Rea wins Watauga 5K River Run road race

VALLE CRUCIS — Pete Rae won the Watauga River Run 5K held Saturday.

Rae turned in a time of 17 minutes, 9 seconds, four seconds faster than runner-up Rodney Jackson. Zika Palmer was third with a 17:44 and Clint Proudy was

fourth with a time of 17:56. John Quindry rounded out the final five with a time of 18:12.

The race is held in memory of Gwen Tyrie, a former third-grade teacher at Blowing Rock Elementary who was an active runner as well as in memory of Andy Palmer, who was a senior writer for Running Times and owner and director of Blowing Rock’s ZAP Fitness.
