I woke up in a cold sweat.  It was more of a premonition than a true, blood-curdling nightmare. Oprah — before SlimFast — grabbed that insane monkey Tom Cruise by the throat, yanked him off the coach and swallowed him whole. As she opened her mouth to emit what I expected to be a monstrous belch, the crowd fell silent in anticipation. But instead of the roar that was supposed to issue from her lungs, a beautiful melody filled the room and brought me to my knees.

Gurganus takes flight one more time before USC

Just one last hurrah.  Sallie Gurganus is headed to one last competition as a high schooler. After winning her fifth state championship in the pole vault — between indoor and outdoor track — and earning Watauga High School’s Hall of Fame Award, which is given to the top senior female athlete, she will attend the Nike Outdoor Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T Friday.
