Appalachian State’s softball team heads to Chattanooga for the Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed after its most successful season in school history. The three-day double elimination tournament opens Wednesday when Appalachian takes on host and No. 4-seeded Chattanooga at 10 a.m. and ends with the championship game Saturday.

The Northwestern 4-A Conference learned what several Little League and AAU baseball teams already knew — if Devin Presnell is playing second base and Dalton Hardee is at shortstop, and if there is a runner on first base — don’t hit a ground ball up the middle of the infield.

HUDSON — Nobody knew at the time, but a handful of Northwestern 4-A Conference athletes were involved in illegal activities Thursday at South Caldwell’s track. The shenanigans centered around a regular season competition after the conference meet.

NCHSAA approves expanded playoff format
The big dance just got bigger for North Carolina high schools. Last week, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association voted to expand the playoff fields in volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball to 64 teams. Soccer will also be expanded in the classifications that warrant filling the bigger bracket.
