ASU intern improves Pioneers’ conditioning
There’s no shame in getting a butt-whooping from a 5-foot-7, 130-pound woman. Not if it makes for better football players when the fall rolls around. That’s the prevailing attitude at Watauga High School these days. Second-year grad student Katie Sanders is interning as a strength and conditioning coach with the Pioneers until August and helping to whip them into shape.

Tough act to follow
GREENSBORO — In an unusual end to the season, Watauga sent a limited contingent to the state meet, but every Pioneer athlete that competed, scored. Four Watauga athletes traveled to the NCHSAA 4-A Track and Field Championships Saturday at North Carolina A&T and all four placed. Among them, Sallie Gurganus took her usual spot at the top, winning a third outdoor pole vault championship, fifth overall (including two indoor titles) and setting a new state record.

Providence girls’ soccer coach Jeff Mercado may have had an unfair advantage when it came to receiving a scouting report on Watauga. Myers Park coach Bucky McCarley, whose team lost to Watauga in the second round of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs, is Mercado’s roommate in Charlotte.

ASU ready for ‘Cats
It may not seem like much to some, but it is a big deal to Appalachian State’s baseball team.
Appalachian State needed to win just one game to assure itself an eighth-place finish out of 11 teams in the Southern Conference this year. The Mountaineers achieved that by winning two games Saturday.
