It's that time again

Around 4,400 students were expected to return to county schools on Thursday.

The school calendar for all of 2006-07 can be viewed on the Watauga County Schools Web site at www.watauga.k12.nc.us.

County will operate auto tag office

   Watauga County has agreed to open its own tag office after the state Division of Motor Vehicles approved its application (DMV).
    The county has agreed to lease space across from the courthouse in downtown Boone to serve as the new tag office, which will culminate a year-long battle with the state after the former tag office was closed.

ASU alum returns for Summer Reading

 Appalachian State University is bringing back one of its own as part of the summer reading program and Watauga County’s library program.

This year the featured selection is “Freakonomics,” by Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, billed as a look at “the hidden side of everything” from an economist’s point of view.

  County passes windmill rules

Watauga County now has the state’s first ordinance regulating wind energy systems, which could serve as a model for such ordinances in other counties.
Planning director Joe Furman presented the ordinance with few changes, clarifying the definition of small wind energy systems on farms, adding the county attorney’s legal opinion on how the state’s ridge law applies to wind energy systems, and how the county’s high-impact, land-use ordinance applies to the ordinance.

Watauga County has announced the purchase of one small piece of the Watauga High School puzzle, agreeing to buy five acres on the edge of the proposed site in Boone.

NEWS BRIEFS

First day of school is Aug.10

    The first day of the 2006-’07 school year for the Watauga County Schools will be Thursday, Aug. 10. It will be a regular, full-length school day.

Regular bus routes will run, lunch will be served, and the after-school program will be open to children registered in the program.

Incoming freshmen at Watauga High School will have a day of orientation from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
