Clyde D. Cole

Mr. Clyde D. Cole, 71, of 303 Henry Winebarger Road, Boone, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 18, 1934 in Watauga County to the late Wiley James and Lena Houck Cole.

Mr. Cole was a retired heavy equipment operator for the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a member of Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church, and a veteran of the United States Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Miller Cole; a daughter, Penny Cornell and husband, Dale, of Boone; a son, Douglas Cole and wife, Charlie, of Sugar Grove; three granddaughters, Kendra Cornell of Boone, Kelsey and Kayla Cole, both of Sugar Grove; a sister, Barbara Adams of Vilas; three brothers, Clarence Cole and wife, Catherine, of Boone, Everette Cole and wife, Jean, of Vilas, and Bill Cole and wife, Joann, of Lewisville. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dave Adams.

Services were conducted Wednesday evening, April 19, at 8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Melanie D. Childers, and the Rev. Delmar James. The family received friends prior to the service from 6:30-8 p.m. A private entombment service was held Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Mount Lawn Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to Seby Jones Cancer Center at Watauga Medical Center, P.O. Box 2600, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Ada ‘June’ Skeens Isaacs

Mrs. Ada “June” Skeens Isaacs, 83, of U.S. Hwy. 421 N. Vilas, died Wednesday morning, April 19, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center. 

She was born July 28, 1922 in Russell County Va., a daughter of the late Samuel Jefferson and Mary Magdalene Fogleman Skeens. 

Mrs. Isaacs was a homemaker and a member of Willowdale Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Shull and husband, Terry, and Merle Forrester and husband, David, all of Mountain City, Tenn.; one son, Joe Isaacs of Vilas; four grandchildren, Chris Forrester and wife, Amy, of Knoxville, Tenn., Jonathan Shull and wife, Devon, of Mountain City, and Amanda and Lucas Isaacs of Vilas; two great granddaughters, Gracie and Emma Forrester of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters; Gaynelle Wimmer of Radford, Va. and Margaret Overby of Salem, Va.; two brothers, Dale Skeens of Dublin Va., and Harry Skeens of Chester, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Isaacs; three sisters, Jean Owens, Florence Chester, and Bessie Skeens; and one brother, Stanley Skeens. 

Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Willowdale Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Chuck Edmondson. Graveside services and burial will follow at the Willow Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. 

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 at Willowdale Baptist Church.  At other times friends may call at the home of Merle Forrester in Mountain City or at the home of Joe Isaacs in Vilas.

Truett Dexter Isaacs

Mr. Truett Dexter Isaacs, 65, of Pleasant Hill Road, Lenoir, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Ford Isaacs; two daughters, Cynthia Lynn Blancet and husband, Dennis, and Charlene Isaacs Peele and husband, Ricky, all of Lenoir; one brother, Earl Isaacs and wife, Naomi, of Vilas; one sister, Ann Isaacs Brown of Boone; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gurney Robbins and the Rev. Edgar Ford officiating. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, N.C. 28645.

Margaret Dixon Watson

Mrs. Margaret Dixon Watson, 92, of Morganton, a former resident of Boone, died Wednesday morning, April 19, 2006, at Grace Ridge in Morganton.

She was born April 24, 1913, in Cleveland County, a daughter of the late Osborne Clemmie and Mattie Gold Dixon.

Mrs. Watson attended Appalachian State University and taught elementary school at Mount Pleasant in Wilkes County. She was a member of North Morganton United Methodist Church, a former member of Boone United Methodist Church for 50 years, and a life member of the United Methodist Church Women.

Survivors include a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel Watson; one sister, Pearl Murray; and six brothers, Clarence, O.C., Hal, W.F., Tom and Ben Dixon.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Mount Lawn Mausoleum Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Mike Howard. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Market Blvd., Boone, N.C. 28607.

Hazel Proffit Winebarger

Mrs. Hazel Proffit Winebarger, 95, of the Meat Camp community, Boone, died Saturday evening, April 15, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born June 29, 1910 in Watauga County, a daughter of Willie and Bessie Winebarger Proffit.

Mrs. Winebarger was a member of Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church. She and her husband owned and operated a general merchandise store in the Meat Camp community for many years.

Survivors include four daughters, Gerry Keller and husband, George (G.J.), Joann Payne and husband, Dan, and Jean Miller, all of Boone, and Sharon Everhardt and husband, Rick, of Lenoir; her daughter-in-law, Candi Winebarger of Boone;  19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Speedie Stanley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Bessie Winebarger Proffit; her husband, John Dayton Winebarger; a son, Kenneth Winebarger; a daughter, Betty Winebarger Farthing; a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Shaw; and two sons-in-law, Arvil Miller and Van Farthing.

Services were conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Delmar James and the Rev. Mike Howard. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

The family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Charles Clifford Coffey

Charles Clifford Coffey, 33, of Bryan Hollow Road, Boone, the Meat Camp community, died Saturday evening, April 15, 2006 at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 3, l972 in Watauga County,  a son of  Arlie Clifford and Carolyn Adams Coffey of Boone. 

Mr. Coffey was of the Baptist faith and attended Faith Baptist Church.  He was employed as a painter for Charleston Forge Manufacturing in Boone.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mary Belle Harris and her daughter, Jessica Ann Harris, both of Deep Gap; his paternal grandmother, Ollie Belle Coffey of Boone; and special friend, Michael David Carroll of Boone.  He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Clifton Coffey and Bobby Dean Coffey; his paternal grandfather, Arlie Clinton Coffey; and his maternal grandparents, Shirley Finn Adams and Mary Ellen Adams.

Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Sonny Younce. Burial will follow in the White Springs Cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated or the family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Austin & Barnes.

Thomas William ‘Tom’ Greene  Sr.

Mr. Thomas William “Tom” Greene, Sr., 79, of Green Street, Blowing Rock, died Sunday morning, April 16, 2006 at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. 

He was born in Watauga County, April 4, 1927, a son of the late John and Nora Price Greene. 

Mr. Greene was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock and was a Navy Veteran. He was a former Blowing Rock Town Council Member, and a retired member of the Blowing Rock Fire Department. He worked for the Town of Blowing Rock, both as a police officer, assistant superintendent with the maintenance, and as a clerk at the Blowing Rock ABC store. 

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth “Lib” Pitts Greene; two sons, Tommy Greene of Vilas and Jeff Greene of Boone; two grandsons, Chris Greene and wife, Tori, and Brad Greene, all of Boone; one great-granddaughter, Abby Greene of Boone; one sister, Dolly Anne Forbes of Lumberton; one brother, Dee Greene and wife, Mary, of Blowing Rock; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Cora Shew, Pauline Morrison, Della Absher, Ethel Greene, Nell Grindstaff; and three brothers, Charles, Harlan and Dennis Greene. 

Servuces were conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at the Boone Advent Christian Church, officiated by the Rev. Gordon Noble and the Rev. Rudy Hayes.  Burial with military honors followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Maude Moore Bunton

Mrs. Maude Moore Bunton, 88, of Beech Mountain Road, Elk Park, died Thursday afternoon, April 13, 2006 at the Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 27, 1917 in Watauga County, a daughter of Fred Robert and Floy Elizabeth Story Moore. 

Mrs. Bunton was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Bunton of Elk Park; one sister, Annie Reece of Elk Park; a special niece, Judy Arwood and husband, Steve, of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; three special nephews, Robert Reece and wife, Barbara, and Jerry Reece, both of Elk Park; and Richard Reece and wife, Amber, of Fletcher; a special great niece, Kelli Reece of Newland; and two special great-nephews, Colby Gwyn and James Arwood, both of Roan Mountain, Tenn. Also surviving is a host of friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vonie Luther Bunton; and one brother, Marvin Dee Moore. 

Funeral services were conducted Saturday evening at 8 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Jacob Willis and the Rev. Quincy Norris. Burial was  at the Old Cable Cemetery in the Bethel community.

The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, 222 South Church Street, Suite 336 M, Charlotte, N.C.  28202.

Mary Olivia Chesson Harris

Mrs. Mary Olivia Chesson Harris, 61, of Greenville, N.C., died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Duke University Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late Brantley Crammer and Stella Marie Spruill Chesson, and was born in Martin County but lived most of her life in Pitt County.

Mrs. Harris graduated from Bethel High School, where she played on the girl’s basketball team, and she attended East Carolina University.  In April 1964, she married Cornelius Jackson “C.J.” Harris, who survives.        

She and her family lived in Durham, Heidelberg, Germany, Charlotte, Stoneville, Graham and Farmville prior to moving to Greenville in 1985. She was primarily a homemaker, but she also worked as an assistant at the Brody School of Medicine and later at the Department of Political Science at East Carolina University.  Mrs. Harris was active in church work most of her life, including 35 years as a member of the auxiliary of The Gideons International. Presently, she was a member of The Memorial Baptist Church and Bogue Banks Baptist Church in Atlantic Beach. “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” (Proverbs 31:28)

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Cornelius Jackson “C.J.” Harris; daughters, Mary Jo Harris Smith and husband, David Curtis Smith, of Durham and Sarah Olivia Harris of Clayton; son, Charles Joseph Harris and wife, Mary Ellen Greer Harris, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Mary Kathryn Chesson Smith and Drew Cornelius Smith of Durham, and Charles Jackson Harris and Margaret Olivia Harris of Charlotte; and brothers, Brantley Douglas Chesson of Durham and Jerry Stuart Chesson and wife, Brinson Edmondson Chesson, of Durham.

Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at The Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rick Bailey officiating.  Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 20062, Greenville, N.C. 27858.

Elizabeth Herpel Kadyk

Mrs. Elizabeth Herpel Kadyk, 102, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at the John Knox Village Care Center.

She was born in Reynoldsville, Pa. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio in 1925. She married Rev. J. Merion Kadyk in 1929. Together they served churches throughout the United States, spending 15 years in Garden City, Kansas prior to moving to John Knox Village in 1978.

Survivors include her five sons, Bill Kadyk and wife, Ginny, of Shawnee, Kansas; Marc Kadyk and wife, Sandy, of Boone, N.C.; Pete Kadyk and wife, Anne, of New Braunfels, Texas; Fred Kadyk and wife, Janet, of Rockford, Illinois; and Kert Kadyk and wife, Jean, of Paola, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Her husband preceded her in death on November 2, 1971.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, May 20, at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 6301 Roe Ave., Prairie Village, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Children’s Foundation of Mid-America, 1353 North Warson, St. Louis, MO 63132.

Mildred Julie Trivette Roop

Mrs. Mildred Julie Trivette Roop, 64, of Deep Gap, N.C., died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at her residence.

She was born in Lenoir, N.C. on Feb. 27, 1942 to the late Howard and Alma Eisenhower Trivette. 

Survivors include a son, John Lee Roop of Fleetwood, N.C.; brothers,  Eugene and David Trivette, both of Boone, N.C.; sisters, Elaine Lewis of Lenoir, N.C., and Margaret Baker of Granite Falls, N.C., Hazel Blevins of Westchester, Pa., and Shirley Coffey of Nashville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gaither Roop.

Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, April 15, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Lloyd Day officiating.  Burial followed in the Pennington Cemetery.

Dr. Dosi Elaine Cook Stanberry

Dr. Dosi Elaine Cook Stanberry, 94, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Liberty Commons Skilled Nursing, Burlington, N.C.

She was born at Whaley, Beech Mountain, N.C., the daughter of Millard Spurgeon and Ida McGuire Cook.

For many years, she and her husband, Earl Spencer Stanberry, who died in 1978, worked at Bemberg Rayon Corporation, in Elizabethton, Tenn. She later worked as a feature writer for the Elizabethton Star before deciding to continue her education.

Dr. Stanberry obtained her bachelor and masters degrees at East Tennessee State University, then later earned her PhD at East Texas State University. She retired from Dickinson State University, Dickinson, N.C., where she won many honors as a professor of English and as an author.

After retiring to Chapel Hill, N.C., Dr. Stanberry published several books and plays. Her final book, “Mountain Echoes,” has just been published.

Survivors include her daughter, Anita and her husband, Robert St. Lawrence of Graham, N.C.; grandchildren, Karen Swatzell Pfaender and husband, William C. Pfaender, of Franklin, Tenn.; William Joseph Swatzell Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, of Guam; great-grandchildren, Johnathon Pfaender and wife, Trish, of Spring Hill, Tenn.; Caroline Pfaender Riddle and husband, John Riddle, of Louisville, Tenn.; William Joseph Swatzell III and Sarah Swatzell of Guam.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m., Monday, April 17, 2006, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tenn. with Dr. Joe Sorah, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jim Buchanan, David Carr, Doyle Cook, Winston Church, Brookie Potter and David Thurmond.
