WHS grid team, baseball great honored
The 2006 class of the Watauga Sports Hall of Fame has a distinct 70s look to it.
Three of those selected to this year’s class — Danny Triplett, Jon Steinbrecher and Steve Breitenstein, have ties to the 1978 Watauga state 3-A championship team. In fact, the ’78 Pioneers are the special award winners.

A unique experience

Rea wins Watauga 5K River Run road race
VALLE CRUCIS — Pete Rea won the Watauga River Run 5K held Saturday. Rea turned in a time of 17 minutes, 9 seconds, four seconds faster than runner-up Rodney Jackson. Zika Palmer was third with a 17:44 and Clint Proudy was fourth with a time of 17:56. John Quindry rounded out the final five with a time of 18:12.
The race is held in memory of Gwen Tyrie, a former third-grade teacher at Blowing Rock Elementary who was an active runner as well as in memory of Andy Palmer, who was a senior writer for Running Times and owner and director of Blowing Rock’s ZAP Fitness.
