Shirley Ripple Early
Mrs. Shirley Ripple Early, 84, of Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Tuesday evening, April 4, 2006 at the Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.
She was born Dec. 22, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois, a daughter of Anthony and Grace Carr Ripple.
Mrs. Early was of the Episcopal faith. She was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp and retired as a teacher of kindergarten education. Mrs. Early was married to the late Arthur LaGrillon Early.
Survivors include one daughter, Christine Turner and husband, John, of Boone; and one son, Dennis Early and wife, Judi, of Plantation, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Erin and Eric Turner, both of Boone, Ryan Early of Northern Va., Matthew Early of the U. S. Marine Corp and Joshua Early of Plantation, Fla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Melanie Childers. Graveside services and burial will be conducted at the Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, Va.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, in care of Dr. Peter Haibach, Post Office Box 2780, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Doris Wallace Garland
Mrs. Doris Wallace Garland, 98, of Trade, Tenn., died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Mountain City Care Center.
She was a native of Johnson County and was born August 23, 1907 to the late William and Annie Martin Wallace.
Mrs. Garland was a loving housewife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Susie Winebarger and husband, John, of Zionville; three sons, Harold Garland and wife, Betty, of Mountain City, Norman Garland and wife, Judy, of Boone, and Donald Garland and wife, Regina, of Trade, Tenn.; one sister, Ocie Miller of Mountain City; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special niece, Nancy Gibson and husband, Ted; and her extended family at Mountain City Care Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Garland; a daughter, Margaret G. Greer; two sons, Boyd Garland and infant Robert Garland; and a sister, Virgie W. Thomas.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Zionville, with Pastor Maurice Ward, Brother Derick Wilson and Jim Hutchinson, Minister, officiating. Burial followed in the Greer-Main Cemetery in Trade, Tenn.

Jean Carolyn Kimbrell Hovis
Mrs. Jean Carolyn Kimbrell Hovis, born April 7, 1923 in Gastonia, N.C., passed away at Mayview Convalescent Center of Raleigh, N.C., on April 2, 2006 from complications due to a stroke.
She was a resident of Mayview Convalescent Center of Raleigh, N.C. for the past five years. Formerly of Gastonia, N.C. and Boone, N.C.; Mrs. Hovis was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Gastonia; as well as Powderhorn Chapel at Powderhorn Mountain in Boone. For the past five years she has attended Edenton Street United Methodist Church of Raleigh.
She graduated from Gastonia High School and attended Winthrop College. After attending Winthrop College for one year, she was employed with “Good Will Printing and Publishing,” where she met and married Frank “Skeeter” Hovis. She frequently stated that “all she ever wanted to be was a wife and mother” and she was baffled by the women of the1970’s who stated that this was not fulfilling enough. Jean won many friends through her passionate honesty and faithful community involvement. While attending Gastonia High School (the “Green Waves”) she was one of the first women admitted into the Marching Band during World War II. Jean, a trumpet player like her brothers, also was in the Symphonic Band and was a member of the all girls’ Jazz Ensemble that was good enough to cut several records.
She was an active member of the Victory School PTA, Hunter Huss High School PTA, Band Parent, and Husky Athletic Club. She was a member of Gaston County and Watauga County Home Extension Clubs. The legacy she has left behind will be remembered through her many crafts, as well as the people she touched.
Surviving are her son, Mr. David Thomas Hovis; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Hughes Hovis; a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Lyn Hovis Triplett; son-in-law, Phil Triplett; six grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Justin Christopher Hovis, Caroline Cavney Hovis, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Henry “Trip” Triplett, Jesse Curtis Triplett; and one great-grandchild, Peyton Carter Hovis; siblings, Haidee Ruth Kimbrell Richardson, (daughter, Kathy Richardson Martin and family); Curtis Cavney Kimbrell, Jr., (wife, Louise; children, Kim, Billy and Carolyn); W. Duke Kimbrell (wife, Dorothy; children, Pam, and Shepherd); as well as numerous great-nephews and nieces.
She is pre-deceased by her parents, Curtis Cavney Kimbrell and Carolyn Carter Kimbrell; as well as her husband, Frank Wellington “Skeeter” Hovis.
A sincere thanks to the entire staff of Mayview for their professional care and constant desire to make her life as productive and fulfilling as possible.
A memorial service was held Wednesday afternoon, April 5, at 1:30 p.m., in the sanctuary at Edenton Street United Methodist Church.
The family will be at home of Jean’s daughter, Lyn Hovis Triplett, 2204 Brisbayne Circle, Raleigh, N.C.

Connie Bowlick Greene
Mrs. Connie Bowlick Greene, 55, of Brooks Shell Rd., Elk Park, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2006 in the Johnson City Medical Center.
She was born March 17, 1951, a daughter of the late Isaac Conly and Alma Eller Bowlick.
Mrs. Greene received her Bachelors Degree from Florida State and her Masters Degree from the University of Georgia. A member of the Minneapolis Christian Church, she was active with the Ladies Bible Study, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Campus Christian Fellowship at Appalachian State University, and a member of the Ombudsmen. She retired from the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, and had most recently been enjoying substitute teaching in the Avery County School System.
Survivors include her husband, Jim Greene; a son, Phillip Greene of Boone; a daughter, Natalie Greene of Blowing Rock; an aunt, Annie Ruth Ellis, and her husband, J.D., of Elk Park; special cousins, Pat Edwards of Elk Park, Pam Jameson of Roan Mountain, Tenn., David Ellis of Elk Park, and Jane Bumgarner of Heaton.
Services were conducted at Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., April 2, from the Heaton Christian Church with the Rev. Durl Jones, Jr., the Rev. Brent Niddifer, and the Rev. Ken Harper officiating. Interment followed in the Bowlick-Odom Cemetery.

Max R. Moody
Mr. Max R. Moody, 87, of 147 Garden Street, Blowing Rock, died Friday morning, March 31, 2006, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
He was born March 25, 1919 in Watauga County, a son of the late Benjamin and Maude White Moody.
Mr. Moody was owner and operator of Moody’s Furniture in Blowing Rock for 60 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He was also a Journeyman Electrician who assisted in wiring the nuclear plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and a member of the Blowing Rock Fire Department for 32 years. Mr. Moody was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jewell Coffey Moody; one son, Larry Max Moody and good friend, Judy Hodges, both of Blowing Rock; four sisters-in-law, Irene Woods of Lenoir, Helen Carroll of Boone, Marie Broyhill and husband, Ralph, and Betty Coffey, all of Blowing Rock; three brothers-in-law, Homer Coffey and wife, Ersel, and Wade Coffey, all of Boone, and Wayne Coffey of Blowing Rock. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kristi Hope Moody; one sister, Edna Moody Collins; one sister-in-law, Thelma Deal; and one brother-in-law, Owen Coffey.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon, April 2, 2006, at Grace Lutheran Church. Officiating were Pastor Tim Smith and Vicar Matt Simpkins. Military graveside rites and burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.
