Appalachian State ends its 2006 regular season with a three-game Southern Conference series with Davidson beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Red Lackey Field. Following Thursday’s opener, the set continues with a 3 p.m. contest on Friday and concludes with Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Fancher earns shot at calling the minors
Jeff Fancher is already well known in the Watauga County sports community. Fancher, whose brother Houston is the head men’s basketball coach at Appalachian State, is a familiar sigte on the court himself, but as a referee. It’s why he’s known as “Jeff the Ref” on the radio talk show “The Sports Page,” which airs on WXIT-AM, 1200 every day from 10 a.m. until noon.

Myers Park girls’ soccer coach Bucky McCarley had seen it too many times before.
His Mustangs were in front of the Watauga goal in the first half of their second round NCHSAA playoff game at Kidd Brewer Stadium, poised to take early control of the game by scoring a goal, nearly from point-blank range.

Sky is limit to Pioneers
CHARLOTTE — Four Watauga pole vaulters are headed for the state championship meet after qualifying at the Western Regional Saturday at Myers Park High School. The three Pioneer girls in the event swept the top three positions. Sallie Gurganus took first with a meet-record 11-feet, 7-inches. Taylor Cook set a personal record with a vault of 10-6 while Julie Ward went 10-0 for third place.
