Harold R. McCroskey

Mr. Harold R. McCroskey, 86, of 1501 Land Harbor, Newland, died Wednesday evening, May 10, 2006, at the Watauga Medical Center.

Born May 21, 1919 in Rockingham, N.C., Mr. McCroskey was a son of the late Martha Ellen Hicks McCroskey and Robert Emmitt McCroskey. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and a member of the board of advisors. He was a member of the Avery County Kiwanis Club, drove Meals on Wheels, worked with the Avery County Senior Citizens Center and Habitat for Humanity.

He was a member of Aaron Baptist Church and served on the board of directors for the POA of Linville Land Harbors.

Mr. McCroskey is survived by two daughters, Dr. Lenora E. McCroskey and husband, Channing Prothro, of Denton, Texas, and Patricia M. Holmes and husband, Edward, of Chapin, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Crosby “Jenks” Allen of Yaupon Beach, N.C.; and two brothers-in-law, Robert P. Allen and wife, Sarah, of Greenville, S.C., and Dr. Alton W. Greenlaw of Winston-Salem. Three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Allen McCroskey; one son, Harold M. McCroskey; one sister, Ruby Greenlaw; and two brothers, Robert and Audrey McCroskey.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Aaron Baptist Church in Montezuma. Officiating will be the Rev. Dennis Aldridge and the Rev. Brent Price.

The family will receive friends following the service, at the church.

Jack J. Roark

Mr. Jack J. Roark, 65, of 103 Rominger St., Boone, died Wednesday night, May 24, 2006, at the Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Roark was born May 10, 1941 in Watauga County, a son of the late Russell John and Jeanette Johnson Roark. He was a retired custom muffler specialist and a member of the Boone Advent Christian Church.

He was a member of the Boone Fire Department for 29 years and a former fire chief for 10 years.

Mr. Roark is survived by his wife, Becky Russell Roark of the home; one daughter, Kathy Brown, and husband, Randy, of Zionville; one son, Steve Roark, and wife, Stephanie, of Hermitage, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Brook Matheson of Zionville; one grandson, Russell Brown of Zionville; two sisters, Marie Cole and husband, Tommy, of Hudson and Linda Harmon and husband, Tommy, of Sugar Grove; two brothers, Russell “J.R.” Roark of Belleville, Ill., and Dale Roark and wife, Lillie, of Boone; and by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at the Advent Christian Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 until 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Gordon Noble and the Rev. Bud Russell. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service.

Martha Louise Evans Scroggs

Mrs. Martha Louise Evans Scroggs,  78, of Brookside Drive, Boone, died Monday morning, May 22, 2006 at home. 

Born in Whiteville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Rufus Edward and Laura Teachy Evans. 

Mrs. Scroggs was a graduate of Wilson High School and Goldsboro School of Nursing. 

She was a registered nurse, having worked for Blowing Rock Hospital, Watauga Medical Center and retiring from  the Watauga Surgical Group after 27 years.  Martha was a member of Boone Advent Christian Church. 

Surviving are: two sons, Gales W. Scroggs III and wife, Debbie, of Fort Mill, S.C., and Eddie Scroggs and wife, Kathy, of Boone; three grandchildren, Kristi, Kelly and Gales Scroggs IV; and one sister, Bettye Evans Breedlove, and husband, William, of Raleigh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gales W. Scroggs Jr., and her parents, Rufus Edward and Laura Teachy Evans. 

Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at 11 at the Boone Advent Christian Church.  Officiating was the Rev. Gordon Noble.  Entombment  followed at the Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boone Advent Christian Church, in care of Joyce Sherrill, 375 Shady Bark Lane, Boone, N.C. 28607, or to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

In addition, the Scroggs family has established the Martha Scroggs Memorial Nursing Scholarship at Watauga High School.

Bonnie Greene Smith

Mrs. Bonnie Greene Smith, 77, of High Point, a former resident of E. Kivette Drive,  went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, May 23, 2006.

Mrs. Smith was born in Watauga County July 27, 1928, a daughter of Copna and Fannie Norris Greene. She retired from the Blacksmith Shop and was a member of Friendly Baptist Church. She loved her family and many friends and enjoyed crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vaughn D. Smith, and two sisters, Ruth Greene and Dennis Payne.

Surviving are a son, Robert Smith, and his wife, Brenda, of Louisville, Ky., a daughter, Brenda Mills and her husband, Kenneth, of High Point: three brothers, Ralph Greene and Reed Greene, both of Boone, and Buster Greene of Lenoir; three sisters, Dolly Jordan of Stony Fork, Doris Smith of Lenoir and Mary Achperkirchen of Madison County; six grandchildren, Daphene Surrett and her husband, Johnny, of Matthews, Janice Mills of Trinity, Lavon Hines and her husband, Terry, of Greensboro, Michelle Terry and her husband, Jason, of High Point, Tiffany Smith of Louisville and Holly Crawford and her husband, Sean, of Shepherdsville, Ky.; four great-grandchildren, Wade Hines, Caleb Crawford, and Jackson and Jasey Terry; and “adopted” granddaughter, April Stone of Trinity.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at Stony Fork Church in Watauga County by pastor Vernon Eller, pastor Roy Smith and pastor Gary Watson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church Friday from 1 until 2 p.m.

Eugene  Gene Bentley

Eugene Gene Bentley, 65, of Collettsville Road, Lenoir, died Friday, May 19, 2006 at his residence.

He was born Nov. 2, 1940 in Caldwell County to the late Daisy Bentley Helton. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his first spouse, Pauline Phillips Bentley.

Mr. Bentley was a member of The House of Prayer Baptist Church.

Survivors include: a son, Eldon Paul Bentley of Lenoir; a brother, Gary Helton, and wife, Beverly, of Morganton; a sister, Mary Sanders, and husband, Harvey Ray, of Lenoir;  and one granddaughter, Paula Bentley of Lenoir.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at the Pendry’s Chapel, with the Rev. Leonard Younce officiating. Burial  followed in the Boone's Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Watauga County

Serving as pallbearers were Tim Austin, Keith Berry, James Austin, Garland Beaver, Harvey Ray Sander and Gary Helton Jr.

Leon S. Gillin

Leon S. Gillin, of 171 China Creek Road, Blowing Rock, ended his earthly pilgrimage in the early hours of Saturday, May 20, 2006, the day following his 77th birthday.

The death occurred during the four-day Lenoir-Rhyne College's annual Great Books convocation at the Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland. He was participating in the program as a guest of his brother and sister-in-law, Emmanuel and Helen Gillin of Hickory.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1218 Main St., Blowing Rock, with the Rev. Larry Lyon presiding.

Visitation with the family and friends will take place an hour earlier, between 10 and 10:50 a.m. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be offered to Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Gillin was born in Radose, Poland, to American missionary parents directing a Baptist theological school in a suburb of Warsaw. His primary schooling was in a boarding school in England,  with secondary education at the Ben Lippen Boys School in Asheville.

He was a graduate of Duke University and of the DePaul Law School of Chicago.

Upon further graduate study at Northwestern University, and passing the Illinois bar examination, he practiced law in Chicago for several decades, mainly as a trial lawyer in civil cases, while residing in Highland Park, Ill.

Leon and Bunny Gillin moved to their newly built home in Blowing Rock three years ago. They forthwith joined the fellowship of Rumple Memorial Church.

In his new location, Gillin became active in several Bible study programs, including the Talmud Torah Bible Class of Temple Beth Shalom in Hickory.

Earlier in life, Gillin served with the U.S. army occupation force in France during the years following World War II. He was an active member of the Masonic Order.

His great love affairs, other than the family and jurisprudence, were with the North Carolina mountains, Russian culture and language, including intimate contacts with Russian-speaking evangelical circles in America and abroad, serious biblical studies, a daily routine of solving crossword puzzles and working in his carpentry shop.

Gillin left behind him is loving wife of 54 years and three daughters, Lisa Braun with her husband, Marty, of Inverness, Ill., and their sons, Nicolas, Alexander and Benjamin; Julie Gillin, with her husband, Arne, and son, Bjorn, of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Margot T. Joy Gillin, with daughter, Zoe Esther, of Waukegan, Ill.

Also surviving Gillin are a sister, Vera Stoehr of Waukegan, Ill., brother H. Joseph Gillin, with wife, Val, of Woodstock, Ill., and brother Emmanuel Gillin, with wife, Helen.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Moses and Clara, and an older sister, Fania Suess.

Charles Henry Ogilvie

Mr. Charles Henry Ogilvie,  79, of Boone,  passed away on Monday, May 22, 2006, at the Watauga Medical Center.

Charles was born in Sanford, Fla., on Aug. 15, 1926 to Judge Claude and Ethel Ogilvie.

He attended Landon High School in Jacksonville, Marion Institute, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy.

He and his wife of 44 years, Jeanne Edsell Ogilvie, and his son, Chuck, moved to Winter Park in 1962.

Charles was executive vice-president of the Industrial Development Corporation of Florida, was a member of Rotary International, the Orlando Country Club and active in the Winter Park YMCA building campaign.

Charles and Jeanne retired to Boone in 1991.

Mr. Charles Henry Ogilvie is survived by his wife, Jeanne, of Boone; one son, Chuck, and wife, Nonie Ogilvie, of Winter Park, Fla.; one sister, Claudette, and husband, Robert French, of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and one brother, Morgan and wife, Lee, Ogilvie of Jacksonville, Fla.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Aileen Virginia  Hughes VonCanon

Aileen Hughes VonCanon, former first lady of Banner Elk, died Thursday, May 18, 2006, as a result of a stroke.

She was born March 11, 1917, in Cranberry, N.C., to Donald Horton and Margaret Ashley Hughes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Banner VonCanon; sister, Clara Burleson; and brothers, Horton, Fred, Pat  and Bob Hughes.

Aileen was a graduate of Lees McRae College and Appalachian State Teacher's College with a degree in music education. She was an elder in the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church and a member of Eastern Star.

Her many achievements include: teaching music and church pianist; bringing the N.C. Little Symphony to Avery County; business manager of several businesses; and past editor of the Avery Journal. She served on the Tri-County library board and the LMC FORUM board.

She was a charter member of the Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce and the Banner Elk Historical Society.

Aileen is survived by two sons, Charles Banner VonCanon Jr. and William Hughes VonCanon and their wives, Pamela and Patricia. She was blessed with six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 27, at 2 p.m.  The family will receive family and friends downstairs in the church immediately after the service.

As Aileen held so many charities in her heart, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends remember her with a donation to a charity of their choice.

Byron Richard Callahan

Mr. Byron Richard Callahan, 18, of Heather Street, Boone, died Tuesday evening, May 16, 2006. 

He was born in Asheville, the son of Teresa Love Callahan and Richard Callahan. 

Byron graduated from Watauga High School with honors in 2005, and was a rising sophomore at the Art Institute of California, San Francisco. He was an avid soccer player and coached recreational soccer. 

Surviving are his mother, Teresa  L. Callahan of Boone; his father, Richard Callahan of Boone; and one sister, Katie Callahan of Boston; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Joyce Love of Pilot Mountain; his paternal grandmother, Lois Callahan of New Jersey; an uncle, Brent Love of Winston-Salem; and two nephews, Nathan Love and Peer Mugnier, both of Blacksburg, Va.

A Celebration of Life was held Sunday afternoon, May 21, at 4 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Marianne Romanat.  A reception followed the service in the Family Life Center of Boone United Methodist Church. 

The family suggests memorials to Faith Bridge United Methodist Church Building Fund, Post Office Box 2308, Blowing Rock, N.C. 28605 or to the Watauga County Humane Society, 200 Casey Lane, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Eileen Violet Gragg

Mrs. Eileen Violet Gragg, 88, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Lehigh Regional Hospital.

Surviving are two sons: Horton Gragg Jr. of Okeechobee, Fla., and Nicholas Gregg of West Lake Village, Fla. 

Graveside services and burial for Mrs. Eileen Violet Gragg will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens, officiated by the Rev. James D. Hagaman.

Joshua Chilo Freeman

Mr. Joshua Chilo Freeman, 24, of Rom Eller Road, Ferguson, died Thursday, May 18, 2006.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel in North Wilkesboro, with the Rev. David Hibbard and the Rev. Allen Marsh officiating.

Mr. Freeman was born Jan. 24, 1982, in Wilkes County, to Allan and Yvonne Greene Freeman. He worked for K&D Construction and was a member of Cross Fire United Methodist Church.

He is survived by: three children, Daniel Steven Clark and Destiny Elise Freeman, both of Wilkesboro, and Joshua Chilo Layden Freeman of Deep Gap; his mother, Yvonne Eller, and husband, Tom, of Ferguson; his father, Allan Freeman, and wife, Wanda, of North Wilkesboro; three sisters, Diana Medley and Ellen Holland, both of Ferguson, and Miranda Garris of Wilkesboro; two brothers, Thomas Eller Jr. of Ferguson and Kris Tharpe of Wilkesboro; his maternal grandparents, C.J. and Helen Greene of Wilkesboro; his paternal grandparents, Jimmy and Marie Freeman of North Wilkesboro; his great-grandparents, Carl Faw of Wilkesboro; and stepgrandparents, Clate and Jean Eller of Ferguson.

The family received friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

Grady I. Norris

Mr. Grady I. Norris, 86, of 1879 Aho Road, Boone, died Saturday, May 20, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

Born Oct. 3, 1919, Mr. Norris was a native of Watauga County and a son of the late Everett Crawford and Harriet Clawson Norris.

Mr. Norris was of the Methodist faith, a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and retired from Blowing Rock Golf and Country Club in the golf course maintenance. He was a member of the Blowing Rock American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Fannie Green Norris of the home; one son, Ray Norris, and wife, Chris, of Boone; two sisters, Mrs. Beulah Storie and Mrs. Ruby Hampton, both of Boone; one brother, Tracy Norris, and wife, Ruby, of Boone; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Annie Watts, Orphie Potter and Bertie Hampton; and four brothers, Russell, Allie, Grant and Reid Norris.

Graveside services were conducted Sunday, May 21, at 4 p.m. at the Ford Family Cemetery by Dr. Dan Featherstone. Services included military honors. The family  received friends at the home of their son, Ray, and wife, Chris Norris, 1881 Aho Road, Boone.

Deborah  ‘Debbie’ Potter Price

Mrs. Deborah “Debbie” Potter Price, 45, of Spencer Street, Lenoir, died Sunday May 21, 2006, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Price was born March 5, 1961 in Watauga County.

She was a secretary for 28 years with Broyhill Pacemaker and attended the House of Prayer Baptist Church.

Mrs. Price is survived by her husband, Steven Allen Price, of the home; three sons, Richard “Jason” Potter and wife, Jullie, Jeremy Potter and Alex Price, all of Lenoir; her mother, Sally Potter Dishman, one brother, Billy Potter, two sisters, Patty Kale and husband, Stanley, Sherry Price and husband, David, and one granddaughter, Logan Potter, all of Lenoir.

She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Hoover Potter.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pendry’s Funeral Home Chapel in Lenoir. The body will lie in state from noon until 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Leonard Younce and the Rev. James Wilfong. Burial will follow in Zack’s Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stan Kale, Johnny Price, David Price, Steve Greer, Tim Burchette and Doug Winkler. Honorary pallbearers will be Dusty and Billy Potter and Tony Miller.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Carolyn Flora Banks Ryberg

Carolyn Flora Banks Ryberg, 71, of Ivy Terrace Drive, Boone, died Saturday morning, May 20, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center. 

Born in Middlesex County, Mass., she was a daughter of Evelyn Grace Dickie and the late Russell Everett Banks.  Carolyn was a homemaker.

Surviving are: two daughters, Karin Boyer and husband, Donald, of Lincolnton, Kristen Hall and husband, Russell, of Boone; one son, Kirt Ryberg, and wife, Evelyn, of Perry, Ga.; five grandchildren, Karina VanKlingeren, Erika Dean, Miranda Croxton, Nicholas Ryberg and Josiah Mergele; three great-grandchildren; her mother, Evelyn Grace Dickie of Malden, Mass.; one sister, Virginia Evelyn Walsh of Rochester, N.Y.; and one brother, Waldo Banks, and wife, Jan, of Leesburg, Fla.

Memorial services for Carolyn Flora Banks Ryberg will be held at a later date.

Aris Edward ‘Ed’ Richardson

Mr. Aris Edward “Ed” Richardson, 86, of Roaring Creek Road, Newland, died Friday, May 19, 2006, at his home.

He was born Nov. 12, 1919.

A native of Hampton, Tenn., Mr. Richardson was a retired painter and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Charles “Tommy” Richardson and wife, Shirley, of Clemmons; Roger Richardson and wife, Carolyn, of Bakersville; two daughters, Glerana Ollis and husband, Joseph, of Marietta, Ga., and Dianne Burleson and husband, James, of Newland; his special friend, Ava Hughes of Newland; one sister, Dimple Edwards and husband, Fred, of DeBerry, Fla.; one brother, James Richardson and wife, Wally, of Orange County, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, “Belle” Burleson Richardson; a daughter, Margaret Sue Richardson; his father and mother, James and Julia Campbell Richardson; two sisters, Annie Hardin and Dot Jones; and two brothers, Johnny and Albert Richardson.

Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., May 20, at Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brent Price, the Rev. David Arnett, and Grace Calhoun officiating. Burial followed in the Hughes Cemetery with military honors.

Meta Willms Wagner

Mrs. Meta Willms Wagner, 87, of 119 Sierra Vista Drive, Boone, died Wednesday evening, May 17, 2006, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.

She was born September 5, 1918 in Danzig, Germany, a daughter of the late  Richard and Margaret Henning.

Mrs. Wagner is survived by two daughters, Doris Martin and husband, Stuart, of Southern Pines, and Sabrina Proctor of Boone; one granddaughter, Inge Lee Simmons, and one grandson, Jonathan Proctor and wife, Alyse, all of Boone; and one great-granddaughter, Alexandria Browing Proctor of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hermann Wagner; one granddaughter, Cathy Marie Daulton; three brothers and three sisters. 

Memorial services were conducted Saturday morning, May 20, 2006, at  11:00 o'clock, at Grace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Tim Smith and Vicar Matt Simpkins officiating. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

A reception followed at the home of a daughter, Sabrina Proctor, 200 Sierra Vista Drive, Boone.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 115 East King Street, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Robert Arthur Williams

Mr. Robert Arthur Williams, 65, of Mill Ridge, died Tuesday afternoon, May 16, 2006,

He was born in Volusia County, Fla., a son of the late Will S. and Frances Aline Johnson Williams.

Mr. Williams was a cabinet maker and a carpenter. He was a member of the Mill Ridge Property Owners Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Melynda Williams of Brandon, Fla.; one son, Wade Williams of Tampa, Fla.; and one brother, Donald Williams of Georgia.

Services will be private.

Austin & Barnes Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Williams family.

Annie Laurie Pate Sale Wilson

Mrs. Annie Laurie Pate Sale Wilson, 74, of Hamptonville, N.C., died Thursday, May 18, 2006, at Forsyth Medical Center.

She was born in Yadkin County, Jan. 20, 1932, to the late Ruth Johnson Pate.

Survivors include her husband, S. Victor Wilson, Jr.; two sons, Arvil Sale of Boone and James Sale and wife, Debbie, of Mocksville, N.C.; one daughter, Vickie Orange and husband, Charles, of Hamptonville, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Max Sale; and a brother, Bobby Pate.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon, May 21, at  2:30 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tim Lane officiating. Burial followed in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Ramsey Younce

Mrs. Margaret Ramsey Younce, age 67, of 225 State Farm Road, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Wake Forest University Medical Center.  A native of Banner Elk, Mrs. Younce was a daughter of the late Edgar Elihue and Polly Ellen Smith Ramsey.

Mrs. Younce was a member of Faith Baptist Church and a retired medical secretary with Watauga Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Edward Younce of the home; one daughter, Tonia Younce Queen and husband, Patrick, of Lexington; two granddaughters, Amanda Trivette and husband, Mark, of Banner Elk and Tabitha Younce of Lexington; one grandson, Zak Queen of Lexington; one great-grandson, Josh Trivette of Banner Elk; two sisters, Betty McKinney of Marion and Helen Nantz and husband, Roy, of Shelby; and two brothers, Floyd Ramsey and wife, Dorothy, and Bob Ramsey and wife, Helen, both of Banner Elk.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Younce and one brother,  the Rev. Lloyd Ramsey.

Funeral services  were conducted at 2p.m.  Sunday, May 21, at Faith Baptist Church by Pastor Sonny Younce and the Rev. Tim Ramsey.  

Burial  followed in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Flowers were appreciated, or memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association, 222 South Church Street, Suite 336-M, Charlotte, N.C. 28202.
