43, of Boone, N.C., formerly of Adams, Okla., died  Thursday, August 17, 2006.

He was born June 1, 1963 in Guymon, Okla., to Wayne and Evelyn Bowers of rural Turpin, Okla. 

Mr. Bowers attended Adams grade school and graduated from Turpin High School. He moved to Tampa, Fla., where he worked for several years and mastered the skill of marble and granite installation. He later moved to Boone, N.C. and continued in his trade. He loved the Boone area where he lived until his death.

Survivors include his daughter, Mikayla Nicole Bowers and  a granddaughter, Aliyah Nikole Bowers, both of Baker, Okla.; parents, Wayne and Evelyn Bowers of rural Turpin; two sisters, Kris Rider and husband, Bart, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Amy Tharp and husband, Jeff, of Ripley, Okla.; two brothers, Bret Bowers and wife, Nora, and Kelly Bowers, all of Baker; four nieces; four nephew; extended family; and a host of friends. 

 Memorial services will be Monday morning, August 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the Turpin Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Reed, pastor, officiating. 

Memorials may be given to the Art Hallett Prison Ministry, P.O. Box 668, Sarasota, FL. 34230 or a charity of choice. Memorials may be forwarded to Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, Box 1306, Guymon, OK  73942. 

Local arrangements are under the care of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon. Cremation services were by Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in Boone, N.C.

Dorothy Jean West Foster

Mrs. Dorothy Jean West Foster, 73, of Auburn, Wash., died August 18, 2006.

She was born Sept. 24, 1932, in Boone, N.C., to the late Mr. and Mrs. R.L. West.

Mrs. Foster was a school bus driver for the Auburn School District. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, traveling in the motor home, crossword puzzles, rubber stamping, and loved her dachshunds, Nikki and Wasabi.

Survivors include her husband, Floyd C. Foster; sons, Floyd C. Foster, Jr. of Puyalllup, Wash., Steve Foster of Buckley, Wash.., Randy Foster of Greenbank, Wash., John Foster of Puyallup, Wash. and Jeff Foster of Madison, Ala.; daughters, Debbie Kirkman of Vancouver, Wash., Denise Davis of Pacific, Wash., and Carolyn Dennis of Lake Tapps, Wash.; brothers, Ed West of Ellensburg, Wash. and Paul West of Ellensburg, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. West; and her brothers, Max, Robert and Herbert West.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, August 26, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Price Helton Funeral Home, 702 Auburn Way North, Auburn, Wash.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Jose Juan “J.J.” Nava Roa

Mr. Jose Juan “J.J.” Nava Roa, 18, of 140 Old Bristol Road, Boone, died Thursday, August 17, 2006, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

He was born Jan. 11, 1988 in Mexico City, Mexico, a son of Jose Nava Cuellar of Mexico and Silvia Roa de Nava of the home. He was a student at Watauga High School.

In addition to his father and mother, he is survived by one sister, Thelma Nava Roa, and one brother, Rogelio Nava Roa, both of Mexico; and two aunts, Reina Roa Gomez and Francisca Roa Gomez, both of Boone.

Memorial services will be conducted Monday evening, August 28, 2006, at 7 o’clock, at the Watauga High School Auditorium. Officiating will be the Rev. Allan Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the mother, Silvia Gomez, 140 Old Bristol Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Hubert Philmore Whitley

Mr. Hubert Philmore Whitley, 87, of Albemarle, N.C. and Valle Crucis, N.C., died Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 26, 1919 in Stanly County, N.C.

Mr. Whitley worked for Cannon Mills in Salisbury, N.C., and farmed. He was a member of Clark’s Creek Baptist Church in Valle Crucis.

Survivors include two sons, Lane Whitley of Denton, N.C. and Boyd Whitley of Banner Elk, N.C.; six daughters, Geraldine Whitley Wilhoit of Conway, S.C., Lorene Whitley File of Salisbury, N.C., Carlene Whitley Brady of Salisbury, N.C., Christine Whitley Dyson of Mocksville, N.C., Josephine Whitley Bunton of Banner Elk, N.C., and Elvene Whitley Tester of Banner Elk, N.C.; one brother, Norman Whitley of Seagrove, N.C.; two sisters, Jerri Walker of Asheboro, N.C. and Jennie Belle Walker of Seagrove, N.C.; 26 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Jane Freeman Whitley; and his parents, William C. and Flora Crowell Whitley.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon, August 25, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the Hartsell Funeral Home Lefler Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Canton Baptist Church Cemetery in Albemarle, N.C.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 12:30-2 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the services.

Charles William Arnette

Mr. Charles William Arnette, age 76, of Pleasant Hill Road, Lenoir, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006 in Gaston Memorial Hospital. 

A native of Caldwell County, Mr. Arnette was a son of the late Claude Bynum and Alice Victoria Carter Arnette and the husband of Audrey Ragan Arnette of the home.

Mr. Arnette had worked for Broyhill Furniture for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Ragan Arnette;  three daughters, Judy Curtis of Lenoir; Linda Duckett and husband, Vernon, of Asheville; Mary Alice Harding and husband, Troy, of Lenoir; two step-daughters, Loretta Martin and husband, Lonnie, and Belinda Turbyfill, all of Stanley, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Billings and Virginia Pearson, both of Lenoir; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 1 step-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Sutton Arnette; two sons, Charles Arnette, Jr. and Jimmy Arnette; and one daughter, Betty; seven brothers, Joseph, Howard, Lewis, Willard, Junior, Claude and Lawrence Arnette; and two sisters, Elsie Nichols and Carrie Mace.

Graveside services were conducted Sunday afternoon, August 20, 2006, at 2 p.m. in Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir with the Rev. Ed Greene officiating.

Mary Kendall Cook

Mrs. Mary Kendall Cook,  86, of Boone, died Saturday, August 19, 2006 in Britthaven Nursing Care in Wilkesboro.

She was born July 8, 1920 in Watauga County, a daugther of the late Squire Bynum and Blanche Edmisten Greene, and the wife of the late Charles Boyd Cook, Sr.

Mrs. Cook was a member of Boone Advent Christian Church and retired owner/operator of Perkinsville Grocery.

She is survived by her son, Charles Boyd “Bob” Cook and wife, Ann, of Boone; two granddaughters, Debra Critcher and husband, Randy, of Boone and Palm Coast, Fla.; and Melissa Moody and husband, Rob, of Hickory; five great-grandchildren, Cody Ryan Critcher, Ethan Nick Critcher and Madison Elizabeth Critcher, all of Boone and Palm Coast, Fla.; and Michael Robert Moody and Morgan Lynn Moody, both of Hickory; one sister, Georgia Greene Ray of Deep Gap; and one brother, Conley Greene of Boone.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Lottie Edmisten Greene; and one brother, Waitstle Hoye Greene.

Services were conducted Sunday evening, August 20, 2006 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Noble officiating. A private burial will take place on Monday in the Hodges Cemetery in the Sands Community of Boone.

Margaret Hampton Elrod

Mrs. Margaret Hampton Elrod, 88, of 198 Will Cook Road, Boone, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born May 12, 1918 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Jesse Amos and Vertie Harrison Hampton.

Mrs. Elrod was a retired plant worker from TRW in Boone, and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha Eggers and husband, Charles, of Boone; one son, Joseph Elrod and wife, Eileen, of Sparta; one sister, Ivadene Hampton of Boone; two grandsons, Dean Eggers and wife, Robin, of Wytheville, Va. and David Eggers and wife, Susan, of Hickory; and two great-grandsons, Harrison and Elliott Eggers, both of Hickory. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfonso Elrod; and three sisters, Glenda Story, Gladys Brown, and Winifred Hampton.

Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, August 19, 2006, at 2 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with Pastor Allan Blume and the Rev. Bud Russell officiating. Burial followed in Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Building Fund, 3505 Bamboo Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Dacy Devada Turnmire

Dacy Devada Turnmire, age 67, of Lenoir, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006.

  A native of the Sampson Community of Watauga County, Miss Turnmire was a daughter of the late George Wesley and Roxie Ann Hall Turnmire.

She is survived by two sisters, Doris Nelson and Della Oliver, both of Lenoir; 17 nieces and nephews; 40 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 34 great-great nieces and great-great nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Duel “Pete” Turnmire and Dallas Turnmire; two sisters, Delma King and Dorothy Curtis; and four nephews and two nieces.

Services were conducted Saturday morning at 11 a.m., August 19, 2006, at Indian Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Gibson and the Rev. Keith Edmisten officiating. Burial followed in Wildwood Cemetery.
