Max George Stein
Mr. Max George Stein, 86, of 274 Archie Carroll Road, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, August 10, 2006, at his residence, with his loving wife Micki by his side.
He was a devoted husband, father, brother and son, loved by all who knew him. In his last days he wanted to make sure that his family and friends knew how much living in Boone had come to mean to him. Since 1971, the people, the mountains, the Farmer’s Market and picnics on the Blue Ridge were a great joy to him. In this last year to sit on the deck and listen to the song of the wind in the trees and feel the breeze of the mountain air on his face – those were the gifts he most cherished next to Micki, his family, and of course his dog Oscar.
Mr. Stein’s life was filled with many special experiences from his youth into his college years at Indiana University, and then of course meeting Micki during World War II. He was an accountant by profession and one of the early Florida CPAs. He was a sportsman loving tennis, golf, and of course having season tickets for years to both the Miami Hurricanes and the Miami Dolphins. He was fondly known as “Little Daddy” when he bought a boat for the family and fished side by side with the “Big Daddy”, Lew Goodman. In his retirement Mr. Stein discovered he had a wonderful talent for water color painting, taking classes and producing many wonderful pieces. His love for the family home in Boone, Shayna Ridge, can be seen in the rock walls he built. His flower garden areas were designed for his special Micki to fill with a pallet of colors.
He was always there for friends and family, a more devoted husband could not be found. His love for his dogs was notorious and his most recent best friend, Oscar, was always at his side. He will be missed and remembered by many. In his “Journal”, written through the years, he wrote, “This autobiography is difficult to end but I’ll start by saying that it’s been a good life. All I know is with it all; it was one life very well worth living.”
Survivors include his wife, Miriam “Micki” Stein; one daughter, Debra “Deb” Sprague and husband, Kirk, of Jackson, Wyoming; two sons, Jonathan M. Stein and wife, Ann, of Charleston, S.C., and Robert D. Stein and wife, Leslie, of Plantation, Fla.; two brothers, Marvin Stein of Boone, and Alan Stein of Boca Raton, Fla.; one sister, Mildred Draizar and husband, Paul, of Homestead, Fla.; three grandsons, Adam Stein and wife, Michelle, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Daniel Stein and fiancee, Gina Civin, of San Diego, Calif., and Josh Faulds of Jackson,Wyoming; three granddaughters, Becca Stein and husband, Karim Hiouel, of Chicago, Ill., Julie Maglio and husband, Rocco, of Melborne, Fla., and Jenny Stein of San Diego, Calif.; one step-granddaughter, Larissa Sprague Christian and husband, Jarad, of Jackson, Wyoming; one step-grandson, Gabe Sprague of Lincoln, Neb.; and three great-grandchildren, Maleah Stein, Hanna Maglio, and Jacob Christian.
