Pioneers move game to McDowell

Watauga’s baseball team has played pretty well at home this year.

The Pioneers lone Northwestern 4-A Conference victory was at home last Friday against Freedom. Their lone NWC loss was at South Caldwell, but then again, lots of teams are expected to lose down there.

Watauga blanks Patriots
When Watauga needed some offense, it turned to Jennifer Callahan and Cassie Rex. Callahan scored two goals in the second half, both off corner kicks by Rex, to lead Watauga to a 3-0 victory over rival Freedom at Jack Groce Stadium Friday night.

Watauga pitcher Lee Ammann resembled a football defense that gives up some yardage, but few points. Ammann scattered 11 hits and Freedom had eight runners in scoring position. Yet Ammann was able to keep the Patriots’ run production down and helped the Pioneers take a 6-3 victory on a cold Friday night at Watauga’s field.

College of Charleston showed it is not quite ready to allow an upstart team take over the Southern Conference. The Cougars got solid pitching throughout the weekend and swept Appalachian State in a three-game series at Red Lackey Field over the weekend.

Golf team gets look at rest of competition
ANDERSON CREEK — Getting an early-season look at some of the top golf teams in the state, Watauga’s boys’ golf team travelled to the High School Elite tournament at Anderson Creek Friday and finished 12th. Jacob Eggers finished in a tie for 12th individually in a field of over 90 players.

Watauga softball coach Brian Vannoy fully believes his players can hit against the top pitching in the Northwestern 4-A Conference. Yet Freedom proved that the Pioneers’ offense can be silenced on any given day. That was the case Friday afternoon when Freedom’s Ashley Hasson tossed a no-hitter at the Pioneers in a 2-0 Patriots victory at the Carroll Complex.
