Bulldogs rally past App State
In a game that lasted 13 innings and five weeks, Appalachian State’s baseball team defeated Gardner-Webb 7-4 Tuesday at Red Lackey field. The contest began on Feb. 21 in Boiling Springs and was called because of darkness in the 13th inning with the score tied 4-4.

ICARD — They finally stand a snowball’s chance. Watauga’s softball team had been waiting for a Northwestern 4-A Conference win in the hopes that it would snowball into a successful season. They got that first conference win against East Burke when they held on to a 5-2 decision Tuesday night.

ASHEVILLE — Between strikeouts, Watauga and A.C. Reynolds managed to each scrounge together a pair of runs through seven innings of Monday’s softball game. It took a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth to push the Rockets over Watauga, 3-2.

Swim team sets 25 new team records
HUNTERSVILLE — Breaking 25 team records and placing seven swimmers in 12 events, the Watauga Swim Team capped of the short-course season with a fifth-place finish by the boys and a sixth-place finish by their girls’ team in Huntersville March 19. “We had over 50 total swims in finals for Saturday and Sunday, and more than 30 of these swims were in the championship heat,” Watauga coach Stephen Andreades said. “This is a huge improvement to only one swimmer in one event in the top eight of a final session last year.”

Earp caps season with victory
PITTSBURGH – Three state champions wasn’t enough. Watauga’s wrestling team wanted more and they went to Pittsburgh to get it last week. After Friday’s finals at the High School Sophomore Nationals, Watauga can now boast a national champion. Jacob Earp won his four matches, finishing off with a 16-5 win over an opponent from Kentucky, to become a national champ and cap a 53-0 season.
